small problem with already installed........

microsoft are changing the game a little and any new updates will soon only be available to legal versions of windows... this means you need to have the licence key sticker on your pc ...... and allow the new active x plug in to check your system is ligit....

it also ties in with new tighter digital rights management in media player 10....

  • 1 month later...

Many breweries and nightclub chains specify particular software for playing media (music & video) on PCs out to crowds in their venues. My experience is with an installed Kaleidovision KL2 which runs on Windows 2000 Pro. It's around 17 grand a system and it still embarrassingly crashes every once in a while (usually to a packed venue) though it's impossible to say if that's the media, the OS, hardware or the application.

What about people who have purchased machines with the OEM versions of XP? Any problems there?

(won't affect me but thought i'd ask)

How can Micro$oft find out if your system is running a illegitimate copy of windows?

when you install windows on your system. you enter a 25 letter and number key...

you then activate windows online within 30 days, or in the case of a courprate licence microsoft already know about the key...

when your pc goes online for the updates the little bit of active x software checks the online data base for youe key and details....

If the key has been riped off or it dont match your machine then no download....

in the case of a business if you are running a riped off copy then expect a visit from the men in suites with a summons.....

http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/1106.gif Don’t get me started on that money grabbing Bill Gates, it shouldn’t be called Microsoft it should have been called Megabuck’s http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/huh.gif

Most people are of the opinion that Bill is getting too greedy, If you want Windows XP Home full install it will cost you £179.99 or £89.99 for the upgrade from PC world & it can only be used on one machine. XP pro is even more expensive at £259.99 for the full install & £169.99 for the upgrade, and I’m lead to believe this is again only for one machine. AND if my machine blows up I’ve got to go and get another copy (what a rip off) http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/363.gif

If all my machines hadn’t come with XP already installed it would have cost me

£1259.93 for XP home or £1819.93 for XP Pro just to get the computer’s working. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/scared.gif

It’s no wonder that more of the experienced computer bods at work are switching to Linux. I don’t know anything http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/533.gif about Linux but I’m lead to believe it can be used on any number of machines, & it looks very much like windows to use & for about £70 you don’t only get an operating system that you can use on any number of machines, you also get an office type package.

NOW that’s more like it! http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/thumbup.gif

I don’t think all the software manufacturers support Linux at the moment, but if it becomes more popular Bill may find his golden goose dropping something else http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/pooh.gif on him & not just laying eggs.

I would be interested to now from all you computer EXPERTS out there what you think about Linux, at its price I’m almost tempted to get another hard drive just to try it (I have a removable hard drive bay on my machine so to swap from one to the other would be very easy)

Almost forgot here's a link for those who want to find out a little more about Microsoft

Windows XP Pro (oem) £125 + p&p full version not an upgrade

SUSE linux 9.2 Pro (retail) £57 + p&p loads of extras inc 64bit and open office

and before somone comes back and says they can find it cheeper, remember with OEM software its the retailer who has to support it... and I dont compeate as I dont have too.....

It’s the same the whole world over Mark, everyone wants something for nothing it’s just a shame the country can’t be run that way.

So what’s your opinion of SUSE Linux 9.2 Pro, is it any good for every day use?

Is it as easy to use & just as difficult to find your way around as Windows?

Does it work with most or all software?

I know it’s a lot of questions but I’d like to know, it’s just the people at work who have switched to Linux swear by it, where they used to swear at Windows.

Oh, and if you're in the habit of running cracked OS's then i shouldn't worry too much. there's workarounds for everything. XP was supposed to be copy proof when it got released. The fact it had been cracked before it was even out says something about the state of things currently and i can't see that changing in a hurry. I wouldn't bank on Microsoft being able to write an uncrackable piece of software going on the security of their other projects.....

Last time Microsoft blocked people downloading updates because of hacked versions, crackers produced a way of changing the license key on the machine and provided a list of known good keys. It may not be worth Microsoft the money to chase a target they might never catch.

And as for pricing, ebuyer were selling XP Pro oem for under £100 so no problems there really.

this is why microsoft have introduced the active x key checkup to there update service....

it wont stop you running the cracked os but it does stop you from doing updates, so leaves you open to problems......

sadly ebuy are in trouble for this.... OEM software is only supported by the people who sell it not microsoft , have you tryed to call ebuyer technical support with a windows problem ?????

GREAT , but i was brought up using solaris and HP/UX so i find it easy to use....

the insterlation has been simplifyed so anyone can get it onto there system and its just as simple as installing windows XP.....

once you have had it on your system for a few weeks and get used to where things are and how they work you will never want to go back....

I feel part of the problem is because Micro$oft products are so expensive more people will use cracked versions, so Micro$oft will spend more money to try & stop them & who is going to pay for it? The people buying their products & as the price goes up more people will use dodgy copies, and it just goes on & on.

When I first started with computers it was DOS2, then DOS3, 4, then Windows 2, 3, 3.1, 3.22 then Windows 95, 95SE, 98, 98SE, then ME. I had genuine copies of all these operating systems, some as full install & some as upgrades. I drew the line at 2000 there was no way I was going to spend even more money, but at least these reasonably priced & could be used on every machine in your house.

Uncle Billy has realised that more & more households are having more than one machine, so he has jumped on the band-wagon by allowing Windows XP to be used on one machine only.

I haven’t rushed into getting XP for this reason & still wouldn’t have it, if it didn’t come with the new computers. I know a lot of people who flatly refuse to go to XP for this very reason, and they have all said “if it was a reasonable price & could be used on all their machines they would get it” (these are the same people who are now looking at Linux)

I’m sure if the price was better & it could be used on more than one machine, more people would get the genuine article, & they wouldn’t have to spend a fortune trying to stop the crackers.

thats just the thing, it is reasonable priced. the problem is that people cant get there heads round the fact that just becuase it come on a CD does not mean it should cost £9.99 in tescos.

your not paying the £169.99 reatil price for the CD or the nice box it comes in , you are paying for the hours of development and all the support that you get , your paying for the nice man in texas who answers the phone at any time of the day or night at a local rate who will tell you first time what the problem is with your software and help you fix it.

your paying for the people to fix the viruses and the loop holes in your O/S and keep the nasty people out of your computer..

your paying a fair price for a great product and the cost of windows has been kept well within inflation......

Get over it , if you cant aford it then you are kidding your self...

the average life of a desk top pc is 3 to 4 years..

if you buy XP with your system thats £79 of the cost

thats 1460 days of tech support and free updates for £79 or 0.5p per day.......

find me another company who can offer you that level of service for that price ?

oh and dont forget the 1 year of free anti virus software that now comes with XP and the free anti spyware software that is also going to be part of the package....

All XP versions are essentially the same on the disk, it's just a coded reference on the CD which determines whether it is read as XP home, pro or corporate. using an editor you can copy the cd, modify the code and burn it back as another version.
