Seeking clarification

Recommended Posts

I've briefly mentioned this in another thread about the Digital DJ(ing) license.

Heres an idea which I've mentioned to the agents of the PPL Digital DJing licenses, in order to clarify the situation for as many different DJ's as possible, before next year when apparently some very big axes start being wielded.

Here goes...I would like DJU members to help compile a list of different DJing Situations. For example:

QUOTE
Disc Jockey "A".
Has been DJing for a few years using original music eg: Vinyl, CD's etc.  Obtains new music from a legal 79p download site and burns those new tracks to CD-R.  This DJ only takes private bookings eg: Weddings, Birthday Parties, Dinner dances - is booked and paid wholely by those families making the booking, or by the venue outright.  This DJ plays only at venues who have their own music licence for playing amplified (main) music rather than organising their own "nights" and charging people £x each "on the door" at some un-licensed venue.

What licence(s) does DJ "A" need?

Disc Jockey "B".
Is about to start DJ'ing and is looking at a harddrive based system (PC/Laptop/Numark HD) wants to get his home CD's ripped onto the laptop and will buy new music from high street shops and internet downloads from legal 79p sites - This DJ is planning on holding their own "Entrance fee" type parties in venues which he can hire legimately, but which are not licensed for music eg: Warehouse/marquee parties.  This DJ may also consider doing private 18th/21st birthday parties.

What license(s) does DJ "B" need?

See where this is going? http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/thumbup.gif

There are, of course several other variations of DJ situation (maybe about half a dozen, so I'm hoping that you can all add any other situations which spring to mind - whether those are your current situation, your future "ideal" situation.... http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/533.gif Doesnt matter - I'll compile the final list and will not quote member names against any of the listed virtual DJ's. I'll then forward the list to a contact I've made at PPL, asking for written confirmation of their answers - and will let you all know that outcome - here, on DJU.

DJ C is has been Djing for quite a while.

He/She owns a very big original collection of CDs and has already ripped some CD tracks to a new laptop via new dedicated DJ Software he/she read about in DJ magazines, etc.

Generally, the DJ uses CDs at functions but has around 500 ripped tracks on the laptop and 80 downloaded tracks (legal download from Tesco).

The type of functions DJ C covers is:

Private Functions (Invitation, Wedding, Corporate, Birthday, etc)

Private Membership Clubs (eg CIU / Affiliated, Community Clubs, etc)

What license will DJ C need?

DJ D has been DJing for many years and has an extensive music collection on original CD's.

He would like to transfer the entire collection to a laptop (including using a further Firewire Hard Drive to assist with storage) as well as carry around 200 CD-R's of MP3's of essential tracks as back up in case of laptop or hard drive failure.

The MP3 playout software he intends to use does not have DRM currently.

Future music that is purchased would be a mix between original CD's and downloads from iTunes.

Functions would be private Weddings almost exclusively.

DJ D is a miserable bugger and only prepared to pay for one licence so suggests PPL and MCPS get their act together and merge.... http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/mad.gif

DJ F travels to Bulgaria for a short holiday and brings a laptop.

During the stay, the DJ connects to the Hotel internet and downloads 20 albums of music (legally paid for @ £0.45 per album) from a Russian MP3 provider.

The DJ is allowed to make up to 3 copies of an album to CDR.

Once back in the UK, DJ F will use the laptop http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/smile.gif

What license does DJ F need if

1 The DJ works full-time as an entertainer / every week for private hire

2 The DJ provides discos as a hobby and runs the business side of things for non profit - makes no money out of the hobby but running costs are covered

3 The DJ works in Public Houses and Council run function halls

4 The DJ provides music for the local school disco

5 The DJ provides music on a carnival float in the town

6 The DJ provides music for exhibitions and fashion shows

7 The DJ has a hotel residency / contracted by a venue to supply entertainment

8 The DJ provides a totally free entertainment service for charity causes

Here's another one for ya!

