Ass Spektra Range

On Saturday I had the first use of my new (secondhand) speakers. The speakers are ASS Spektra SP3, SP5 and SP9. The speaker specs are as follows:

 

SP3 - 12" + 1", 250w RMS, 100db/w/m

SP5 - 15" + 6.5" + 1", 400w RMS, 99db/w/m

SP9 - 18", 500w RMS, 99db/w/m

 

(Note that these are a good example of efficiency being more important than power! The SP3 have higher max spl than the SP5, despite having just over half the power handling).

 

They were set up with bins and tops and then the SP3 were side-fills along the edge of the dance floor. The amps were a Matrix XP2000 running the bins and a Matrix XP1500 running the tops and side-fills. I was planning on running the side-fills with my Matrix UKP1300, but ran out of time setting them up. A dbx223XL crossover was used, crossing at about 100hz.

 

Basically, the whole set-up sounded absolutely stunning. The bass could have been better, but that was due to speaker placement, rather than the speakers themselves.

 

The mid/top was incredible. It was nightclub loud throughout the room we were playing in, which was big enough to seat 500 for dinner. However, it is easy to make something loud; the speakers had great definition and absolutely perfect sound.

 

The best thing was, was that it was this loud with my amps playing at slightly more than half power. There is more in the speakers and more in the amps.

 

I can thoroughly recommend them to anybody and, if anybody is interested, point you in the direction of getting some. tongue out icon

[/b]I LOVE ASS! Accoustic Sound Systems ROCK! I know the same as you how these kick "ass" ha ha ha No pun intended! However the weight! OUCH!!! :hurt: But good sound comes at more than one price, weight!

 

Good to see another mobile DJ who uses ASS. I now use a similar wooden cabinet system, but more compact.

I agree completely,they have produced some of the best sounding boxes.

I can lift the SP5s by myself and I can just about put my SP3s on the stands if I get my balance right, but the SP9s are very very heavy.

 

However, they are wonderful speakers. I have compared my SP3s to some Mackie SRM450s and the SP3s blow them away. I was a bit disappointed at first with the bass response compared to the Mackies but then saw how eq was set for the Mackie system - pure mobile DJ "smiley face" whilst mine was flat.

 

My only problem is that my SP9s are 500w RMS each and my 750w per side amp didn't get the best out of them. I need a good 1kw/side amp. However, I am planning (when funds allow) to get myself another pair of SP9s. That'll mean three trips in the car to get all my gear there! I had a night in my residency where I had just the SP9s and the SP3s and the receptionist came down (a five minute walk to my room) and asked me to turn the bass down because guests on the other side of the hotel were being disturbed! Worth the set-up weight just for that moment!

Ahh that's where you'll have trouble as they're not made anymore. SSE in Redditch have some (including the Refleckta range from The Astoria) GS Sound Systems (or something like that; in the midlands and on ebay) occasionally have some and there is a place in Peckham that has some and I have the number for them.

I say this as an ex A.S.S! (lol) If you get the chance to buy some, have the man power to move them around (hence I now own a more compact system!) GET THEM! You will love all their speakers.

 

I thought A.S.S had stopped trading as I heard something about Tony (Director A.S.S) had stopped trading. Is this true?

 

If so I really hope people look after their A.S.S gear because as Richard has said and I can vouch A.S.S speaker are really something else that most big brand names simply cannot match!

 

Richard where are you based? Would love to come and have a listen to your SP range if thats ok? Would be good to hear a pair of A.S.S again:0)
