  1. You should have dropped by and said hello. Not often anyone (if anyone at all) from DJU comes here (barr me of course) and probably the first time someone from DJU who is not me has mentioned the town.

What were you up to around here?

I have some longleat gigs every now and again. Also there's the occasional pilgramige to Frome.

  2.

Gary, isn't there a limit of 1000 tracks per folder, therefore actually you would have to break the root folder into 5 or more folders ?

There aren't any "number of files per folder" limits for Temporary Database, although well done to you for remembering about the 1000 per individual folder quantity when loading into/via Music Manager.

The only limit as such, when creating a temporary database would be the massive 50,000 files max, per drive.

  3. Because HDC's don't read NTFS formatted drives smile icon

Exactly. FAT32 is fine. Does what it needs to do for audio files, and is more cost effective for the end user too. The "permissions" for FAT32 to write information to a storage device (eg: A disc drive) are effectively public domain (free of charge to incorporate on a product).

The DN-HD2500 needs to be able to write to disc drives for when users wish to store their Memo Points about their tracks - eg: Cue Point, Hot Start Points, Seamless Loop points and so on, so that these points can all be recalled/loaded back from the drive, with the track next time you load the track (optional). The DN-HD2500, and the DN-S5500 will handle up to four external drives of upto 1TB (1000 gb) each in FAT32 format, with upto 50,000 tracks and 1000 playlists per drive.

  4. How does the Denon handle (say) 5,000 untagged tracks placed on the root of the drive?

Is this a possibility with this machine, and if so, how difficult would it be to search through them?

How does the Denon handle them? Very well of course ! Apart from Sophie Ellis-Bexter...

If you throw a file, or indeed upto 50,000 files (per drive...and it'll handle 4 + the internal)...with no tags, you can choose the option to "Create Temporary Database" - This takes a few minutes when you create it, and it looks at the filename of each track and works out the artist name and songtitle from that, using the hyphen "-" as the break between artist name and song title.

You can then search your music files by Artist, or song title.

So... a file called "The Wurzels-Ive got a brand new combine harvester" would be searchable by artist or song title.

The only problem that I've had with this is when the artist name is hyphenated in the filename - in which case you'd have an Artist called "Sophie Ellis" singing that well-known ditty "Bexter-murder on the dancefloor". not too bad, I surpose, and easily fixed by changing the hyphen in the artist name to an asterix or something similar...in fact anything other than a hyphen - and theres not too many hyphenated names around.

  5. Thats pretty serious. Mainly because one of the things that most people agree upon with Windows driven playback, is that the less software that you have installed, and the less background processes you have running, the better.

This could mean that installing a virus killer, and leaving it to run and do its thing as a background process to protect the Windows device from virus's (or should that be Viri' ?) such as this, would be a choice that would go against the mainsteam advice of just having the "DJ" software installed and running.

I suppose one solution, or work-around would be to have all the MP3's on an external drive (with no other applications installed/running etc) and just regularly point a virus killer at that specific drive, once a week for example.

  6. This might sound strange but...

have tried playing say a one hour playlist or block of continuous music and timed the skips...

    eg:

    10:00am - start music

    10.04am - skip

    10:08am - skip

    10:12am - skip... etc,etc,etc

This spacing could suggest something within the laptop settings is "happening" every 4 minutes - even some powered hubs go through a "stock check" of whats plugged into all their ports every X or xx minutes, causing either lock-ups or other wierd, but often repetitively timable (I bet that word doesent exist) glitches whene they cycle/poll their ports.

Also, where is you music library stored ? External hard drive...? if so... is it powered from a proper mains supply, or trying to run from the measely power of the USB port/lead itself? USB only gives 500milliamps, but some drives try to pull 750milliamps or over, during certain tasks - when the drive cant get the power (cap'n), ususual things can happen.

If external drive, does it have any "built-in" functions eg: "Single Push-Button Backup?" which might be getting in the way of smooth operation?

