A lot of the stuff metioned on here was introduced to me by a guy who did radio 1 on a sunday night. the man of course was robbie vincent, with his sound of sunday night show. "if it moves, funk it" the old bill mitchell voice over. Me and robbie used do that musicaljourney every week. we had a record shop in newcastle called hitsville USA, and tony the owner used to sell all the stuff mentioned, stuff you coulnd't get anywehre else. virgin would be full of assistants with long greasey hair in black tee *******, blasting out the cult etc, where as hitsville USA whould have the latest americna imports usually weeks before anyone else. i used to get paid on thursday night, straight to newcastle for late night shopping, tuck me £15 board away for me mam, and spend the rest on 12" singles. Happy Days.

here's a few more from memory

Delegation - where is the love we used to know

billy griffin - hold me tighter in the rain

the intruders - she's a winner

phil fearon - everbody's laughing

was not was - spy in the house of love

Bar-Kays - sexomatic

system - i just wanna make you feel good

whispers - rocksteady

tavares - heaven/don't take away the music (ben liebrand 12" remixes -awesome)

Haywoode - i can't let you go.

D-train youre the one for me (original not the crappy remix they done)

sheila B devotion - singing in the rain

Hi

Roof Garden! oh yes!!!!

When I started college in 1986 I was in halls of residence next to a guy that was into jazz funk and soul, used to spend endless hours in his rooms listening to all this great music by artists I'd never heard of before.

he was responsible for me developing my passion for music, I must see if I can get in touch with him and thank him.

Must start playing some of these at gigs and see if anyone else remembers.

My experience of actually playing this kind of music in the 80's was that it was very much an underground scene with only the occasional track crossing over to radio and the charts. (Even though people now talk about these classics as if everyone knew then.)

I think things were different in London, where Soul and Jazz Funk were more mainstream.

Robbie Vincent - now he's the man, from his Saturday morning show on Radio London, through to the Radio 1 show, he did more to push this music than anyone else.

Jeff Young followed him through the same route, and on my record buying trips to London I would occassionally hang out in the Radio London studio, answering phones etc, as Jeff did his show. It was a great opertunity to meet many of my music idols of the time.

your right, very few of them actually made it in to the charts, i bought them cos i liked them, still got them in my loft. I occasionally play D-train and a few more of the well known ones. it's a shame really, because most of them are cracking songs.

You must have played it before I arrived, cos I would have definitely noticed that one.

Robbie Vincent's saturday lunchtime show on Radio London in the early 80's was essential, as was Greg Edwards "Soul Spectrum" show saturday evenings on Capital Radio around the same period.

Plus all the great Pirate soul stations such as JFM, Jackie, Horizon, Invicta, LWR, Kiss, Solar etc.

Yep, I used to remember that. He used to appear at my local club "The Kilburn National" although sometimes it was Tony Blackburn.

I thought Steve Walsh was best when he used to do "The Best Disco In Town" at "The Lyceum" in The Strand with Greg Edwards on friday nights which were often live on Capital Radio. In those days it was all about the music, as his fame grew he started to talk/sing more and more over the top of the the records he was playing. It's sad when DJ's start to get so consumed by their fame that they think they're bigger than the tunes they're playing http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/nono.gif Steve Walsh though is one of many who have gone down this road. They forget that most of the punters want to listen to the actual record and NOT their attempts to sing over the record http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/pooh.gif

It seems a LOT of guys on this site like the old soul/jazz-funk/rare-groove etc and are all reminiscing about the great tracks that were around... instead of sitting there accessing your memory banks book yourself on the Caister Soul Weekender You'll love it, they have 3 rooms playing great tunes, and virtually every track thats been listed here is played at least once in one of the rooms during the weekend. Myself, Ian Stewart & paula from this forum will all be there, so lets have a few more of you joining us. The next one is MayDay bank holiday weekend.

April 29th to May 2nd, and then later in the year, the first weekend in October.

They take place at the Vauxhall holiday park in Great Yarmouth, and the atmosphere there is ALWAYS fantastic, VERY friendly and never a hint of trouble.

One of the most interesting things regarding this list is that how many of us have listed tunes that were nothing to do with Jazz Funk, but more the soul, funk, disco dance scene of the early to late 80's.

just an observation.

If you want to hear some quality Jazz Funk, listen to the mastercuts Jazz Funk Series volumes 1-7.

OK, I'll take the baton, so we're talkin 70's/80's Jazz-Funk/Soul/Rare-Groove etc:

Donald Byrd - Dominoes...

Exactly; that's why I started my list as above. What started off referring to Jazz-Funk suddenly included pop, disco, electro, rap and so on.

I'm another one that would testify that the Mastercuts series is absolutely phenomenal. Apart from the Mastercuts Jazz-Funk volume 1 to 7 they also do other series such as Mastercuts Rare-Groove, Mastercuts Mellow Soul, and Funk, P-Funk, Soul, Disco, Salsoul, Electro, Rap, New Jack Swing, R&B, House, Reggae and many more.

Mastercuts was formerly part of the Beechwood record label, but it seems they've been taken over by Dynamic Music & Media. Check out the website

Very observant Ian... Some fantastic memories in this thread though.

I thought of a few more in similar genres:

Tygers of pan tang - Love potion No9

Saxon - 747

Led Zeppelin - Kashmir

Master Cuts also do an 80s groove CD, picked it up a while back for Rose Royce 'Magic Touch'. A with Matercuts you get 12'' versions.

There's also loads of comps like Pure Groove and Eighty's Soul weekender. There's another graet one I use too, name escapes me...

Windjammer 'Tossing and Turning's a great track too. Was Fools Paridise listed?

I'd love to get down to Caister. Southport also has a room dedicated to 80s soul and jazz funk, graet way to spend an afternoon!

So much stuff I buy for my own pleasure, is bits I've ownedn vinyl in the past http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/sad.gif
