How do you relax?

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know of any "old wives" tips on how to unwind after a gig?

I always find myself wide awake when I get home. Usually with the last tune of the night stuck in my head.

For example do you have the radio on for the journey home? or silence?

Do you have soothing music or speech etc? in the car and/or at home afterwards.

Any tips gratefully received.

p.s why am I always hungry when I get home?

no radio/music in van ........ only on way to gig. Just yak with my son (roadie) on way home...... generally about how gig went.

Then when home. kettle on and feet up with a nice cup of tea for about 20 minutes of silence.

then find i can fall asleep within 5 mins, works for me every time........ if i go straight to bed I just cannot seem to sleep ............ as you said still on a high from the gig.

Failing that straight to bed and wake the wife up http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/censored2.gif ........... that generally doesnt work http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/wallbash.gif

If I've been playing "loud" (eg in a nightclub) - silence on the way home usually, as my ears are ringing and the last thing I want is to listen to more music - then a coffee and a chat to my flatmate who has usually rolled home at the same time from a night out, or work himself.

Otherwise if I've done a wedding or function, listen to Radio 1 on the way home (enjoy the overnight specialist shows), its a break from the cheesy same-old I've just been playing - and once I've finished unloading the gear from the car I'm more than ready to collapse into bed and can be asleep in under a minute, if its after midnight. If it's a bit earlier I usually jump on the internet to check the emails for half an hour or so, and swap comments about the night's gigs with other DJ friends on Messenger!

Hi

Chat with roadie on the way home, no music.

Glass of water when I arrive home and maybe TV channel serf for 20 minutes, then to bed with an audio book, then crash.

Go to bed right after the gig and then get up and go home to the wife by about 5am. Always go to sleep straight away http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/071.gif

If not then i surf the net for an hour, shower, read and then sleep !

I will try anything,once!

if not with my roadie normally listen to classic fm to unwind really does help alot to unwind get home straight into the back bedroom as my beloved has normally been in bed a few hours and being a nurse is sometimes in work the next day as not to disturb i stay in one of the spare rooms.

if with my roadie we just talk about the night classic fm on low and see if everything we thought had gone to plan if not what could we have done different drop him off get home then same as above if she's in work.

If it's a wedding or corporate function finishing at 12am or 1am and I'm close to the city, I'll pack the gear into my Scooby and cruise the strip once with the car stereo off. It takes about 20 minutes and gives me a chance to wind down. I love listening to what's being played in each of the bars as I drive past and I sure love watching all of the happy, staggering people as they sway from bar to bar.

For me, the problem is with non-local gigs (or ones where I'm not staying local to the venue). With gigs where I have to travel a fair distance home, I usually listen to the radio 1 specialist shows (like everyone else, it seems) on the way home and by the time I get home I've wound down enough.

With local gigs, it's more difficult and I usually end up taking a shower, watching rubbish TV, having a warm drink and gradually unwinding.

If I did that around my way I would more than likely end up with a bottle of stella thrown at my car.

I do not need to unwind after the gig - I find that dragging the gear round does that for me! I am getting on a bit these days you see!

Last week we had to get the kit down a spiral staircase, then back up again afterwards (one of the Oxford colleges). After that, the only relaxation technique that worked was a bout of hard drinking!

When I was younger.....ahem.......I'd stick on a cassette and turn the music up on the way home!

Now, I listen to the radio (If I can find something to fit in the background) or it's radio off and a jolly good sing-along with a Sex pistols CD, David Bowie Hits (usually Life on mars, Space oddity, Modern Love, Every One Says Hi.....or Leo Sayer, such as When I need You, One man Band, Raining in my heart, etc.

Sorry folks - but I do happen to like Leo Sayer and My Way by the Pistols!

I also tune into the news every hour. Don't know why - but I do.

And yet, on the way to a gig, I turn on the radio for the traffic reports and the news items.........I think the news has become an obsession! http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/fear.gif
