Gary 0
Only two No.1's of this year stayed at the top for 5 weeks each - T'Pau's: China In your Hand, and Rick Astley: Never Gonna Give You Up! In a similar vein, only two tracks stayed at No.1 for 4 weeks - those being - Starships'"Nothings gonna stop us now", and The Bee Gees "You Win Again". 3 weeks in the top spot proved easier to cling onto, as proved by Ben E Kings "Stand by Me", The various artists of Ferry Aid: "Let it be" and The Pet Shop Boys: "It's a sin". Managing a fortnight at No.1 was by this time getting all-too-easy for many artists, Boy George sung about everything he owned (Ken Booth sung it better), Madonna whisked us away to her La Isla Bonita, Whitney Houston wanted to dance with somebody, The Firm were Star Trekkin' (or was it Start Wrecking?), Los Lobos, almost sung about a Disney Baby Deer, and Michael Jackson just couldnt stop loving us. Aaaah, how sweet. and with about the only pop video to make use of video seamless looping (except Herbie Hancock), we had M/A/R/R/S, with Pump up the volume... However, only 2 artists didnt' manage to reach 2 weeks at No.1 - just a Respectable 1 week at the pole position for Mel & Kim, and 1 week too for Madonna enquiring as to the identity of a specific young female... But which of these No.1's of 1987 is the most Disco-friendly for you and your audiences?
