I've just been down to a pub where they have a disco, the DJ is an old friend of mine. We've both been doing the town for about 25 years now and we got talking about music selections during an evening. He asked me, if it was 8:30pm at a large social club in town, would I know what I would be playing. To which I shrugged my shoulders and said I had no idea. He turned to me and said he would, he reeled of his usual 80's set and 90's and so on. So I said, what, do you play the same cheesy tracks all the time? to which he replied Oh yes. Okay they fill the floor and yes everyone knows them and yes every crowd he plays to is different but it's not very imaginative. I know sometimes it's unavoidable but surely it's more challenging to play something a bit different. He did'nt agree with me, what do you people think?? http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/rolleyes.gif

next time you see this bloke, do your town a favour and http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/fish.gif or at least http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/sterb188.gif

His clients might as well be hiring a tape recorder http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/thumbdown.gif

The worrying thing is that the other DJ specified times...eg: What to play at 8:30 etc... thats scary...all sorts of things about a function can affect the timings and the mood of the crowd too...eg: A sweltering hot wedding day, everyone dolled up to the nines in attire that they've choosen weeks before the day...that they were going to HAVE to wear, regardless of a heatwave, halestorm, or hurricane...

I think that most DJ's that I've seen perform more than once tend to have "mental tapes" (in our minds) of things that go well together. I know that if a crowd is dancing well to Song X, then Song Y, and Song Z also tend to go down better than tracks F and R etc...etc... Therefore I tend to have "mental tapes" of "clusters" of songs that'll I'll play. These "clusters" tend to be by Era, or Genre, or two in a row of a particular artist/group...a couple of know sing-a-long crowd pleasers, a few audience participation tunes...(YMCA, Blame it on the boogie, Time warp, rowing boat song etc)

What will overide almost ANY percentage of my own "mental tapes" are audience requests...what better way of playing what THAT audience on THAT night want than prompting for requests from THAT audience... Thats why I give them 3 ways to request... *) Come up and talk to me *) Fill in the request slips on the tables/stage *) SMS me on the number on the slips... OK, if some person keeps handing me request slips for Iron Maiden, or Sex Pistols or Eminem then theres gonna be a little more paper confetti, than anticipated .... but THATS part of the DJ's role isnt it?...not wasting 1/50th of the gig, by playing some nasty floor emptier/bar filler. If we played EVERY request we got (and had in our collection) then we'd be a true juke box...

If our crowds like cheese, want cheese, demand cheese...bring on the cocktail sticks with Pineapple. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif

My m8 is exactly the same, he plays the same stuff every disco. I did a disco with him the other weekend and we set up, I said "shall we do a sound check then" he replied "go on then I never bother". During the disco (which was a wedding) there was I think 10 people dancing out of 80-100 guests, and that was because he went to the toilet and left me in charge of the music, apart from that he wasn't open to suggestion's so I just sat there. He literally sits there and picks a disc up (from random), plays it then goes and get's another pint (least he paid for my drinks alnite!!!)

He doesn't get many booking's when he does, its because he's cheap £80 (kent). oh yeah this party (wedding) we did he didn't know who was married, what their first song was or anything,I could'nt believe it.

I won't give his name out because their will be 350 people wanting to kill him-LOL

I think cheese is a very subjective! Afterall one persons cheese is another persons all time favourite! I really upset one lady madly in love with Chesney Hawkes when I announced the cheesy zone! However there are all "those" tracks that fill up the same old party compilations. On another note don't you get hacked off with all these so called upto date compilations NOW xx, HITS xx, BEST EVER...., BEST HITS xx etc and a good 50% all have the same tracks!!!!! I only have NOW as I have 1-54 1-20 on vynl 20+ on CD.

WOW! What a co-incidence...thats exactly the split that I have of Now albums on Vinyl/CD...I did try to get the earlier NOW albums on CD, but only found NOW 13.

Someone offered me £35 for "Now 1" about a year ago, and offered me £50 for it two months back...I think I'll hang onto it for a bit longer then...I keep telling this bloke that I WILL sell it, but only once I've made sure I've got all the tracks on CD first - so he keeps phoning once every so often, and the price keeps rising....hmmm, maybe I'll sell in a few years....for a couple of hundred £.

Yeah, you buy the cds with all the new one's on, but you've always got the ones on the second disc. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/mad.gif

Now, I stick to buying albums http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif

At 11:00am (edt) on June 25th there were 4.6 million people simultaneously using the Fastrack network that supports KaZaa and Grokster. If they return to the network tomorrow, nearly all of them could face prosecution from the record labels. That’s because the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) will start collecting the names of individuals who are sharing files of copyrighted music over Peer-To-Peer networks.

Recorded music sales are down about 25% from the peak in 1999 and the labels say they’ve had enough. Based upon the experience in recently prosecuting four college students who were running campus-based P2P networks, as well as the results of anti-theft efforts in other industries such as satellite TV, the RIAA has concluded that deterrence works. Now they want the file sharers to understand, beyond a shadow of doubt, two fundamental points. . First, you are not anonymous. Second, some of you shall be prosecuted, because if you are stealing our goods, you are not a customer anyway.

Good to know that the Worlds Law Enforcement resources are put to good use. No doubt it'll fall to them to carry out the paperwork associated with bringing down these "hardened P2P criminals".

In the meantime Glastonbury can magically produce 700+ police to target ticket touts, whilst in todays local paper I read about a 75 Year Old woman having to wait 2 hours for the local police to drive 7 miles from the nearest police station , after she was physically attacked. All because they've now closed our local police station due to "Lack of funds". I wonder how much this little effort will cost, compared to how much they are spending on fighting other harder hitting problems...Drugs for instance!

I'm not saying that P2P is right, neither am I supporting Ticket Touts, just saying that it's about time we put our priorities first before worrying about some record company CEO only being able to afford to change his fleet of 5 Mercedes just once this year.

Still at least despite all those ££££'s of Tax Payers money policing William's 21st Birthday, at least he got both cheeks kissed by the working class - Something that Royalty have always demanded since time began!.

Hi folks

The now's up to now 10 were only available on that old plastic stuff and tape. I have now 11, 12, 14, 15 18 and 20 through 54 on cd.

I never have a nights music worked out in my head. I do have a mental log of songs that tend to work well together and certain songs that I play as floor fillers, but I also like to slip some stuff in their that will make folks thing "jesus I haven't heard this one in ages!"
