Football fans banned from singing

Recommended Posts

I heard on a radio programme the other day that football fans have been asked to stop singing songs that has been recorded and released by an artist.

This has been requested at televised games (which is all of them) due to the artist/record company`s getting the royalties.

Have you heard as much bull http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/pooh.gif as that in your life??

Steve

5 European cups and 18 leagues, that`s what we call history.

Sounds a bit like an urban myth to me. And even if it were true, how much is the royalty for one play?

Being a Liverpool fan, you should be able to find out how much Gerry Marsden / Rogers & Hammerstein get at every home game - I'd be surprised if it's more than a few pennies.

Cheers,

Jack.

This is quite credible, but I cannot vouch for it being true in this instance.

In the late 80s I had to organise an ultra-legit corporate eventin a bar and had to ensure that ALL angles were covered.

The day after the main party there was to be a "sing song" in the bar with managers doing a turn each. I remember having some frightfully tedious conversation with some jerk who had something to do with music rights.

The end of a tedious conversation was that I had to organise for the purchase of a licence that cost GBP7 as I was unsure of the copyright status of the songs the managers might sing...although he helpfully informed me at one stage that "old sea shanties don't need a licence.."...yes we are taking this tedious level of knit-picking. He also helpfully informed me that we could use it in the venue for a period of time (I forget how long) so because of this it was "good value". I told him that we would only be organising one night in that venue, but could we use it in another venue? No! Could the bar owner use it for another party within the time period...yes if he bought it, no if we bought it. By this stage I was falling asleep and decided not to investigate any further legal minutiae of this, er, fascinating area that provides, er gainful employment, to er, highly-skilled people.

Unlike the "grey area" of digital music, where there are many law-makers at work in the field...UK parliament, UK judiciary, EU parliament, EU judiciary who have different opinions on the matter, sing-songs must be licencsed and there is no dispute about that between the relevant law makers.

I can only imagine that Liverpool FC would have to pay a whopping fee for such a licence owing to its size and the potential "non-party audience exposure", (nationwide TV). I am sure that they also made sure the licence fee went up by at least the rate of inflation also.

This reminded me of something different, but kinda related.

Wasn't there a policy during the olympics that spectators couldn't bring things into the stadium if those things were produced by competitors to the olympic sponsors? For example, if Coca-Cola were sponsoring the olympics, spectators couldn't bring in bottles of Pepsi, because the TV cameras might see the logos.
