Well people - did the FOC gig on Friday night and my first paid gig on Saturday, and I have to say - they both went really well with no major hic-ups. The Friday night was a 50th birthday party with around 75 people - the only bad point was my laptop started to stutter after 5 hours so I had to lift it from the table. Went stright out the next morning and bought a cooler which did the trick on the Saturday night. Very little in the way of dancers, but the dancfloor had it's moments. First time I'd tried out my SKYTEC DUAL LED TWISTER which looked superb set up. I tried uploading some

Cheers for the messages people - hopefully all will be well. I'll report back on the whole weekend, plus a review (in the review section) of the new Dual LED lights I've bought.

:scared: Not exactly really - it's my first gig for people I don't know on the 25th April, so I'm a bit nervous. Luckily, I've got a 50th on the 24th to prepare me and settle the nerves. It's alomost likt the first day at school/work!

After long deliberation and research, I have gone for the DUAL LED TWISTER DISCO - which for an entry level DJ, at an entry level price seemed like the perfect buy. Anyone with any thoughts? I have two other 4 bulb sound activated lights to go with it.

I'm a project manager by trade - you can put as many contingency plans in place as you like, but something will always come and bite you on the bum. As long as you cover the most likely known eventualities then everything should be fine. As I've just started, all I have is back up music (on iPod), cables and fuses. I'll get there, but it's all about risk reduction for now - until I'm in a position to buy more equipment. Saying all that, I'd probably die if something went wrong - as I've not been through it before. You can only get better as you go through these sort of experienc

Thanks for that - it went very well. I only stayed with him for 1 hour but came away extremely confident of my own ability and set up. My lights leave a lot to be desired but I'm working on that - as I've said in another thread. I just can't wait to get started in earnest!

After reeading this thread and visiting Amazon MP3 department - it's Amazon all the way for me! Cheers people! You can't beat 29p for selected tunes! :toot:

The lighting I've seen (but not yet bought) is the LED Twister Disco Light, or LED Dual Twister Disco Light - both seem reasonably priced and would be a good starter for ten. Seen them on eBay, but I'm going to do some digging on other sites before I buy.

I'm being a 'roadie' tonight for a local DJ, are there any tips you guys can pass on? I was thinking more along the lines of do's and don'ts (sp?), what things should I be looking out for?

Good advice, thanks. I've had already bought the extra (better) cables - which don't make that much difference, like you said as my speakers are the Maplin standard ones. But I now have back up cables which is a must. I'm going to use my Alesis mixer and one output from the laptop, not decided which one yet. Back to the speakers, they do pack a punch and are really good for the level of DJ that I am - as I get further down the line I'll definately upgrade though. My next gig isn't until 24th April so plenty of time to get that extra lighting I've seen.
-
I am planning to continue using the laptop for future gigs - out of interest though, my Alesis MultiMix 8 USB mixer (obviously) has a USB input, but I'm not sure I can use it as a sound card to produce to outputs. I suppose I'm trying to be a traditionalist as well as using the laptop, and not spending too much (yet) on equipment. I like the idea of, and it feels more comfortable crossfading between tracks using Virtual DJ and my Numark M1 mixer - but I have had to buy a BerhingerUC202 as an additional sound out put, so two sound outputs - one the headphone and one the Berhinger. But,

Thanks for the advice - I have just bought some spare cables and the GLI from Maplins, and couldn't resist the 'on offer' lighting stand. My set up consists of the following..... Bog standard laptop (Gateway, 80GB HD, 1MB RAM, Pentium Dual Core) Alesis 4 Channel Mixer Prosound 800W Amp 2x Prosound 300W Passive Speakers I've got 2x 4 bulb sound activated lights (I've been advised that my lighting needs improving), which I know about, it's just a case of building it up. As I've said, I've only just started. Any advice you have would be great.

I've not posted on here for the best part of a year - so thought it best to re-introduce myself. I'm from Stockport and since my last introduction I have come on a little in the DJ'ing stakes! I've done 4 family parties and they've gone down really well. And I've managed to get a local DJ who's letting me sit in on one of his gigs on Saturday night - an excellent way to get into the business in my opinion. I'm in the market for some lighting now, as mine are pretty poor. It's a slow process, but I'm getting there - and have learned a lot from this forum over the past 11 months

I've got a laptop set up and have just had an offer by a DJ in my area to go along with him to see how he does it - happy days! But he heard my set up and advised me to get some more equipment - advice that I am going to take. But.......I need advice on where to buy the said equipment and hopefully one of you guys know a: what to get, and b: where to get it from! Firstly, I currently have bog standard 'Maplin' cables. 3.5mm jack to RCA, from laptop into my mixer (I have two mixers depending on whether I'm bedroom DJ'ing [Numark M1) or actually doing a gig [Alesis 4 channel]), then 6m

Somebody Please Suggest A Good, Cheap Usb Soundcard

Thanks for that gadget, I'm going to have a shop around. It must be able to work, I've seen laptops for sale with several outputs built in - so it can't be that difficult to plug one in and get two outputs. I'll definately look into the gigaport option though. Cheers again - I'll let you know if I'm successful. Just of interest, I notice you've set up with a laptop (from your avatar), how do you work it? Russ J