Also, when you do your timings, make sure that first time round, the music is playing a ZERO pitch - not speeded up, or slowed down.

Then re-run the test, with the on-screen player(s) pitched up to max...eg +100% or +50% however high it will go,and time the skips again. Do they differ (from the 0% timings)? to they stay the same?

Also, do you have anything else that's USB plugged in.... anything at all....mobile phone charger lead, digital camera, Media card reader?, pen drives? USB Gooseneck light? USB cooling fan?

  7. The good news is that you dont need to worry about folders. The Denon DN-HD2500 does have a good folder search system, but it's got a far better, "less waste" method.

When you've got all your tunes tagged (ID3 tags for Artist Name, Song Title, Year, Genre, Track number, album name etc) on your external hard drive, simply choose the "Create Full Database" option. This is create (surprise surprise) a full database of all your tracks on your harddrive. Its thanks to this database that the Denon DN-HD2500 is able to perform absolutely "instant" search results on both 1-step and 2-step searches (1-step is where you ask for all results that match one criteria eg: All songs by Elvis..... whereas 2-step search is where you ask to see only the tracks which meet BOTH of two criteria eg: Songs by Elvis, but only those who's BPM is around 140 BPM, or....all the tracks of a "Trance" genre, but only from 1994.

The creation of the database only has to be done once, but can take around 10 minutes to complete...so dont start it off 2 minutes before the show starts...

There's no provision for Key information in the searchable tags, however, you could add them to the end of the song titles, in brackets perhaps, then use the Denons String Search feature to look for titles with (E7) or (C7) etc, in them.... using 2-step search to give you the search ability to search for "House" tracks with (E7) in the title... etc.

A couple of quick notes on the hard drive that you're using, before you start transfering.

    1) Make sure that it has its own external power supply that plugs straight into the wall - don't use a drive which tries to power itself from a USB Port. A USB port only gives out 500milliamps and the bigger capacity drives need 600-750milliamps to perform satisfactorily.

    2) The drive must be formated to FAT32 format. If the drive is bought formatted to NTFS, you can use the FORMAT option in the Utility Menu on the front panel of the DN-HD2500 to format the drive to FAT32 - best do this first, before any data transfer takes place, as of course, formating a drive deletes all the data.

    Enjoy.

  8.

    Oi!!!!!

    Biker here!!! Grrrrr

Dual Carriageways are actually 3 lanes for us... ;-)

Quite Right - it says on your driving license "Tear along dotted line..."

You are, therefore, merely following instructions...... WEEEEEEEERRRRROOOOOWWWWWW...... ("where's my wing mirror gone...")

On a serious note - I'd be willing to travel up to south Birmingham for a meet, but probably not much further.

I enjoyed attending RobbieDJ's meet up in London earlier this year, and would make an effort to go to any more.

I attended that one too. Overall, it would depend on the date, times, location and overall interest,

  9.

there are elements of the licence which DJs have identified as questionable and do not have answers too.

    //

You your self and a few others (in the short space of time since the initial news was released leading up to the 1st July 'launch') contacted the MCPS with questions.

I believe you received satisfactory answers to your questions.

    //

Being fair, there are other DJs who do not have their answers

    //

Dan, I would agree that there are some members with valid questions, which once answered will enable that person (in nearly all cases) to move from "Pause" and onto the next step which may well be "Buy the license" either to cover themselves for the tunes which they are about to rip, or retrospectively cover themselves for a hard drive full of their CDs which they may have ripped years ago - it's my understand that MCPS-PRS ("Produb") will apply a certain common-sense Amnesty over already ripped xx,xxx tracks, as long as the appropriately sized ProDub license is purchased.

