Hi Guys, the time has come for new speakers http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/rolleyes.gif

I have an Audiohead Ah1000 which gives 500W per channel into 4 Ohms, but not too sure of the maths into 8 Ohms. So please guys, I need two things

1 Help and Advice

2 Prices.

I am off work on Tuesday, so I can call into your shop and have a look to see, Ideally, I would like to be able to mount the speakers on stands so it goes over everybodys head, I have a budget to work to, as I am just starting out, so nothing too expensive.

Thakns in advance for your help.

Cheers

The amp gives 350w into 8R loads. I've got the same amp but rebadged by a German distributor.

As for speakers, there's so much choice out there in that range and they should all be able to handle the output. Don't forget if a speaker is rated at 250wrms to 300wrms is should be able to take peaks of 450-600w so don't worry if the speaker you end up with 'appears' to have a lower rating than the amp. At this level 50w is negligible anyway.

try and narrow it down too 3 or 4 speaker types and then come back to the forum, as every one here has there own faves and can then tell you the pros and cons....

personaly my vote goes to EV and JBL

EV or HZ

Because I can't spell Martin Audio http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/tongue.gif

Alot depends on your budget, you can spend anything from £60 per pair to £000's per pair.

.....but what do I know ?

Hi

the only thing with HK is the price tag...yes their damn good, but they come at a price.

I started out with a pair of Electra Vision tops 250w each. they were a bit bulky, but they were excellent sounding cabs, loaded with eminence drivers.

Later added Electra Vision base bins, 300w each.

Now I'm using a pair of Mackie SRM450's with a pair of Skytec active subs, lovely sound.

Better to spend a little more on the sound and get it spot on and spend a little less on lighting.

PEAVEY ! I'm a great Peavey fan. The equipment is worth the money and will last for years and years. I have a Peavey amp and speakers.

If not OHM are a very good brand and their equipment is built to last.

I'm not a great fan of active speakers because of the extra leads involved. If you're running 2 tops and 2 subs then thats twice as many sets of leads to run to provide power and signal to each cab. More cabs...2 more leads each...

Point taken, however, I personally would rather carry a couple more leads than a flightcase full of amps, equilizers and crossovers!

I think all the above comments just go to show that sound is a very personal thing. Over the past 25 years I have had practically everyones speakers at some point. I like what I buy, then six months later find something else I prefer. A fool and his money springs to mind.

I must say that I am particulary pleased with the HK rigs I have. I use them for all sorts of gigs, the actor rig is primarily used for large band PA, whilst the two elias rigs cater for the discos. I have some of the Alto 1x 12s which along side a pair of powered Yamaha 1x12s are used for monitoring and conference / pa jobs too. Everything I have is active and it would take a lot to turn me back.

I used to use Peavey too and had very little faults with them, as long as the spec was at least the Hi-sys range. Anything else sounded wrong on the top end.

As for sound lab speakers, sorry, just not for me! Ditto JBL.

The mackie stuff is good, needs a little tinkering with the top end to make it smoother, but other than that, nice! Never tried the skytec stuff, so cant comment there. Just know of their reputation as being a bit on the "cheap as chips" side.

It wouldn't do for us all to like the same!

• 15'' (381mm) speaker

• 1'' (25mm) Compression driver

• Dispersion: 90? x 40?

• Frequency response: 50 Hz - 22 kHz

• Efficiency: 98dB

• Two 1/4'' (6.35mm) jack and two Neutrik Speakon sockets

• Full range with high frequency limiter

• Resilient carpet covered

• Silver steel grille

I have been quoted at £238 for the pair, but will these be OK with the Audiohead AH1000. I have been told that these speakers will only run at 250w??

sounds like the amp is perfect for the job.. 520watts RMS into 4 ohms stereo...

it means you can run the speakers loud with out the amp running out of steam...

you will however need to find stands to put the speakers on for best results...

also think about your upgrade path from this setup...

a second AH1000 with an active cross over and the Peavy SUB bins to match the tops will make your sound system sound 101 % better at larger functions...

Sorry for being ignorant, but where does the 520w RMS come from, this speaker stuff is all new to me, plus, my amp will deleiver 500w per channel into 4 ohm, so is it ok to put 500w into a speaker rated at 250W.

PS Thanks for your help.

Check to see if they have the proper Black Widow driver in. If they are the new ones I am thinking of, be careful. I have known of a couple of people who have destroyed the new Peavey range quite easily.

where does the 520w RMS come from,

it comes from the specs of the amp i was reading....

yes the speaker is 250Watts , but it can handel a peek of 500watts

i would not recomend you run things falt out and find out how loud that peek is but your amp can deliver a clean signal all the way upto the 250watt mark and then also deliver a clean signal upto the peek of the speaker so it wont clip... clipping kills speakers....

the subs you should run from another amp......
