Depends what sort of thing you're into? Im a student here so let me know what kinda night you're after and i'll advise as best i can - its a very student orientated town tho so it won't be a huge night out i wouldnt have thought

There is a great Chinese restuarant in Oxford, can't remember the name, all I can remember is it one the main road out of Oxford toward the showground, on the left hand side opposite Tesco small store.

.....but what do I know ?

You could probably break Oxford down into 3 distinct parts.

Town centre - Townies and tourists (not meant derogotary - I am a towny)

Jericho area (walking distance from town) - a bit more upmarket, cocktail bars and restaurants

Cowley Rd (taxi/bus from town - ask the taxi driver) - students mainly with some good pubs and indian/chinese restaurants, (and polish/lebanese/japanese/moroccan too!)

Dunno about the good chinese opposite tesco but that main road out of town is Cowley Rd.

Try "Escape" (just off the high st in the covered market - tends to be less cheesy than most. Bridge is usually pretty RnB Hip hop stylee and usually a good night so if you're into that you could have a good night.

I would have to disagree with Dave and say that there are very very few students who go out on a saturday night on the cowley road - if you're gonna brave it then wear a bullet proof vest. (apart from the big roundabout where "clemantines" hosts a student night on a saturday).

Never heard of the Coven?!?! where is this? sounds interesting!!

No idea of the chinese either - i live on Cowley rd like alot of students and there is a large tescos - but no chinese as far as im aware - altho the "opium Den" on the other side of town (near the station) does a fab chinese (at a hefty price)

Steve

Hi Brian.

One time in Oxford I asked someone were the best nearest Club was and they replied Manchester.

Anyway from my huge data base of Oxford (from my sons mates) I would reccomend (or rather they would}The Zodiac on the outskirts, they have live bands ect and club nights, It was mentioned this could be now under a different name but is well known.

One of them tells me they even have TOP Djs playing there, so behave yourself.

Jim.

Hey guys, thanx for all the answers.

Ajay, even I cannot afford/justify the DVJ-X1! http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/laugh.gif I have played with them extensively though, and they are a nice product, but I will stick with the CDJ1000s, and probably use Archaos or Vjamm live for now.

Right, well on balance I think I may just curl up in my hotel room with a nice cup of tea http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/sleep1.gif NOT!

The Zodiac is ok - bit grotty. I had a quick check on the Zodiac Website (it is also on Cowley Rd not far from Tesco)

On Saturday it sounds like there is a night right up your street if you are on a VJ course! See below...

"Peepshow Dance + Audiovisual Treats and Beats - fortnightly clubnight with Peepshow Paddy and guest DJs & VJs till 3am"

or Friday, "boogie basement" - soul funk and disco.

The Bullingdon on Cowley Rd has a similar night (on Fridays I think) called Backroom Boogie - so good that the Zodiac copied it.

I guess most students who frequent Cowley Rd at night are from Oxford Brookes Uni (my old stamping ground). Dynamite Steve, do you go to the 'proper' university or Brookes?

There are some great pubs and bars on Cowley Rd. Bar Baby, Cafe Baba, The Globe, Brickworks, Corridor, Hobgoblin, City Arms, Pub Oxford, Kasbah, Bullingdon, Temple Bar - all lively places. No Ak47 needed.

The Coven is next to the Ice Rink, not really worth a visit on any night, least of all Friday.

The only tesco i know is off the cowley road... but the chinese is a long way towards town, nearer the bus station... and it ain't that good...

The best club id Down Town Manhattens, Park End is full of students, but the DJ's aint that good. The old Jam Factory used to be pretty good... I used to play in OX1 but that has gone down hill now. 5th avenue is another good club, but its upstairs - not so good when ur drunk !

Or goto yates', then there used to be a bus to Utopia in reading the best club for miles ! used to DJ and Lj there...

Down Town Manhattens (DTM) has shut down, just before xmas.

OX1 is now called Que Pasa, it does cheap cocktails if you get there early.

5th Avenue is now called 'The Studio', i've not been for ages - I think it is RnB at weekends.

If you like Thai, Chang Mai is excellent, just off the High St, opposite Escape bar which was mentioned previously. It ain't cheap though!

Mongolian Wok Bar on George St, just down from Yates is a good laugh, you cook your own food - at least you know what you are getting!

The Chinese restaurant near Tesco on Cowley Road is the Chopsticks Restaurant. It has a very good reputation. The Zodiac is very close to it.

Close by you will find Aziz Restaurant (Indian) or La Cappanina (Italian). There is also the Jamaican Eating house.

Bar Baby does not serve draught beer.

Take care though, the area around the bingo hall on Cowley Road is where you find the friendly ladies.
