Meta tags - Templates - Dreamweaver - Help!?

Recommended Posts

I use Dreamweaver MX 2004.

I have used a template to create my site, which has 36 pages, but I would like to be able to change the meta tags on each of the individual pages, but for some reason the template has locked them and I can only edit them on the template page meaning that every page based on the template would have the same tags http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/sad.gif

Does anyone who is familiar with Dreamweaver and the templates know how I can make the keywords, description, subject etc editable?

Anyone able to offer any suggestions? http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/533.gif

Thanks. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/thumbup.gif

Eskie,

I'm afraid I'm still using Version 2 (hey - I'm a Scot, what can I say? LOL) but I'll check with a few of the techies to find out how to do this - it MUST be do-able.

I'll get back to you tomorrow.

Cheers,

Jack.

Sorry, cant help here as I havent used a template in Dreamweaver.

But, I would of thought that its a good idea to have the same meta tags on every page of the website??

Obviously I don't know what you are doing, but I thought that it was best for getting placed on Google if you keep your keywords and meta tags the same?

All the meta tags on my disco website are the same on every page and my website does quite well on Google http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/smile.gif

Hi

Joe, you need different meta tags on each page simply because each page you write is going to be on a slightly different topic.

Examples

A page about weddings would have a totally different title, description and set of keywords to that for a page about kids birthday discos.

If you're using the same meta keywords, description and title for each page, the search engines will drop you in the relevancy stakes.

As for the Dreamweaver thing, not a clue, sorry.

Eskie, try this,

Look at the HTML for your template. For anything to be editable it has to appear within a section as follows:

<!-- #BeginEditable "doctitle" -->

Eskie's wonderful mobile disco services

<!-- #EndEditable -->

That would allow you to change the title of pages built from your template. It sounds to me like your meta data isn't sitting in an editable section. If that's the case, simply add the editable tags for the meta data. I'm not sure if there is a naming convention but you could try something like this:

<!-- #BeginEditable "metatags" -->

<!-- #EndEditable -->

I've just created a quick template like that here and the page built from it allows me to edit the meta tags - hopefully this will work in your up-to-date, whizzy version :)

Let me know how you get on.

Cheers,

Jack.

Ahh, I understand.

Cheers Darren, I stand corrected. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/smile.gif

Hi Joe,

I'd agree with Darren about the tags - it is worth covering all the bases. Although Google looks at the tags it's worth pointing out that it places far greater emphasis on other items such as domain name, page title, headings, hyperlinks. For that reason I'd also suggest you add some of the search terms into the page titles. You are 169th on Google for "mobile disco essex" and 119th for "mobile dj essex". Effectively, people don't tend to look further than around 29th at most (unless they haven't found what they are looking for).

You have made the titles look very nice with the dots and the pipes, but you could add a little bit of text after each one to get you up the rankings while keeping them looking good.

Cheers,

Jack.

Hey Eskie - did that solve your problem?

I've actually started building the basics for my site, and putting the metatags in the

within editable tags is working for me.

Good luck,

Jack.

Jack, you're a genius mate, http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/thumbup.gif yep it worked. I made the changes to the template late last night and then was able to add keywords, description etc to the index page of my site. i haven't tried any of the other pages yet but i see no reason why it won't also work on those as they are based on the same template.

I posted the same question on 3 web design forums last week and not one of them was able to offer a solution, one told me it can't be done http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/huh.gif and another offered the most complicated 'solution' you could imagine, which didn't even properly address the issue!

So thanks a lot Jack, you're a star http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/notworthy.gif

That's 'cos web designers don't hang out in web design forums - too full of "script kiddies" LMAO

Just let me know where to send the bill ;)

I'm glad it worked http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif
