Feedback Destroyer

I've just read High Fidelity's topic about the Ultragraph. I think this will allow him to adjust chosen frequency's to his preference whilst also acting as a feedback destroyer.

 

I am in the market for a feedback destroyer and Behringer are top of my list. My preferred model is brand new soon to be released FBQ 2496.

 

Not being a sound engineer I really don't know what I should be buying.

 

Should I stick with my £120 new model that has a "set-it and forget-it" mode (feedback destroyer for dummies) or should I spend about £60 LESS and get a built-in equaliser as well?

 

Also, now that my local friendly Congleton Sound and Light specialist has moved on, I need a new source/shop. Can anyone, preferably in my area (Crewe/Stoke), recommend a decent, reliable, trustworthy DJ shop - if there is such a thing.

Hi - it looks to me like this will have an equaliser as well?

If it's going to be a 'sound shaping tool' and act as a parametric

filter?

From what I read about feedback destroyers, they don't destroy the channel affected, they cut it out, BUT IF the feedback is on another channel too, it cuts that out too, so in theory you could have no channels left, and therefore no microphone at all.

As far as I'm aware, they don't cut out the channel, they apply a very narrow EQ notch filter to cut out the frequency of the feedback.

Yes, thats how it works. When it detects feedback it cuts a very narrow band at the problem frequency. You can normally set them so that they release after a period or leave them locked on until manuallly released. The auto release is good for singers who move around a lot, the latched filters are good for things like turntable feedback where if it occurs will likely be a problem for the whole night.

Yes they apply a narrow notch filter at the frequency that is feedbacking back, then another to the next frequency, etc. The more filters that are applied, the more you notice a drop in sound quality. (They also tend to miss-read long notes and certain sounds in music as being feedback, and drop unnessary filters in on these too.)

 

The sound quality is also affected by how wide these notch filters are. The top end units have very narrow notch filters. Lower cost units (like a Behringer Shark I have) use wider filters, and are a bit slower to react.

 

I guess it depends on what you want to use one for.

Thats right - although I beleive that he's still got a few bits knocking around at keen prices.

We have got a few other suppliers now registered on the forum, some old ones, who have been hiding their ("OPEN") light under a bushell for a while, and others that have been invited to join. All retailers are permitted to advertise a monthly special offer etc, in the appropriate section, as well as answering members enquiries for pricing etc, in appropriate threads.
