The DJU Interview with leading female D.J (Another pint on the slate!) and forum agony aunt Karen (Kazzachi)

How long have you been DJ'ing?

About thirteen years!

What inspired you to become a DJ?

I think it was more "desperation" rather than "inspiration"! I had left my first husband - leaving him the house and all my wordly goods - and was as poor as a church mouse! I knew I had to do something if I was going to be able to feed and keep a roof over my daughters head so a good friend of mine (who also happened to have just left her hubby albeit she kept the house and contents!) had a head to head about what we could do to earn a few pennies. Her brother had just bought a really naff second hand disco system and we decided to approach him to see if he would let us borrow his gear as we decided that we could do "disco parties" for children! The rest as they say, is history!

What type of "Do" was your first gig?

A childrens party for a group of ten year olds! What a way to start - great being an amateur!

How much did you charge (Mikeee please convert this from Shilings and pence to decimal when its your go..)

For childrens parties I charge £150 for a 2 hour set and prices for adult functions start at £250 til twelve and fifty pound per hour or part thereof thereafter.

What equipment did you have to begin with?

My first purchase was a citronic Hawaii IV deck, formula 400 amp, clubman 15 speakers, two light screens (that'll please spin), a set of 4x4 traffic lights, two abstract twisters and wait for it..... a rope light!!

Whats the worst/most embarassing thing you've done in front of an audience?

Due to the fact that we have some minors on this forum I better not tell you the first worst/embarrassing thing... but I think the worst thing I ever did (apart from the first worst thing!) is to accept glass after glass of champagne during a gig and fall into my record boxes - I hasten to add that this was when I first started out and make a point in NOT drinking at any function!

What is your favourite type of function now? EG: Wedding, 18th Birthday party, funeral wake..

I still love kids parties - you realise how great they are when you are walking down the aisles in tescos and kids come running up screaming your name and giving you a big cuddle! Apart from that I dont have any favourite TYPE of gig - I love doing virtually all of them - the day I dont enjoy them is the day I quit!

Is there anything that you include in your show now, that you wish you'd done/known when you started? (Not equipment, but in human/performer terms)

Experience!

What do you feel you offer your public, that makes you a better DJ than "the next guy/girl"?

I would not say that any professional DJ is better than the next - we all tend to play the same stuff and have the same attitude but for my part, I always make sure that I give it 110% and NEVER give up trying. I may have a couple of assets that make me stand out from the rest but I think that is a woman kinda thing!

Have you ever bought something for your show that you wish you hadnt? and why?

YES! I bought a smoke machine off a bloke for £50 and showed it off to an owner of a disco shop who promtly took it off me saying that it had been nicked from his shop! Whoops - I wont do that again!

Whats your next DJ purchase likely to be?

A moving display as long as Crispy can give me a good discount!

If you could get someone to invent a new piece of disco equipment for your show, what would it be?

Probably something that would set itself up and pack itself down!

What do you think is the best thing about DJ'ing.

Proving people wrong - I still get sniggers and little comments from people at the beginning of a gig who reckon I am just a novelty - and I love to prove them wrong!

What do you think is the worst thing about DJ'ing.

Having no social life at the weekend!

What would make you stop DJ'ing (if anything).

When I start hating going out and stop enjoying it.

How do you think DJ'ing will change, in the next 5 years?

Apart from technical advances, I dont think that DJing will change dramatically. A good DJ is vital and no amount of equipment or effects will replace him/her

Why, its not stopped you previously in the Chat! and besides the minors on here are worse than the adults! http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/rolleyes.gif - Feel free to describe the party trick with coins again! http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/tongue.gif

And good luck to you!, I haven't got the patience with the little brats anymore...must be entering my misreble bad tempered old man phase. I Just wish you were close enough to pass on the enquries I still get, the one thing we are short of around here is a decent D.J for kids parties

I'm not knocking Karens skill as a D.J or in fact D.J's of either sex, but I think that female D.J's have a more "safer" attitude towards them when it comes to parents booking their childrens entertainment If that happened to a Male D.J in Tescos no doubt he'd be arrested!.

And don't woman just love to prove people wrong!!!! http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/smile.gif - Don't worry Karen, we don't think that you are a novelty on this forum....Focal point maybe, but not a novelty!.

Good on ya Karen, now I see why you are the agony aunt as well http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif

You've also confirmed a theory of mine that 'Tescos' gets a mention almost everywhere (most news stories about products seem to be in their stores and most sitcoms & dramas that require a shopping trip end up there). Soon they will control everything - you have been warned!!

Who's next then?
