At the one I did last year I went to blackout after the welcome speil and played a bit of Eve of the War from War of the Worlds while I pumped out the smoke, then hit the lights for Thriller, when the beat kicked in.

Seemed to work quite well. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/533.gif

I am trying to think of somethin different to do, I am in the process of designing a Cauldron and having Smoke overflowing out of it!

This works well, I've done one for previous cul-de-sac parties in our neighbourhood.

Take one metal dustbin (preferably not too smelly), or a plastic water butt, if your after something (slightly) more cauldren shaped.

Make a couple of small drainage holes in the bottom of the bin.

Make a small hole in one side of the bin at the right height for the nozzle of your smoke machine to go through to fire smoke into the bin.

Add 4 coloured light bulbs in batton holders, mounted on a square of wood in 2 x 2 layout - make sure that the wood is mounted on another block of wood to lift it (and the wiring) an inch or two off of the floor of the bin (I had about a half inch of condensed smoke fluid and water in the last few years - probably aided by young potion makers)...if possible try to keep the bulbs out of the direct line of fire from the smoke machine.

usually what happens next is that the the barrel/bin fills up quickly with smoke fluid, but takes a while for some smoke to make it over the top - that last little burst of smoke usually does the trick (or treat).

Added effect...? paint the inside of the bin/barrel white to enhance the reflected coloured light into the smoke. Also work out some way (A cork works well) of pressing the smoke trigger button with your foot (or have a helper-in-the-know) 10ft away with their finger on the button - allowing the smoke to billow up as you reach the climax (oh err) of your spell.

More recently "Pond Foggers" (Maplin) with high intensity colour changing LEDs are available. These sit in a few inches depth of ordinary water and use Ultrasonics to atomise the top surface of the water, giving a dry-ice like mist a few (2~4) inches deep, which is then illuminated by the LEDs. A superb effect BUT be wary of children (or adults) dipping their hands in the water - Ultrasonics HURT. I put my hand over the top of the Ultrasonice impeller/generator on a mini-pond fogger 2 years ago, and my finger felt burnt and numb for about 2 hours, with no outward markings. Ultrasonic generators lose their effectiveness once they're more than a few inches deep, below the surface of the water, so, for a cauldron-like effect, you'd need to have something like a bin/barrel with no more than a deep washing up bowl of water mounted in the top.

Thanks for your ideas Gary! If i was to fill the bottom up of the bin with Ice Cubes wouldnt the smoke come out as a heavy effect and cling to the floor. has anyone experimented with Ice cubes and smoke, and how effective it is please ??

Nathan

I've tried a few DIY low fog ideas with ice, none stunningly successful.

For one thing smoke is hot as it leaves the smoke machine, so melts the icecubes quickly. Also as smoke passes over wet things, it tends to recondence into runny fluid, rather than stay smokey.

The most successful, or rather...least unsuccessful, was when I got several 6inch square pieces of perforated metal, like the holey stuff they make metal speaker grills out of. I froze these with half of each sticking up and the other half in ice. Firing smoke through the perforations caused the smoke to cool, and decend.

Ideally, you'd need a coiled metal pipe frozen in a block of ice, then fire smoke thru it....

...or splash out £170 on a ice fogger...

What a list

Call me dull, but going to the lengths of making a cauldren just for a kids party, doesn't that take up time and effort, for little reward ?

.....but what do I know ?

  • 3 weeks later...

Just taken a booking for a halloween party on Wednesday for a load of students.

Have now got 22 songs (1.5 hours), in the halloween folder so I'll have to find time to listen to them all to refresh my memory.

Suppose I'll have to dig the smoke machine out of the garage too, as they've requested smoke. Haven't used it since halloween last year, so what's the odds on it working. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/fear.gif
