Reciprical linking no longer works. If Google finds a link from site A to site B, then it finds a link from site B back to site A, it cancels them both out and negates any kind of PageRank advantage.

 

The only benefit that there is of exchanging links is if your link is put in a prominent place on someone elses site and you get traffic that way instead of expecting it to boost your search engine placement.

How do you know this? Most of Googles page rank criteria is kept secret and people only guess at what it is and isn't.

I have been building web sites for several years, and I am a keen SEO guru (I wouldnt say expert though). Its been proved that Google are clamping down own so called SEO experts that just farm hundreds of links each day. All Google want to do is to provide relevant search results for their customers and they really dont like people cheating the system in order to get to the top of the tree. Years ago, it was a very positive thing to base PageRank on links, but more and more web masters are becoming aware that link exchanges are a great way to cheat. However the Google algorythms have been changing again and are starting to recognise link exchanges between sites used in order to gain rank. It makes sense though if you think about it. If everyone links to everyone else on the web, then there is no ceiling on the PageRank and the value of its measure becomes negatable. It is a preventative measure that has been put in place to stop SEO companies farming a load of links to cheat the system, similar to the google sandbox idea. Its just a shame that the genuine web sites get caught up in it as well.

 

As for my own link exchanges, I redirect links out through one of my own PHP pages that the search engine spider does not see. It will see the links coming in, but not the links going out. So from the POV of the search engine spider, my site gets lots of links coming in, but it wont see the link back, hence my PageRank gets improved ;)

Just to add...

 

If you host a couple / few websites on the same server (provider) and link back and forth between the websites - Google has got wise to that too!!!

 

Incidently, you can have 16,000,000 links to your website and none returning - but it is not a 100% guarantee that the search listing will find you at the number one slot with a page rank of nine upon a search! That I do know!!!! http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/smile.gif

Some good points there. It all takes time with SEO. The trouble is that you can never have results happen overnight. Its a long and slow process. Good content is always what a web site should contain, no matter what.

No offense Paul, but Google only has 5 pages in its index linking to your site and only your Home Page is indexed. As both links in and number of pages indexed affect your page rank it looks like Google ain't doing you any favours. This is borne out by the fact that typing in the query "paul velocity woking" (which no-one looking for a DJ will do, but it gives the engines something to look for) finds you at No.1 in Yahoo (well done) but nowhere to be found in the top 500 in Google or MSN.

You are quite right, who in their right mind would type "paul velocity woking" into Google? They would be bonkers.

 

Perhaps "funky house dj" would be a better search term. Oh look, I appear to be #2 which is ABOVE Defected records (correct at time of post). I am slo on 1st page of results for MSN too.

What also strikes me as weird is that your search "funky house dj" (without the inverted commas) has you at number 2, but "funky house dj woking" has you outside the top 500. You would have thought that making the search term even more specific by adding a word from your Home Page would have increased your ranking. I can only assume the spider isn't seeing certain parts of the text due to the way the pages are built.

Oh children please, lol

 

Things are changing way too fast for SEO to be of much use. All you can do is buid you site with good relevant and tons of contents, list in relevant directories and get people to link to you.

 

Anything else is just a bit futile.

 

Google has now overtaken Yell.com for how folks find my site, especially in terms of those that turn into confirmed bookings, and I don't do that much to optimise other than right my pages.

 

And guess what, I don't have to stress about it, lol.