However, I also see/hear/read some comments which are simply false objections, deliberate stalling tactics, reason after rant, and rant after mythical loophole revelation - anything at all to distance themselves and their hard drives of home rips from the license - why? well, some seem to ask (eventually) "we've been ripping stuff and playing it out for years now, why start paying to transfer it now?" - some will simply ask the same questions repeatedly, get given the correct answers over and over and over again but will have their e-fingers, in their e-ears, singing "I cant hear you dah dah dahdah dah.", simply to keep themselves on "Pause", and in some cases will try and instil that lethagy onto others. Much along the lines of "PPsssst....if you get pulled over, jus' tell'em that you didn't know anythink 'bout tyres 'aving' to 'ave tread on'em".

The MCPS have joined the forum but have so far declined to introduce themselves / participate in threads.

It's early days of coursel and maybe they are just busy at the moment, but I still think it would be a great help if they could at least answer and address remaining concerns of our forum members before the DJ Show North event.

I think that we need to make a distriction between "declined" which suggests active avoidance, although there's been no hint of that.

ProDub have indeed been visiting a number of forums and have been posting on quite a few of them - why not every single forum? Well here's something which I heard directly from the person at MCPS-PRS who actually did the signing up on some of the forums - and its a phrase which myself as a former moderator here, and I'm sure yourself Dan, and the other co-admins, super-mods,mods etc will whole-heartedly relate to. MCPS-PRS do not get paid for their time on the forums (see...I said that it would sound familiar...) they do not have time allocated in their days to specifically sit on the forums (again, all so familiar).

I cant blame MCPS-PRS for avoiding posting on some other forums where one or two abrasive individuals with no valid questions, would just try to twist and mis-quote any valid information which was posted. These little e-warriors generally make a big noise online but would take a far more respectable persona the moment they let go of their mouse.

Here below is an example of text which I've found very quickly and very easily duing my sweeps of other forums. Incidently this isnt a direct cut'n'paste from any one forum in particular, but the info is the same, I typed it in manually here (not a link or direct cut/paste)

    "Hello

Please call the ProDub Licensing team on 0208 378 7500. They will be able to answer your questions. There is also an extensive FAQ section at www.produb.co.uk You can also send an email directly to info@produb.co.uk If you fancy a face-to-face chat, ProDub will be represented at DJ Show North in Leeds. All the best The ProDub Team"

One of the posts which I found on a forum, which covered more or less the same details was posted on a SUNDAY... not exactly a "normal" Monday to Friday. The guys at MCPS-PRS genuinely want to get your questions answered. I've spoken to them possibly more than 15 times in the last 4 weeks, and no, not just to go over the finer details of the Denon DH-HD2500 which they are offering as the prize in their free-to-enter prize draw on the Pro-Dub Website.

I wanted answers to certain aspects of the Pro-Dub license before I puchased my Produb license - Only when I got those answers to my questions; my concerns did I then prepare myself to spend £400, on the 20,000 audio only tracks license - I was of course delighted to find out that it only cost me £300 thanks to the 25% discount thats currently being offered for the next 3 weeks.

So above, there are no less than three 100%, straight from the horses mouth, great contact methods all offering help and assistance to anyone who actually wants to ask a question and/or seek information, I've even read somewhere about posts suggesting that next year the license will be 8 million quid etc. haha did the poster keep the receipt for that crystal ball? Theres be no evidence which I've seen (and I have been following this very closely from a number of angles, for some time), to keep that notion afloat for even a moment.

Please, please, please - anyone, if you've got a question about the ProDub license....if you're sitting there ripping NOW 70 (ok, I know I';m a few days early on that) thinking "Hmmmm I wish I felt more legal doing this - I'd buy the Pro-dub license if I only knew for sure that it covered x,y,z", "Oh, I wonder how the Pro-Dub deals with backups on x,y, or z", please just drop them an email, or give them a call on the numbers/details above or pop up (or down - if you're that way geographically located).and see them at either DJ Show North, or BPM show.