DJ 'DD': this DJ occasionally produces a mix CD to give out to promoters as a demo disc which contains tracks which may be original CD or vinyl, or white label 12" singles, or mp3 purchased from legitimate suppliers such as itunes or xpress beats which have been burned to a CDR. These tracks will be mixed together and sampled etc. The discs are not for sale to the general public, they are given to other DJs and promoters to demonstrate the DJ's skill.

DJ 'DD' also has a low quality stream of this recording on his website for the same purpose.

2 pronged question

DJ MReZee is a mix DJ and uses a laptop to record his live mixing which he later edits and adds fx filters and compression.

Sometimes, he burns his 'mix' to CDR to forward to record companies / A&R in order to promote his mixing and production skills.

What licence does he need?

DJ MReZee also produces songs (made up from other songs) either a new arrangement or totally unique track but with maybe 6-10 seconds of a bass, drum, percussion or vocal line (sample) from a well known song that is compiled to either mp3, wav file or CDR.

He plays the 'arrangement' at live functions for dancefloor reaction / feedback, as well as forwarding to the record companies for same.

What licence does he need?

DJ EU and DJ US both like visiting the UK to see good friends there.

DJ EU and DJ US have perfectly sane laws governing the playing of music in their home turf.

While there, their UK DJ friend has 2 gigs he badly needs to cover, so both DJ EU and DJ US whip out their laptops and say "no problem, we'll pile on to help you out".

Where do they stand?

Hi

DJXYZ had a huge collection of CDs which have been ripped to his pc for personal listing use.

However, said DJ has sold a good deal of his CD collection and wishes to DJ for a laptop alone.

He also uses software that does not offer the Digital Rights management system.

He'll just play the normal bog standard mobile DJ gigs, some private, some public.

DJ K currently DJs from original CDs, but wants to do the following:

  • Copy the CDs to CD-Rs for taking out to gigs (so he doesn't worry about losing/damaging originals)
  • Produce CD-Rs containing the best tracks from the original CDs (so he doesn't have to carry so many CDs with him)
  • Copy the original CDs into MP3 tracks on CDs (so he can carry less CDs when he's playing at places with CD decks which can play MP3 CDs)

Some great suggestions so far, I'll let this topic run another few days and then send it off into the void formally known as PPL.

  • 2 weeks later...

I think that's every possibility covered that I can think of Gary.

Out of interest, the next SEDA meeting on 20th November 2005 will see a visit from Digital DJ (mastermix) at Maidstone from 7:30pm. Non members are also welcome to attend. I will have more on this later.

Cheers,

Brian

DJ Dongle uses an internet link (24mb) connection to play mp3s live at a function with internet facility on premises.

The internet site is legit - files can not be stored on the computer system and are encripted via a special software program called JuicyMix.

However, Juicy Mix software will allow the user to purchase individual music files which can be burned to CDR on a limited number of copies in accordance with the sites terms and conditions.

What licences are required?

Right...the email is 99% ready to roll.

However, I need some clarification from some members about their DJ's above.

Transeurope – what sort of gigs are the two DJs covering? EG: Wedding, Club, Pay party etc.

PartyChris – can you elaborate on your thoughts behind “where he plays CD's that has vinyl that he brought”

Hugmaster/Darren – By “Personal listing use” did you mean “Personal listening use” or a “list” eg: database of tracks by title and artist name?

I'll send the email as soon as I get these three points covered - Thanks

Well in the past I have covered a gig when in the UK for friends on the basis of the fact that they were stuck. I didn't say "hang on let me check the law first..."

I guess I would like the answer to all the possible situations...so I would know if the situations arose.

Sheesh! and they say Europe creates rules! http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/hide.gif

I've assumed that this meant "Personal listening".

And...I've sent the whole list RECORDED DELIVERY to PPL, including a covering letter, explaining that their answers to the various scenarios should help a great many DJ's.

I'll let you know the outcome as soon as I receive a reply.

Gary, I've been asked if you are going to provide a copy of your cover letter (on the forum) for the forum members who contributed to the scenario's ?
