Weekend 23rd/27th June 2005

Kingy, it is three set ups, one for the wedding ceremony, one for wedding breakfast and evening disco too.

The main entrance is upstairs so will need to go in the rear ( http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/nono.gif ) and set them up and I have not seen the access so need to get there a little earlier.

.....but what do I know ?

Saturday: did a 40th in Horsham with my daughter DJ Loulou! Normally, I would not dream of using child labour, but this was a friend of a friend, so Louise was welcome. Louise was a great help getting the gear unloaded and re loaded, getting all the drinks in, getting the food from the buffet, and even did a bit of DJing too. We played to 100 or so guests who were really up for a good dance, even managed to embarrass the birthday girl with Long haired lover from Liverpool!

I was really surprised when someone came up and said they recognised me as I had done their wedding 16 years ago in a venue about 50 miles away - just shows how important the music is at a wedding, they remembered what a great time they had http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/cool.gif .

Here's DJ Loulou in action:

We got in at 1:30am, Louise was up at 7am this morning http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/mad.gif

OK, now off for the PTA sponsored bike ride then.....

Friday - took the night off and put a newbie Jock into the residency.

He did very well but decided not to use the mic at all.

'Tony' was nervous but encouragement and praise goes a long way.....he enjoyed it too. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/smile.gif

Made a change for me on the night - being on the 'other side of the fence'!

Was invited to a 'Hen Party' table (regulars) and decided to let me hair down!

Stone cold and swealtering in the heat, good laughs, dancing to classic old skool, anthems and cheese was excellent.....company accepted! http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/smile.gif

Saturday - 40th Birthday, Kent.

70 out of 100 guests turned up - slow start, plod build up but excellent finish along with good feedback.

One young lady (guest) came over to ask how much I charged? So I politely replied and asked if she was planning a function?

She said no, and then said that her boyfriend was a DJ and earn't £1000 a night.

Excellent I said! Was he radio, mobile or club DJ?

Ermm.....a mobile DJ I think! He uses the same gear as you but I can't remember the name. It's very cool.

Pioneer, Denon, Technics, Vestex, Allan & Heath, Numark (to help jog her memory)?

She shakes her head.

Kam?

YES! That's it! He uses Kam!

Excellent I said.

Works local, around the Uk, London, I asked?

No, locally!

At which point her friends drag her back to the dance floor.

http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/smile.gif

I'd like to earn £1000 per night as a mobile DJ!

Big requests for the night was

'Two Tribes' - FGTH

'Everything She Wants' - Wham

'Don't You Want Me' - Human league

Along with Abba, Queen and most popular 'Party Tunes'.

Friday night had a company BBQ... Solicitors who charge £185 an hour...

Buggers....

Anyway, they had a wild west/country theme so had employed some Line Dancers to give em an hours lesson plus some guys to show them archery and run an archery competition...

An alright night, not a lot of dancing, but the organiser came and thanked me profusely saying they had all enjoyed it as they like to chat and the music was at a nice volume for them to do that.. And that they had all enjoyed the music played...

Nice..

Saturday, my first night back at another residency (not that busy this one).. A wedding. Aweful night.. No dancing (maximum ever on the floor at one time was 8, and 5 of those were children)... Strange mix of requests, from the Crazy Frog to Napalm Death...

Bride thanked me for a great night, but if it had been one of my first gigs, wouldve made me want to stop!! Again, goes to show that some people just enjoy talking and not dancing....

I would have thought a Dick Turpin / Highwayman type theme would have been more appropriate. Or you could have worn a black and white hooped jersey and black mask and carried a black bin liner with the word 'Swag' written on it http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/tongue.gif .

My Weekend:-

Thursday Night, Primary School disco at Northwich. Very Hot, lots of snow (!), glowsticks and Games. Managed to get a booking for another local school in that area out of it.

Friday, Wedding Reception at Chester Zoo http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/scared.gif . Got there nice and early to set up and then have a free wonder around the zoo during the meal and speeches http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/thumbup.gif . A nice location but the function room is literally a maze of rooms and two seperate bars on two levels and so the disco is not visible to 100% of the guests since they are spread out over several rooms. Not the best layout around for a function and so you just have to entertain whoever is in the same room as you at the time.

Saturday - Nothing.

Friday, arrived at venue, local golf course to find the function room with buckets everywhere! A new roof was being put on and that morning it was decided to remove the old roof, before the new felting was added...... By 8pm it had sort of dried out! Slow start, played some adult games which went down well and had all the women dancing. Ended on the d-day girls fav, cha cha slide!!!!

Saturday, wedding in marquee. Arrive 30mins earlier as these evens always have problems, and this one had no exception!!!

No power! The marquee firm supplied a huge well silenced generator. The problem was the cable from it to the marquee distribution was standard 13A cable. The first 30A plug melted at the terminations due to the fantastic heat generated. Quick look round and the problem was obvious (well to me anyway!) The caters had 3 hot plates and 2 hot water urns, and a huge trailer fridge. Probably 30A at least!!!!

Anyway this wasn't the real problem, access was. I was to be in the end portion of the marquee, sort of smaller tent linked to the main one. The walls were firmly staked down and internally lined. The marquee company were really unhelpful and said access was round the front which would have meant all gear would have do be carried in through 200 guests sitting at tables. Quick note to the Best Man and the wall came down from within! Hey presto instant access.

The floor was very uneven and sloping, but everything worked OK. Once the caters had packed away no more power problems and the night went well. The BM was really useful, it makes such a difference!

Kept levels down all night until the B&G left, so for the last 45mins it was mental!!! Classic 80's and 90's ending of livin' joy dreamer, finally ending up on NY NY at 12:15.

Break down was interesting as I had to supply my own work lights. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/censored2.gif

Roll on next week!

Absolutely, I don't really drink alcohol very often - maybe once a month. Never at a gig. Besides it was so hot on Saturday, we needed loads of lemonade.

Thanks Steve, what you see is a Poineer DM600 with 2 CDJ1000 CD turntables - awesome bit of kit, dead easy to use, and high quality to boot.