On that point, there's been a post about how "poorly" the questions are going to get answered at those forthcoming shows...definately take that crystal ball back... but tell me the lottery numbers for the weekends of DJ Show North Weekend and BPM weekend first please...on second thoughts, that crystal ball isnt working right, so dont worry - Now that the license is full up and running, and PPL have finally come back with their (which were still unconfirmed when some people tried to call MCPS-PRS a day or two before the July launch, the guys at MCPS-PRS are able to give far more succinct answers to questions.

Also, the number sold so far is very encouraging, considering that it's only 2 weeks into the license, and its likely that the take-up will snowball as the advertising gets around as much as the word of mouth (and possibly in at least one other way...more on that in due course).

Got questions? Call MCPS-PRS or Email them using the details above.

  10. I would suggest having it half-way up Clay Hill. (Just outside Warminster)

However, as I discovered last week, the dual carraigeways around that area are still used by bikers and madly-coloured car drivers (the cars are madly coloured, I dont mean the drivers) as some sort of long straight(ish) race track by the local Halfords Gift Voucher Brigade... so that's not such a good idea.

Plus, the access up Clay Hill is dreadful for lugging the gear...

It's a little concerning, although not perhaps unexpected, that the two leading votes for "location" are diagonal opposites of the country. eg: North West and South East.

It would be great, I think, if the (so far) 3 people who voted, that they'd rather not got, could mention why not - maybe there's something which the suggestions for content/attractions at such an event havent covered yet, which, if added to the event would entice some of the "no"s and also the "not too sure"s

  11. at least now that the pro dub licence is available anyone who rips music as part of their profession now has a method of finally doing that legitimately, and by the rules.

I welcomed the licence as I feel that things have been "legally grey" in the respect of ripping cd's, vinyls, minidiscs, tapes etc since, well since the Record button got invented.

there's a 25% discount on the Pro-dub license up until the 2nd week of August. That 25% discount could mean over £100 savings off the normal licence fee - and remember, it's only a one-off fee for the tracks you transfer, as the license covers you for the format shift of tracks and you won't normally be format shifting the same tracks more than once.

  12. Hmmmm, or perhaps I should say HUUUMMMM

Audio quality isn't a natural in-built feature for some lappys, but if ALL the audio problems go away when you run the laptop off if it's battery then you may be able to solve your recording woes for between £15 to £25.

Devices called Audio Isolators or sometimes, Ground loop isolators should rid your laptop of this particular, and relatively common problem.

The same devices are often used inbetween Ford Escorts and Car stereos so you should find these in Halfords and Maplins etc.

Don't worry, these units are a simple plug in design which attach to the audio cables.

  13. Good interview

Number 8: Sounds like there's a whole great story to follow behind that one, go on Rev, do tell.

Number 19:  That's happens quite a few times, usually when the amount of alcohol inside the person, equates to more than the amount of alcohol in their glass The parallel occurence is when they request a track, you play it say, 20 minutes later, then a few minutes after you've played it they (come back in and) say "dont forget to play my request for...nnnnn will you..."

    .

  14. Friday, a hospital appointment in the afternoon, so hopefully they're running on-time as it's followed by a joint 30th/40th birthday party that evening.

Saturday, wedding party - well, unfortunately its one of those "Post-wedding parties" - they got married a month ago abroard, and are now having the friends and extended family around for the UK gathering.

Sunday - drive home from the above, spend a couple of hours at home, then its off to nice sunny (fingers crossed) Maidstone, Kent for the 3rd SEDA (South Eastern DJ Association) Show Night this year - always a good night, lots of face-to-face contact, networking, and hands-on. (although hopefully she wont slap me so hard this time ). Its a good venue, although its one of those strange places that the post code for letters, isn't actually the best post code to point your Sat Nav at...and I can never remember the postcode for the Sat Nav.

  15. I dont recall ever seeing a Madonna track on a Now album.

However, I suspect that the reasons for tracks from particular artists not appearing on a popular compilation album are more likely to be down to which record label an artist is signed with, not wanting to contribute to the success of the label who produces the Now albums. Much in the same way that you wouldn't see a poster for a Big Mac on the front doors of Burgerking.

