Hey Sparko don't feel down graded. I still use light boxes and I think they are great.

I did have one rather unusal compliment once "It's really nice to still see an old fashioned style disco" Maybe it is a little old fasioned but so many people still say how good they look and I like them so much I'm thinking about building new ones http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif

Why don't we start making hellium filled bubble wrap?<P> It would help keep postage costs down.

I ticked other.

I have an MDF homemade stand, covered in black cloth. It folds flat, into a W-shape and has fold-down shelves. I can fold it down in seconds, with the cloth surface inside for protection and simply secure it with a couple of expanding straps. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/thumbup.gif

Our led scrolling sign clips on the front. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif

I also have light boxes for some shows. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/whistling.gif

I ticked other like robbie.

I have a custom made stand built out of chipboard with a pine re-inforcements.

It is painted black. On front I have Nights Sounds cut out with a a jigsaw, day glow orange card behind so I can shine a light through. Looks really effective.

Also on front is a slot where 2 x 4 spot bank fit. There are black clips to dress with rope lights if required.

It can have uprights bolted to it for an overhead gantry to fit to.

It has served me well and is over 12 years old! Was originally designed to fit in a Rover 400 boot!

I will try and post a picture!

I use a Starcloth booth made by S+H Technologies, everytime I use it I get positive comments from the venue management.

It just looks so much better then the cloth I was using before

Hi

I went for black cloth, and it looks bloody awful so as soon as the other DJ guy gets time we're gonna do a DIY start cloth.

Same here

I have used a starcloth for around a year ....imo more effective than a screen and take much less space in transport (although I have no hatred of 'tidy' light screens!!!)

If i could post an image it would give a better idea of what its like!!!

I've heard rumours of a LED light screen that looks like a bar display along the lines of High Fidelity or Gary's avatar. Not seen one in action yet, but i think they would look quite effective, assuming that it went with the music like the one on your mixer.

Trust me when I say it lights up just like the LED's on your mixer http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif

  • 6 months later...

Light screens. (Home made.)

One central one, 3 foot by 3 foot powered by a 4-channel sequencer, and 6 others, 3 each side, each about 3 foot high by 8 inches wide with coloured gel behind the front to individually colour them red, green and blue, and powered by a 3-channel sound to light unit.

Very basic configuration, but very effective judging by the way seated members of the audience stare apparently mesmerised by it. The strong primary colours have an interesting effect on hall decoration also.

Pitty it all looks so scruffy when the house lights go on........ http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/sad.gif

Going under the name Sgt Pepper, I have had a 4' x 3' perspex screen made with an out take from the Sgt Pepper photo shoot on! Cost me £100 but when I put a light behind it, it looks like a stained glass window! I've had lots of favourable comments aboout it, plus the punters always look at it to recognise the faces etc. Plus subliminally, they remember the name...for better or worse!

whats so wrong with this

Light screens

Aside from the fact that you appear to have a blown bulb in one of the blue panels, there's nothing wrong with those except that it's no longer 1983.... http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/huh.gif

But then you knew I was going to say that, didn't you. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif

ooooo check mate http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif

theres no right or wrong answer for using light screen,/star cloth/black curtain etc..., our discos/setups are like our personalitys i guess? for example take richards disco looks basic, but its sophisticated and professional and by looking at some of his photos he's posted, his disco im guessing is aimed for mainly for "posher" events (sry about wording i cant think of another word http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/tongue.gif ) to someone elses disco, where they have every gismo you can think of?....

my setup is normal i guess i wouldnt know how to describe it someone else would have to be the judge of that, 2 lights, a mood/light screen http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/tongue.gif , medium sized pa system, my custom made stand, and ofcourse cd's

nice screens, what kind are they and where abouts did you get them from if you dont mind me asking?

3ft DAP Audio, diamond cross and quad rainbow..

about £180 a pair available allover the place.

this light screen debate only started because some djs have old faling apart light screens or you can't fit them in our car..

star cloth looks good on a small setup, but when your takeing a full road show out and need to take up space on a stage or fill one end of a hall then I think light screens look good.

just don't over do it http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/rolleyes.gif

Just ordered a 7metre x 3 metre star cloth for my big rig and I'd pick a star cloth over lightscreens any day of the week. Just think they look old fashioned these days.

Sorry Mark http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/tongue.gif

"and need to take up space on a stage or fill one end of a hall "

Spot on, Marky.

In my opinion, in a hall you need something to fill one end, or nearly so. I've seen the 'minimalist' setups in village halls, and to my mind it looks like the DJ left something at home.......

In a 'posh' venue, the situation is reversed, as you don't need a large rig - it would simply get in the way.

Horses for courses, I suppose - a case of tailoring the lighting to fit your most commonly visited venue.
