Hello Chris

I know you have been a Dj now for many years and would love to know how it all begain. I hope you dont think im being nosey it would be nice to see how you started as I regularly log on to your website/forum I notice you dont have a history page.

Yeah I think your being nosey http://www.chrispointon.f2s.com/Forum/html/emoticons/363.gif - So you want to know about my murky past hmmm?...Okay, what the hell......

I became interested in D.J'ing when I was 12, however it took me until I was 14 to actually get somebody to take my ambition seriously, which is why I now spend a lot of time advising and helping others who are just starting out - I remember how hard it was to get established, even more so when you are still young, I mean who wants to trust a teenager in charge of your Wedding Reception Entertainment http://www.chrispointon.f2s.com/Forum/html/emoticons/533.gif

Luckily, I found another local D.J who was willing to let me help out at weekends, so I could learn from him, how to D.J and what was involved. I got more and more interested and trained with him for about a year. On my 15th Birthday, my parents bought me my first disco set up (Fal Decks, 50 Watt Amp, 3 Channel Fal Light Columns!) I also made two light boxes at School as a technology project and in doing so, found another interest - Electronics! ( I only got a "E" for the woodwork but an "A" for the Electronics! - Sadly my D.I.Y and woodwork skills haven't improved with time! http://www.chrispointon.f2s.com/Forum/html/emoticons/rolleyes.gif ). I teamed up with a friend at school and in April 1988 - "The Ultimate Roadshow" was born!.

We started off doing the usual - Kids & School Disco's, eventually we found a resident at a local hotel, and in 1990 we started working for G.O Entertainments (Gandey's Circus) - Who have their head office here in Congleton and although we only worked for them for 12 months our reputation grew and the work poured in, and this was really the start of the business.

In 1990, my original "Roadie" moved out of the area and was replaced by Richard who still helps me today and who has virtually taken over the day to day running of the Roadshow side of the business, whilst I do a residency at a Staffordshire nightclub and run the hire side and, of course, CSL. We've also have several other part time "Roadies" who help out, and the occasional "trainee" http://www.chrispointon.f2s.com/Forum/html/emoticons/tongue.gif

CSL was originally started as a hobby which just grew. I always remember the break that was offered to me when I was just starting out, and over the years, I have trained up many D.J's, and I was surprised at just how much they were being charged to buy Equipment when they eventually started up on their own.

When I left school I started working in the Electronics Industry, and over the years I've worked as a Service Technician, Electronic ATE Tester and Buyer - all of which have been useful for this industry!. Over the years I made more and more contacts, and started doing equipment repairs for other D.J's. Eventually I also started selling them new equipment (Far Cheaper than the local shop!). I'm very close to the Peak District in Derbyshire (Where there are few disco shops) and also found myself getting telephone calls to travel and repair their equipment. The business just grew from there, so I can't say exactly when the business started - it just did!.

In 1999, I opened a retail shop in Congleton and the name "Congleton Sound & Lighting" was chosen, however the combination of a crooked landlord and expensive business rates soon made me reconsider this idea http://www.chrispointon.f2s.com/Forum/html/emoticons/wacko.gif . I discovered the internet, did an Evening course in computers and business studies. I sold more equipment on QXL than I ever had from the shop, I built a website, started selling on E-bay and the business just kept growing.

I added a hire service for local customers and built storage space, workshop and office space on some property I owned. The mail order side was introduced last year and by keeping our overheads low and being mail order we can undercut the high street shops. Having such a fast turnover of goods gives us more negotiating power with our suppliers which means lower prices for you http://www.chrispointon.f2s.com/Forum/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Starting and running ANY business takes a lot of effort and takes up your spare time http://www.chrispointon.f2s.com/Forum/html/emoticons/014.gif . I do have help from my Stepfather (who owns 20% of the business) and the disco and bookings side is really managed by Richard http://www.chrispointon.f2s.com/Forum/html/emoticons/tongue.gif , even so, I still work around 18 hours a day - 7 days a week!. but I suppose that I can say that I really do enjoy the work!.

Sorry it's gone on so long....but YOU did ask! http://www.chrispointon.f2s.com/Forum/html/emoticons/sterb188.gif

Now, aren't you going to ask me for my choice of 3 songs? http://www.chrispointon.f2s.com/Forum/html/emoticons/221.gif

I wouldn't exactly call it an empire, and I only mentioned the Glamourous bits and forgot to mention the loss of social life and the break up of several relationships because of the time you need to devote into building a business up http://www.chrispointon.f2s.com/Forum/html/emoticons/tongue.gif

There are always difficult customers to deal with, and even more difficult suppliers. Returns issues to address etc

Many people (quite rightly) vent their frustrations at receiving faulty goods to the distributor (Me http://www.chrispointon.f2s.com/Forum/html/emoticons/ohmy.gif ) forgetting that I don't design and make the goods I just represent the manufacturer!. Unfortunately some manufacturers are harder to deal with than others, and sadly some manufacturers don't give a damn if there products arrive faulty.

I also take calls and deal with customers upto around 11PM, so if I'm away yelling at a supplier during the day, then please feel free to call me during the Evening. I always check my emails and view this forum several times every day. So don't be shy http://www.chrispointon.f2s.com/Forum/html/emoticons/smile.gif

http://www.chrispointon.f2s.com/Forum/html/emoticons/smile.gif On the good news side, I've had a breakthrough in the dispute with "That particular supplier", after around 18 months of banging my head against a brickwall, I managed to get a meeting with the CEO and Sales Director at this Company.

They took my issues very seriously, and it appears that I am not the only distributor to complain about the various problems that have arisen over the last few months http://www.chrispointon.f2s.com/Forum/html/emoticons/ohmy.gif .

Work at improving their customer service is already underway, and although it won't happen overnight I think that I'll see a vast improvement from them. They are in the middle of an internal restructuring program and their staff shortages are also being addressed.

I've now dealing directly with their Sales Director, rather than just placing orders with "a contact" at the call centre, so he will be processing all my orders / returns / Quality issues / Gripes etc on a personal level.

Over the next few months we will also be establishing an internet link between the two companies, so I can view stock levels, latest pricing etc in real time 24/7, and this will also give me the opportunity at introducing new products before they hit the high street outlets http://www.chrispointon.f2s.com/Forum/html/emoticons/wink.gif

I have some major changes planned for the website, and various new products and services will be introduced during the coming months.

Don't forget that we also welcome your comments and suggestions http://www.chrispointon.f2s.com/Forum/html/emoticons/042.gif

Now if I could just find time to have a nervous breakdown......... http://www.chrispointon.f2s.com/Forum/html/emoticons/014.gif
