Dave80s 0
here's a dilemma that someone I know had at a recent wedding. The groom said he would sort out the 1st dance on the night as they hadn't decided. On the night the groom handed over the 1st dance tune on a CD-R, copied - and my mate is against piracy etc. - neither party had the original, so what would you do? For the record he played it! Another similar dilemma I have had myself is the father of the bride requesting a song, and handing it over on a burnt CD - would anyone refuse??
Gary 0
I'd play it - then hand it back. Simply to avoid the fuss from the Bride, The groom, their families and friends etc, etc, etc. Edited August 7, 2005 by Gary
High Fidelity 0
I'd play it, but would point out the T&C's on the booking form about only playing customer supplied music being on original CD's, and would refuse to play any others from the CD. FDDJ 0
I would play it, but refuse to play any other material provided on a CD-R. Play it, hand it back, end of 'dilemma' Those of you who have a daytime job, if the boss came up to you and asked you to do something like that you would do it, the bride and groom are your boss for the night, they are paying, just do it. .....but what do I know ? Kingy 0
I would play it.... whats the real hassle? Is it worth the arguement? It may be against my principles, but I just can not be arsed to argue with a client over such a trivial point.

I feel that on each night you are employed by the client to do as he/she wishes (as ADS said) you will not be breaking any laws in playing. See my post on the weekend fun day for the council here. The 1st thing I did was to offer to show all my paperwork, PLI, PAT etc. Nobody, not even the H&S officer in attendence wanted to look at them. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/wallbash.gif Not only that, but they informed me that PPL wasn't required as the event was free entry. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/fear.gif What book do they work from? Dukesy 0
No fuss approach - if playable, play it. If it wont play, suggest the 'clock' idea from Gary. or a coffee mat, etc, etc
pdarnett 0
I get the bride and groom to specify first dance long beforehand, if i haven't got it then i buy it from itunes, burn it to cd, do a nice cd label and case, and present it to them on the night (after I've used it). All legit, no worries.
Gary 0
One thing to consider, which we all missed (including me) earlier on in the thread, is that the CD-R that the customer hands you, complete with his permanent marker title scribbled on the sticky label, can nowadays be as legit as a shop-bought CD, thanks to the various 100% legal download services, offering anything from singles to full CD albums. Who's to know. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/533.gif As discussed previously, some DJ's might not be able to play CDRs simply due to equipment compatibility - eg: CD-players more than 5 years old for example, simply might not play them correctly. mick 0
I have come across this on several occasions and I always play them. I think it is a classical risk assesment of the most likely to have repercussions on your reputation. As Gary rightly says, it would be wrong to assume that this is an illegal copy, and as Ian says would be best for your reputation just to play it as requested- Mick
