Hi.

Bought some of these powered speakers on saturday, worked fine saturday, sunday, today one of them popped and they are both making a very loud humming noise whether plugged into an audio source or not.

I have two Technics 1210s, one Ecler mixer and the speakers. I also have my laptop plugged into the speakers so I can listen to internet radio stations.

Was listeneing to a staion tonight and this happened. Totally gutted.

Whats wrong? Have I blown them up. Only had them two days can I take them back as faulty?

Pleas advise.

LINK CORRECTED!!

Sorry that link should be POWERED SPEAKERS

No idea, my crystal ball is faulty again smile icon how hard have they been 'pushed'.

if you a reasonably confident that you haven't abused them beyond their intended application then send them back under warranty smile icon

They havent been pushed at all I was listening to some music whilst I washed up in the next room, and its open plan so no need to be loud.

So annoyed. By "whats wrong" I guess I meant, what causes a loud humming noise when they are plugged in? I'm not good with speaker hardware so dont understand whats causing it.

Probably some loose wire somewhere causing the humming, but whatever is wrong with them, send them back! Two days' use and they're already broke?!? Send them back and make sure you don't pay for anything!

I have seen loads of these speakers, in Black, white & silver. They get very hot. They appear on pallets of customer returns all the time, usually gone DC on the outputs, which from the sound you describe could be what is wrong. Sorry to have to tell you, but they are pants. Choose something else.

Well, I took them back and got them swapped for a new pair. They were OK for what they were and for £40 I thought it was a steal, I wont be pushing them really hard, these are just for home use, I have a dughter so they'l never get cranked up. I think they'll be OK for me, but may ask for your advice next time I want some speaker.

One more question: What does "Gone DC on the outputs" mean? Can you explain? I feel stupid but am not the most confident person when it comes to electronics/speaker hardware and am curious to know what happened to them

Thank you.

Music signal is an alternating current (AC) which goes up and down, and when amplified causes the speaker cone to move in and out.

When an amplifier 'goes DC' it means that it is putting out direct current which causes the speaker to only move 1 way, and generally cooks the voice coil on the speaker driver (the coil of wires that runs inside the magnet gap and makes it an electro magnet)

DC is considered 'bad' and decent amps will have DC protection to cut outputs if its detected. Thats why a lot of amps are not rated for very, very low frequencies as the DC circuits detect the long pulses as DC and shut them down.

Thanks for that, I'm guessing thats exactly what happened. I only noticed the "get something else they are pants" post after I got back with the replacements but they seem OK.

Thanks Norty. Beat me to it with that.

Watch those speakers, they do get very hot (feel the plate on the back of the one with the amp in!!) once they have been on for a while as the components are basically running virtually flat out on the power supply and amp stages.

I really would advise somthing better, I know they are only cheap but I wouldn't even recommend them for computer speakers.

Do mixers have DC protection? Mine is a Ecler NUO2. Would that be protected against DC audio if something goes wrong? Cant find anything about it anywhere. Just a passing thought.
