Grease Theme Night!!

Recommended Posts

Got a peach of a gig - a 40th, Grease themed night.

I love Grease so dressing up as Danny Zucho won't be a problem (except I'm three times his size...) and I could probably sing most of the words to most of the songs. But I'm after other ideas to help the night along.

We plan to have a quiz about the film and judge the fancy dress. I'd like to organise re-enactment of the video's, especially "Greased Lightning" and perhaps even a bit of Grease karaoke - although I'd have to hire karaoke gear...hmmm.

I'm not overly keen on showing the film, which would be illegal anyway.

Any other thoughts spring to mind? Thanks.

Maybe do a quiz on the year that grease was released and other music`\ news events from that year. I am sure many people remember things from the years that their fav songs\films were released.

I will try anything,once!

There are a number of web sites dedicated to 'Grease' where you could get info for a quiz.

Whenever I play songs from the film at any gig I find that most people know the words (or what they think are the words) so a group sing-a-long might work rather than karaoke.

I like the ideas of a group sing-a-long or lip sync-karaoke - both cheap! I will need to get the words printed out though. Thanks for your ideas.

An intersting idea also CS - with Grease set in the 50's but filmed in the 70's, I have two years/decades to pick from. I could also pose questions about films in general or films starring any of the cast.

Olivia Newton-John had a fairly succesful musical career as well - Let's Get Physical and Xanadu spring to mind. Perhaps a few name the song questions if I could get one of her albums in time..?

There are other artists in the film to choose from as well.

I also have original cast CD from the stage show but unless people recognise the tunes I don't really think they are that useful. Perhaps background or buffet music.

One thing I definitely require is details on how to do the "Hand Jive". Anyone?

I can hand jive....but need to go and do it to refresh my memory, then will let you know.

I also have a grease book with all the lyrics (at the back of a guitar book) so no need for you to search for them, I'll mail them over.

I can't explain this hand jive thing without sounding demented, can't you watch Grease? http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/rolleyes.gif

I think it would be far more fun to watch you trying to describe it http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif

I was wondering how you were going to show us all the motions Paula!

As it happens, this gig is not until Easter - so a demo at the DJU MAX could be in order???

Thanks for your help - suppose I'll have to watch Grease http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/rolleyes.gif

One fears for Andy's (ADS) safety. On the plus side his widow will be selling off an awful lot of cheap DJ gear http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/laugh.gif

I like the idea of a quiz. Maybe a "name the tune" style quiz where they only hear the first few seconds of the song.

Other ideas buy a couple of wigs or props and get the extroverts to really go for it with a mime or karaoke.

Depending on the type of audience you have another idea for quiz or game - find an anagram finder online and see what funny anagrams you can make up from the character names or actors names.

Just a few ideas.

Why don't we start making hellium filled bubble wrap?<P> It would help keep postage costs down.

Nice DD, anything that is "easy" to do (anagrams), cheap (or free) and will help the night along can only be a good thing.

Cheers for your input.

  • 2 months later...

Well, I did the Grease night last Saturday, and it was a belter.

Larry, the organiser and husband of the party girl, asked if I could go and visit them beforehand to discuss the night. At this meeting it was obvious he had put an awful lot of effort and work into the night. Long story short he had hired the local village hall, hired tables, black table cloths and silver chairs. He had purchased loads of flashing Christmassy lights so the room looked amazing. Along with black and silver ballons, the room was decorated with posters from the film and era.

On the night everyone was in fancy dress - GOOD fancy dress. There were surprises galore for the birthday gal too with pictures she never even knew existed and friends turning up she wasn't expecting.

As for me, I had a timetable - 8pm start, 8:15 welcome speech from Larry. 9pm 30 minutes of Grease music. 9:30 buffet, 9:40 quiz whilst eating. 10pm signalled the second 30 minutes of Grease, along with fixed competition winners - well, it was a draw so two people were selected at random (ahem) to perform a Summer Nights medley. 10:30 party-girl speech - four typed A4 pages, which included me handing out pressies to other birthday guests and playing Beverly Hill Billies on cue.

We had bubble gum blowing competitions plus the essential hula hoop dances. Never got time to get the limbo out, or the giant Twister. 10:50 was the Dance Contest....The Hand Jive! Even with instructions people were reluctant to make a fool of themselves on the dance floor, so it turned out to be a seated competition!

I'd got a page and a half of requests from the celebrant before the night, so my biggest problem was fitting it all in. Loads of cheese, loads of disco, loads of 70's and 80's. Played some dance stuff later on and Amarillo got played at least three times!

I've had a really nice email thanking me too:

Just a quick note to thank you for the great entertainment at our Grease party. You kept the room bouncing with excitement and well timed music - it made the evening a fantastic success! We really appreciate all the preparation you took , from visiting us prior to the event to understand our needs & the theme of the party, to the early setting up and readiness for the main event, we were thrilled with everything.

Once again, thank you very much, you deliver a service you should be very proud of and we thoroughly enjoyed the benefits of it!

All the very best...

Sandy & Danny (aka Kerry & Larry)

All in all, a very succesful evening - thank you all for your input and help way back in Jan when I first asked for help. Bring on the next one!!

Well some time ago on a new years eve topic i did grease as the theme.

although i had a benifit as it was at my residency so i got the bar maids to get in on the act whereby we acted out the scenes/songs of the film. although you could still benifit by getting some of the crowd to do an act with you getting them involved. even better if the it is a birthday girl get here to play Olivier.

Fantastic for Summer nights and I got you.

see if you can get a couple of the dresses for her to just throw on if she is not already (and the crowd) in costume and act out scenes with you be a right laf. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/thumbup.gif

When i did NYE it went down a complete STORM with the crowd every one wanting to get in on the act.

still learning, still experiencing, still dj,ing
