Help - Wedding on Thursday

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone

Have a wedding coming up on Thursday where the B&G only just sent me an e-mail on requests...

It goes:

Janis Joplin........Summertime

The Ramones...Baby I love you

Lead Zep.......Babe I'm gonna leave you ( at a wedding ? Yes I know )

The Undertones..... Teenage kicks

We would like to request that NO novelty records are played. We also can't stand that Acon one with the squeaky voice thing going on.Or Huey Lewis and the news or Abba

We will bring Janis Joplin's Greatest hits album with us  and would like Maybe and Bobby McGee  also to be played at some point. We love James Brown Prince Rolling Stones ,Mooney Suzuki, Kaiser Chiefs, Aretha Franklin , Jimi Hendrix, The Who, Kinks , Stone Roses, The Doors, Ghost Town by the Specials is a quality track although not that Discoey ( If such a word exists) Blur  ( or the Gorillaz) Pulp.  Any of the tracks from the Pulp Fiction or Lock stock sound tracks  ( 18 with a bullet is excellent for example )......All this stuff doesn't mean we are not into our dance music...ohhh no...We also love Basement Jaxx, Faithless, Robert Miles, Moby, The Orb, Leftfield, 808 State, House of Pains' Jump Around is quality,  Ok I think this is enough guidance into the music likes and dislikes of Sarah and Steve , we will leave it up to you from here . Shake ya funky thing and see you Thursday .

Now I know there are a few tracks in there, but can anyone recommend the better tracks from say Mooney Suzuki (who?), The Ramones, Hendrix etc as I have never had to play them, or especially if you could recommend anything similar that they havent mentioned so I dont look like I am just repeating what they have asked for....

Many many many thanks for your help!

Tony

Faithless insomnia. make sure you play the origianl mix not the radio edit (im talking about the one where the words dont come in untill the last bit so you have time to mix out of it well before they start)

The orb, little fluffy clouds was there biggest track but im sure you can find one or two more...

leftfield, it has to be Open up, nuff said

808 state, pacific 808 so cool.....

The Ramones...Baby I love you

Great tune! You'll recognise it from TV adverts as soon as you hear it http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/headphone.gif

Other tunes you could play:

The Kaiser Chiefs - "Oh My God" and/or "I Predict A Riot" (from the album Employment)

Pulp - "Common People" and/or "Disco 2000"

The Ramones - "Blitzkrieg Bop" (from their greatest hits "Anthology")

Robert Miles - "Children"

Moby - "Go"

Music from Pulp Fiction: Dusty Springfield - "Son of a Preacher Man", Kool & the Gang - "Jungle Boogie", Al Green - "Let's Stay Together"

Music from Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels: Robbie Williams - "Man Machine", James Brown - "The Boss", The Stone Roses - "Fools Gold"

Enjoy http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/thumbup.gif

Why would you wanna mix out before the words? Whenever I play it the crowd always love to sing along.

OH MY GOD!!! THE PERFECT WEDDING SET LIST!!!

I would LOVE this gig. I'd almost love a little more time to prepare....TWO DAYS????

Anyway, the guys have covered a lot of the stuff - rather than play other tracks from the artists they have mentioned why not play tracks from similar artists/era's? For example, if they like the wonderful Ramones' Baby I Love You, they will probably enjoy The Clash's Rock the Casbah too.

Their taste appears to be slightly rockier than the norm, so pretty much anything with a decent beat and a 'loudness' to it should work - Beatles Twist and Shout, Jerry Lee Lewis Great Balls, that sort of thing.

Let us know how it goes!

Because the words are the worst part of the tune...

And I dont see people singing to them i see them getting bored..

Hit em with the main part of the tune.. hands in the air and let them go wild...

then mix into somthing else before the mood goes...

A gig with no problems, so long as only Sarah and Steve are there... http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/wallbash.gif

Bet they deliberately kept the music list away from you until it was "too late". http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/fish.gif

I'd be tempted to contact the bride & groom and ask if you can collect their offered CD's off of them tonight/tomorrow - explain that this works in their favour (gives them less things to remember to bring with them on the day), and works in your favour, as you get a chance to check that all the CD's play fully on professional/sensitive Disco gear. (Beneficial to the guests too).

Where this benefits you (and ultimately the whole night and all attending) is that you've then got a few hours at home to audition the tracks on each of the CD's and assess which tracks will fair well on a multi-musical taste audience, which tracks are likely to clear the floor, which tracks may have profanity/swearing in them - or be otherwise unsuitable. Just make yourself a list of all the tracks per CD and write down your thoughts on them eg: "Thrashy", "Ballad", "Good dance beat", "progressive", "quiet ending", "good singalong vocals" - "would go well before/after that other track", "Similar to Killerz: somebody told me"....."similar vocals to -should I stay or should I go now"....etc,etc,etc,etc whatever descriptions works best for YOU.

For the sake of a few hours (around 60 tunes) or more, absolutely any genre can be explored, cataloged and grouped in this way to help get you though the night.

OK, you might have a bit of a drive ahead, but it'll help the night - and your nerves.

If the above trip isnt possible - you might find that you can audition some of the tunes free on low-quality streaming services, many legal download services offer a preview button on their '1000's of tunes.

I'd love this gig, their list gives you so many possibilities of other songs to play from the artistes & genres.

Marky, just goes to show how differant audiences/areas vary re faithless, when i play this, (and I do play it at a lot of functions) they love to sing along

Pssst! Marky...you've got a DN-S5000 - stick the words at the beginning of the tune after a good length of instrumental to mix into... or splice 3 minutes of wordless time out of the middle, and chuck it onto the back - ready to mix out into something else.

That way, they wont have had 4 or 5 minutes of "faithless" to get bored to, by the time the words originally kicked in.

Agree.

During Old Skool functions, playing Faithless (requests are for the extended or clubbed up versions) usually I include the excellent lyrics which are an essential ingredient to the record!

But if I want to tease the audience, I'll play any top dance anthems instrumental section!!!!

You can get results and eventual requests for the whole track anyway! http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif

Music presentation is individual.

BTW - Are the clients in their late 30's to early 40's?

I find it interesting that they single out "Ghost Town" by the Specials as being "not discoey", but "Summertime" by Janis Joplin goes onto their list without comment.

It went surprisingly well - The bride and groom were very happy with it, stating that the music was great.. Indeed before the first dance, put on a lot of their requests to a constant "Yeah!! I LOVE this one!" from the Bride.....

The other guests didnt like it as much, as a lot of em were quite "mature" - Did have two guys request Steps 5,6,7,8 and thought they were having a p http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/censored2.gif take - But they did do some great breakdancing to Run DMC so played it for them and they did the whole dance, much to the B&Gs amusement (they did find it funny).

All in all, a gig that I wouldn't like to do again, but it went well...

Special thanks to BigBen (for the post and PM!), StevJam (I Predict a Riot went V well) and Ryandio (They loved the Mooney Suzuki stuff picked!)

We should post that all-to-common insight to wedding receptions, onto a few bride-to-be websites/forums.

Well done Tonsk, especially for all the pre event work you put in on this one.

And a big well done to the guys that Knew and advised on the music.

I was lost on most of it http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/533.gif , but I should think we've got experts on almost any genre here http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/cool.gif

Gives me a feeling of safety when I look at how these gigs get turned around with help from others, and makes me wonder how the solo dj copes http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/scared.gif
