Roadshow or "Compact Disco"

Mick's raised a good point and one that I've focussed a lot on with my rig. How many trips from your vehicle do you make into the venue when you set up? Be realistic in your count- possibly even count the trips on your next event, no matter how small the trip might be. I think I'm at 5 trips, but I'll double-check this weekend.

Small set up = 4 trips

Large Set up = 10 plus if flat, if stairs, about 16.

.....but what do I know ?

If it's level (or ramps/lift etc) then one trip is all that I require to get all my gear in and out. I posted a picture on here last year showing how I do it.

If there are stairs involved then about ten trips are required http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/sad.gif although I'm working on a way to reduce this without effecting the overall look of the set-up.

Rendezvous, we need a poll for this one mate!

You're right Brian. Here's the poll.

The quick and clean set-up and pack down is certainly one of the major advantages in having a compact show and that's why I believe it's the way forwards for elegant events. Youth events will probably always need the full whack.

So 9 trips once you have carried the roadie in. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif

Full rig 20 trips to Van cn be reduced to 15 if I can use the trolley.

I usually have Roadie, Wife, Daughter with me (Not all at once http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/fear.gif ) and this cuts the trips for me but over a month it's like doing the http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/censored2.gif marathon.

Yes time for a change I'll get two wives.

I'm very much in favour of the 'small is beautiful' approach - your marquee rig and lighting positioning Richard are very similar to what I use. I do like the LED frontage you have Brian - might have a go at something like that myself and great to see I am not the only person still using PAR cans - they're still great if you put them on a decent dimmable controller (I use an NJD logic 8000). I wouldn't have the speakers on the floor at that venue though (is it Finchcocks?) I always have them up on poles (Hysis 2 on their own) or put HySys 1's on stands and run the HiSys 2's on the floor.

My latest trick was to put everything in huge coffin boxes, and bought a job lot of castor wheels, can do a full show in 5 trips in speaker stack.

Stairs are a different matter!

I found that even though the larger show gets my no more money night after night, it gets me more nights!

Getting back to the thread topic, those of you who have downsized your rigs, did you have difficulty parting with your surplus equipment? I still have masses of 12" and 7" vinyl that I just can't bring myself to get rid of and I don't even have a turntable to enjoy them on any more!

Don't do it! I mad the big mistake of getting rid of most of my vinyl in the mid 90's, and I have regretted it since http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/014.gif

It sounds like most people here are of the belief that the compact system is the way to go for most elegant events and the 'Roadshow' big rig is better for youth events. So based on that, what area of your setup could you streamline more to lower the visual aspect and hopefully reduce your trips to and from your vehicle?

I am about to design and build a smaller, lighter DJ console. What I have is a useful size, but it could be smaller and it most certainly needs to be lighter!

I like my compact setup, I get there and after half hour of connecting its all set which means I get out and home sooner too

And the crowd don't notice the difference, as it has been said, you are the person that entertains, not your gear
