Mike stuff - Ummm, well we try and get a reaction from our crowd.

ie. Does anybody out there want some Greenday then after the shout (whatever the reply) I can't hear you then wack on the track.

Or try - Put on a good dance track and get everybody to put their hands in the air.

Then we some times anounce we have had loads of requests for say a real popular track so ask them to shout if they really want it played.

We also tease them and pretend we are not going to play it then say - Ok you win here it is. It's hard to explain but once you get some requests from them use the information to put them a show on. Another trick we use is when we have a full floor and have found something they like shout - Do you want some more and them give them some similar stuff. I know this sounds a bit http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/pooh.gif but it works at our school gigs and I hope it helps a bit - Mick

I think the older you get, the more difficult it is to identify with the younger age groups, and as Mick says, the more strange you feel entertaining in the style that is most appreciated by these age groups!.

Don't agree that you cannot play older music to a young crowd, I reguarally play cheese at 18th and 16th birthday parties, and Foundations at 6-10 year olds as it was in Shrek.

.....but what do I know ?

I think we've ascertained on many ocassions that anybody of any age can like any music from any genre. As DJ's, we generalise our set in order to appeal to the masses.

Those of us who have kids on this forum will probably expose them to the kinds of music we like to listen to. Last night I was playing "Paradise by the Dashboard Light" and my two year old went banana's when I switched it off!

Going back to the original question...nobody knows exactly what to play for young teenagers as they are all quite different. The Now albums offer a variety of genre's that should get you through most nights - back them up with specialist albums, like the dance ones you ordered and together with the rest of your collection you should be covered.

Good Luck and let us know how you get on - good or bad.

Digital Disco's list is spot on for the gig we do but dont discount playing oldies and cheese. The audience of this age group have very wide musical tastes. And dont forget as Big Ben rightly says, their parents play their own music at home so they hear loads of different stuff. We often get asked to play ABBA, Hot Chocolate, Elvis, Gloria Gaynor at our gigs. Maybe its a local thing but we have worked this school for 4 years and do 5 gigs a year for them and its always been the same Mick

11-13 Grease, Macerana YMCA usually work

13-14 Cheesy stuff like the above is a bit hit and miss. A bit of Jacko might go okay, but I don't often play older stuff

18th's I would consider playing a bit more cheese.

Over the mic, just don't be stereotypical joe blogg's DJ, try interact with them, but don't TAKE the ****. Just shout out requests etc.

Hi

Having not yet done too many large secondary school discos I would go with mainly chart stuff and a bit of 'cheese'. The 15years olds party may well have been a one off for party games but that might have been how the mood took them. A large number on Teens will possiblly think it uncool to play party games but at a birthday party it might have fitted the mood. It also depends what games were played!! I never knew psychology came into DJing. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/huh.gif Anne

If you want to go for something a little older try...

House of pain - Jump around

MC Hammer - Cant touch this

And most importantly go into it with confidence otherwise they will rip you to peices if they see you are nervous. I started out at aged 15 and I'm 21 now and sometimes still when I turn up as the DJ for a school disco they still have very little respect. But never let your nerves show and you will soon enough have their respect.

Good luck and enjoy it!

Why don't we start making hellium filled bubble wrap?<P> It would help keep postage costs down.

Hey guys

Thank you all for your very useful and valuable input to my dilema.

As i said i would i'll fill you in with the outcome lol.

Well after all that i ended up not doing the disco for the secondary school. I gave them a quote and they never got back to me even though i was "garanteed" the job. Anyway as it turned out i got a phonecall last wednesday at 5:00pm asking if i could do the local primary school the next morning so from that, it turned out to be a success and i have now got a feeling i'll be asked back again to them - if not for their PTA, for the kids!!!

Anyway i've takin on board all the suggestions and thank you all very much! http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/thanks.gif

Did a similar disco im 16 yo. I find that it's more daunting for a similar age group. If the disco is for a group off teens that are all the same sex it is much easyer. other wise the boys are trying to look cool for the girls and vis versa. dont be shocked if the hall clears as they'll return about 15 - 20 mins later P****d and wont remember you the next day!!

Dont be afraid of classics Rockin' all over the orld is gerat for all ages (stats quo) i finished with come on eillien the other day and got an ovation!

Just tie down all your C.D s though!!

Handing out glow sticks is great for gaining statue. at 6p each from chrs you cant go wrong. they'll be on their knees begging you for your them. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/attentionwhore.gif

Let us know how it goes

Rule it...Don't let it rule you
