My experience is with an installed Kaleidovision KL2 which runs on Windows 2000 Pro. It's around 17 grand a system and it still embarrassingly crashes every once in a while (usually to a packed venue) though it's impossible to say if that's the media, the OS, hardware or the application. . XP pro is even more expensive at £259.99 for the full install & £169.99 for the upgrade, and I’m lead to believe this is again only for one machine. XP was supposed to be copy proof when it got released. The fact it had been cracked before it was even out says something about the state of things currently and i can't see that changing in a hurry. I wouldn't bank on Microsoft being able to write an uncrackable piece of software going on the security of their other projects..... Last time Microsoft blocked people downloading updates because of hacked versions, crackers produced a way of changing the license key on the machine and provided a list of known good keys. It may not be worth Microsoft the money to chase a target they might never catch. And as for pricing, ebuyer were selling XP Pro oem for under £100 so no problems there really. jackwabbit 0 Posted March 18, 2005 Report Share Posted March 18, 2005 I feel part of the problem is because Micro$oft products are so expensive more people will use cracked versions, so Micro$oft will spend more money to try & stop them & who is going to pay for it? The people buying their products & as the price goes up more people will use dodgy copies, and it just goes on & on. When I first started with computers it was DOS2, then DOS3, 4, then Windows 2, 3, 3.1, 3.22 then Windows 95, 95SE, 98, 98SE, then ME. I had genuine copies of all these operating systems, some as full install & some as upgrades. I drew the line at 2000 there was no way I was going to spend even more money, but at least these reasonably priced & could be used on every machine in your house. Uncle Billy has realised that more & more households are having more than one machine, so he has jumped on the band-wagon by allowing Windows XP to be used on one machine only. I haven’t rushed into getting XP for this reason & still wouldn’t have it, if it didn’t come with the new computers. I know a lot of people who flatly refuse to go to XP for this very reason, and they have all said “if it was a reasonable price & could be used on all their machines they would get it” (these are the same people who are now looking at Linux) I’m sure if the price was better & it could be used on more than one machine, more people would get the genuine article, & they wouldn’t have to spend a fortune trying to stop the crackers. Get over it , if you cant aford it then you are kidding your self... the average life of a desk top pc is 3 to 4 years.. if you buy XP with your system thats £79 of the cost thats 1460 days of tech support and free updates for £79 or 0.5p per day....... find me another company who can offer you that level of service for that price ? oh and dont forget the 1 year of free anti virus software that now comes with XP and the free anti spyware software that is also going to be part of the package.... <a href="http://www.djassociates.org"><img src="http://www.djassociates.org/anims/compres_banner.gif" alt="Join the DJ Associates Disc Jockey Association" border="0" width="468" height="60"></a> Link to post Share on other sites

norty303 0 Posted March 24, 2005 Report Share Posted March 24, 2005 All XP versions are essentially the same on the disk, it's just a coded reference on the CD which determines whether it is read as XP home, pro or corporate. using an editor you can copy the cd, modify the code and burn it back as another version.