Also, I would imagine that record labels would rather their artist tracks got purchased as a chart-logged CD-single, or single download, contributing toward the artists chart success, rather than just getting a less visible inclusion on the latest "Now". Once someones got that latest track by their fav artist on a compilation album, they are far less likely to then go out and still buy the artists CD-single etc.

  16.

    • DRM (or Digital Rights Management) is a collection of restrictions which are embedded in a music file (or sometimes stored in a tiny associated file which downloads "behind the scenes" with each DRM'd music file that you download from various legitimate sources - eg: most of the 79p per track sites.

The DRM restrictions tycically tell your playback software (for example, little old Windows Media Prayer) what it can, and cant allow you to do. For example, a legit download website might agree that unless otherwise specified you, the user, can listen to a track 1000 times, or perhaps play it an unlimited number of time up until a certain date, can burn the track 3 times onto a CDR, and can sync the file maybe 5 times with a portable device eg: An iPod/MP3 player etc.

Some DRM restrictions can also stipulate that you can do any/all of the above ONLY whilst you remain a member of their monthly subscription service...as customers of Virgin Stores Digital Download service abrubtly found out a few months ago - when Virgin pulled out of that particular market activity and their (then ex-) users could no longer listen to their Virgin DRM'd tracks.

More recently, some legit download services are now offering "DRM Free" files. Theres an interesting twist (not in fact a negative twist) to some, if not all, of these "DRM Free" files. They still have DRM properties embedded into the music file header BUT these are the Account details of the user who originally downloaded the file, rather than any playback restrictions. So really, these should be called "DRM Free-of-anything-that-will-stop-you-from-playing-or-burning-or-syncing-this-music-track" files. Some users have said that they've been able to locate their download account/membership number in the data header of downloaded "DRM-Free" downloaded music tracks.

Identity embedding is a great way of deterring those who previously might have downloaded some tunes from legit music services then tried to illegally share them on Peer-to-Peer and other dodgy file sharing services. Its also a great way for those DJs, fitness instructors and other professional music users being able to prove which tracks they themselves have downloaded directly, rather than format-shifted, as their downloaded files will have their download account identity embedded in them, whereas their format shifted tracks wont.

    • As Marc said, you'll need to rip the tracks individually, then play them back on "Continuous" setting, so that playback doesnt stop at the end of each track, which is how you'd normally want tracks to behave.

For ripping, have you tried "Audiograbber"? I find it easier to use than many, and it has a couple of big advantages:

      1) If you've got multiple CD Drives on your PC, you can run multiple copies of Audiograbber - which means that you can rip several CDs at once. I can rip both discs of a NOW album in about 1 minute 10seconds.

      2) Audiograbber even adds all the tags (Artist, Title, Album, track number etc..) to CD quality WAV files, not just compressed MP3s.

      3) Audiograbber uses the LAME encoder, which is pretty popular and well known as a very high quality "behind the scenes" bit of software/subroutine.

    • I opt'd for "Both".

There's lno point in DJing if it's not entertaining - although some members of the audience, and DJs for that matter) will have different ideas about what is entertaining. I think this part of the role is where the DJs vocal abilities (both on and off the mic) come in, and I dont mean karaoke skills.

For some audiences for example, just having the DJ coming out from the his/her "goalmouth" area and having a bit off banter (no mic - just "one to one") with various guests as the DJ visits the tables asking for any completed request slips makes that DJ more "favourably memorable" than the "bowtied goalie". If the DJ smiles and exchanges pleasantries and a few think-on-your-feet quips, so much the better.

Similarly, leaving the "goalmouth" and sipmly being "out there" during non-musical centred parts of the evening such as presentations, speeches (once you're happy the guest/speaker is mic-savvy) raffles etc is great too.

