brianmole 0
http://www.dancemix.co.uk/images/4841.jpg Thanks for all the suggestions, thanks to Leonna for popping in, good to meet you http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/smile.gif I started off doing current clubbby house as background really, then at 9pm I started the dancing with Roll Deep. The whole night contained NO CHEESE or POP http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/notworthy.gif http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/thumbup.gif which makes a real change for once. I played mainly RnB, hip-hop, old school, and a couple of DnB classics, together with a surprising selection of big house anthems. Biggest surprise request: Barthez - on the move http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/notworthy.gif Some of the other big house anthems (not urban) I got out in 1 mixed set (not in this order): Insomnia (Mike Finnegan mix) - Player One Sandstorm - Darude Cafe del Mar - Energy 52 D.E.V.I.L - 666 Operation Blade - Public Domain Born Slippy - Underworld Silence - Delirium I also played these which had a wicked reaction: Out of space - Prodigy Dr Pressure - MYLO vs MSM ft GE Now on to the Urban stuff I was asking about, this lot went down really REALLY well: My lumps - BEP (played twice) Lighters up - Lil' Kim It's like that - Mariah Carey It's like that - Rihanna Pon de replay - Rihanna We be burnin' - Sean Paul Grind with me - Pretty Ricky Rock ya body MC12.. - MVP Can I have it like that - Pharrell / Gwen Stephani Fire - Lethal Bizzle Gold digger - Kanye West & JF Nookie - Jamesey P You can do it - Ice Cube Tipsy - J-Kwon Dirty Harry - Gorillas Bootystition - Destiny's Child vs Stevie Wonder Can't Lick you outta my bed - Kylie vs Ludacris Window Shopper - 50 Cent Absolutely wicked night, loads of atmosphere, I came away really buzzing. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/smile.gif http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/thumbup.gif

ian 0
QUOTE (Leonna @ Nov 18 2005, 03:14 PM)I thought from Brian's requested he wanted something a bit less popish, which if it is in the charts it is, and something that would go down better in a 'club'. Without going down the hard core Brighton/Ibiza Club scene (Hip/Hop, Garage, Drum n Bass) I thought these might have been a 'gentler' introduction than some of the stuff they might get there. As someone who goes clubbing in Brighton a fair bit, none of those listed previous to mine would have got played in a serious Brighton 'club'. Even my suggestions would only have been likley to be played in Paradox or Event II as they are too commercial. Sorry Brian if I have been barking up the wrong tree. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/hide.gif Interesting - I sometimes think that we have different ideas of what we mean when we say the same things. Maybe it's location or different clubs or whatever. When I read the original post and saw words like "urban", "hip-hop" and "dancehall", I thought this was along the lines of some of the parties I play. So, I came up with some tunes which are working for me (which were also the ones Robbie picked, so I figured I couldn't be too far out). Now I've read your comments about Brighton clubs and seen Brian's photos, I realise that I was actually quite a way out. Looks like a very different crowd to the ones I'm used to. Having said that, looks like I'd have played most of the same tunes from Brian's "urban stuff" list. But I would never have played any of the stuff from the "big house" list. Instead, the other stuff I'd have played would have been more along the lines of Beenie Man, Sizzla, Mr Vegas, Elephant Man, some Usher, R. Kelly, Biggie, Snoop, Pitbull - that sort of thing. FrankieJ 0
My kind of night Brian, looks like they had a good night. Most of the above list is fairly commercial, Eminem has gone very commercial now which is a shame and looks like 50 could be heading that way too. Still would love to do a club night where you can play: NWA Ludacris Public Enemy K Solo Redman Epmd Jay Z Ice Cube Ice T Lil Kim Das Efx KRS One 2 Pac DMX Foxy Brown Nas MOP Wu Tang Biggie ... etc etc Now were a talking hardcore Rap Music....arrrr Heaven http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/notworthy.gif DJ Frankie Knuckles. ian 0
QUOTE (C.S @ Nov 21 2005, 12:42 PM)I definately wouldnt call rnb urban anymore, more mainstream if you ask me unless you mean real rnb ! When people say "urban music" they really mean "black music" but don't want to use that term either because they are worried about political correctness (if you are after a generous interpretation) or because they don't want to credit black people with having created such influential music (if you are being cynical). So I don't think it matters how mainstream RnB gets, it's still urban music! Politics rant over ... back to your scheduled discussion about music. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif
Leonna 0
What makes a song RnB, Hip/Hop, Garage, Trance, Jazz, Latin, Disco, Waltz etc? In the olden days was it not easier to 'class' music. I am not a musician so not sure, but it may have been to do with the beat of the music and maybe the style. I have no idea how to class most songs, my classes are I like it or I don't like it. It would be nice to know what sort of music you could expect when you see clubs saying funky soul or Hard House etc. Maybe it is just a sign of getting old http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/014.gif
brianmole 0
http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/071.gif As a 41 year old, I can understand what you are saying. For me, part of learning to mix has helped me id differing music types. Most of it is to do with the construction of the drum patterns and the tempo/BPM of the music. This is the sort of thing that the SEDA mixing workshops were covering, and I can happily go through the genres with you if you want to learn more. I can also recommend a 10 week course, 2 hours per week, every Tuesday or Wednesday at 7pm I think, in Guildford which is only £250, and possibly the best £250 I spent a few years ago. It is/was taught by the highly respected Mixdoctor - Les Adams (LA Mix, DMC, etc....) and you can find more info here - look for the DJ skills part time courses. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/thumbup.gif The latter goes into every aspect of DJing in good depth, well worth it.
