I used to have a local primary school some years ago, which had the disco for the infants, then a 15 minute break and a disco for the Juniors.

To stop the infants getting bored I used to do the usual party games, Musical Statues (back in the days when I had patience with kids it used to be fun - especially involving the parents / PTA) I found I needed to break up the continuous music a bit since they easily get bored at this age.

This is Karen's forte' so i'm sure she'll be along to offer some advice on this subject http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/smile.gif

Hi Dangermouse.... This will depend on whether they are filtering the kids in so that they all stay or are they coming and going.... If the latter then you can repeat the tunes but if they are all staying but just turning up at different times then I would imagine that the younger ones will arrive first, in which case I would play the more appropriate music... ie., very cheesey "action" songs..... let me have an idea of the ages if you need any more advice.

One tip is play the most popular stuff during the times that most children are in attendance...

Cheers http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/rolleyes.gif The kids whch are about 5 & 6 will be first followed by the 7 & 8 then they leave then the 9, 10 and 11. So you reckon play the party games first pass the parcel, best dancer ect. then more mature music as the older ones arrive?? hopefully they will forget the 5 & 6 and just 7+ http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif Thanks for the advise. Keep up the good work with the website TIS VERY GOOD!!! http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/notworthy.gif Cheers!!! http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/042.gif

Good luck with it Dangermouse! Remember that kids of 5 wont care if you repeat tunes anyway... especially if they like the song!

One thing that I make the kids do, at the end of the disco/time slot, if their parents are coming to collect them (eg: an after school event), is to sit on the floor, well spaced out (I dont mean they're "high"...I mean lots of gaps around each kiddie), and then get the parents to come and collect.

That way you havent got hundreds of the little darlings all running around the adults.

Another big piece of advice with kiddies do's. A couple of weeks before the kiddies disco...when you're setting up somewhere else...kneel down infront of your disco (to kiddies height) is there ANYTHING at that height that is sharp? could get hot (nozzle of smoke machine), or would look "interesting to pull"? Anything that might get "given a drink of panda pops".... (not only air vents, but also bulbs).

I saw a band once, at a summer fete, where they had 60watt RO80 open reflector bulbs in columns of 8, laying down along the front of the stage, which was only about 2ft high. A toddler somehow got his/her arm too close and got a 4 inch wide blister (doesnt sound big? well now think how big a toddlers arm is?...). Yuk!!!.. Even consider that PAR can beams can be pretty hot, even a couple of feet away...enough to scare, even if not to cause injury...

And arent speaker ports/air vents, JUST the right size for sweets to be poked into....

Basically, just have an extra think about safety. Even if its just you turning from your CD's to you decks and NOT tripping over the little'un thats decided to come up and see you, and was waiting 2 inches behind your left knee...(as they do!)

I agree with all the other comments so far. Normally when I do school disco's they are split into two diferent age groups with a 15 or 30 min break between the two. Inevitably you will play the same songs over again (chart stuff and party dances) The only people who will know are you and the staff, and if the formula worked for the first lot why spoil it by changing it for the second lot. The only thing you may find with the older group is you will get asked for Eminem, Linkin Park etc aswell as the normal party stuff.