    • my friend is selling a set of denon dns 3000 and a mixer for £280.00 . is this a good price

Its a good price for two of the DN-S3000's - they've got some good features on them. You didn't mention what make and model the mixer was, but as long as it works... Whether or not the whole set-up is right for you will depend on what you're looking at doing with them, what sort of music you'll be playing etc. As the 3000's have a motorized platter, they give a true vinyl DJ type feel - you can even attach a real 7inch record of your choice to the plattters for total vinyl feel - that is of course IF you can find anywhere that's still selling vinyl...

You can even get 3 different colours of faceplates for the 3000's so you can have them Gold, Silver or Metallic Blue to match your mixer, flightcase, bedroom, lighting rig etc.

    • .. Perhaps I'm just getting old, and its the same effect as "Wagon Wheels being bigger when I was a lad..."

It could be the Wagon Wheel effect, I guess ... just like "are there less butterflies nowadays, or are we just too busy to notice them anymore?".

Rats! You made me want to go out and buy a Wagon Wheel now...

With Radio 1 playing re-releases so often, its amazing there isn't more call for bang up to date stuff by the public.

I wonder if the re-plays of the older tracks on the radio as well as older tunes being used in current TV ads etc, lead the publics music choices in some cases eg: "I got reminded of that old track earlier today, I wouldnt mind dancing to it now"...rather than "I've heard nothing but old stuff all day/week, play me something I've never heard of...thud thud thud thud th...cheers..."

Gary, Will you be getting it?

It depends what mood the Mrs is in .... OH, you meant Now 70... (didn't you?) Yes, I'll be getting it - I dont tend to shop around all that much - nor buy the CD on-line from a Jersey/US tax haven etc - I might surf the websites of the 4 major supermarkets to ascertain who's selling it for £9.97, rather than £14.99 etc then go out and buy it when I'm in that supermarket within the next few days.

I would like to see a more frequent release schedule, perhaps with CD2 being with brand new artists which would help new artists get more mainstream exposure.

I think that if they (NOW / Emi/virgin etc) launched more frequenty, they'd have to change the format, as you say, maybe CD2 should be something else other than the "fairly well known" as it currently is. The other option is that they drop the Now albums to a single CD every month or two, but I think that would wreck their "winning formula". Winning? Well, ok, we're having a grumble about it not being frequent or up to date enough, but as its out lasted all the other contenders in the long-running double compilation CD marketplace, so "Now" has got to be doing something right, maybe not for the fraction of a percent of DJs, but for the mass market public purchasers.

I used to collect the "Hits" compilation albums too, but they seemed to fall by the wayside, compared to the Now series (and spin-offs).

    • I was asked to provide Karaoke at a wedding where I was the DJ at a few years ago, and charged extra for the karaoke accordingly.

On the day of the wedding, the B&G advised me that based on comments and concerns that they'd got from their families on the day when the B&G had mentioned that it was going to be karaoke later. Apparently, according to the B&G, the key concern was that neither of the families wanted to look daft in front of the other. Fair comment on such a big day, and of course he who pays the piper calls the tune (but not the instrumental dub in this case).

    • Welcome to DJU.

I dont do agents any more, not for the last couple of decades at least - however, I did start off my DJing career via an agent who was a dj himself, or rather, he was a DJ who then also became an agent - It was a good combination as he (Jim) knew (as a DJ) what information the DJs he was sending out would need to know eg: Access details, bride & grooms names and music preferences, venue issues such as noise limiters etc.

Jim was not only a DJ and an agent, he was an exceptional mentor to many of the DJs "on his books". I bumped into him at the NADJ show a couple of months ago, but it was so busy, I didn't get anywhere near enough time to chat. If you can find an agent like that in your area, go for it.

When I went solo, I gave the agency more notice than they actually required, out of courtesy and adhered closely and fully to their terms about DJs leaving the agency could not work "directly" for any of the venues which that DJ had worked at via the agency within 12 months of leaving etc.
