Grand 12 Inches

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I came across these two quadruple CD sets whilst doing some music searches this evening. A definate "must buy" for any DJ who likes to play classic dance tracks and prefers the full 12" versions:

http://www.liebrand.nl/grand12/index.html

For me these contain many of the 12" singles that I have that I haven't been able to get hold of on CD in their 12" form. And as the collections were mastered and put together by Ben Liebrand, you know that the quality will be right up there.

WOW! Some great memories there, I have many of them, but there's a few goodies to be had.

A great find. Where have you ordered them from? I want, I want!!

And I have ordered the Disco megamix "on a nostagia whim!"

I aw the track listing on that one, and it looked good. But I rarely buy mixed albums (as they are not DJ friendly) except the occasional one for my own enjoyment - particularly where the mixing is especially good or creative (as it sometimes gives me ideas for my own mixes).

I'll be interested to hear your comments on the Disco Megamix when you get it.

I tempted - Not only will these help my current "replace vinyl with CD" project, but I too have a great deal of faith in Ben Liebrand - his "Styles" LP (also needing to be replaced with the CD version - I'll take a look deeper into that site) is a very usable warm-up album (apart from the first 40 seconds).

I was particularly pleased to see Stephanie Mills "Medicine Song" on that track list above - as I found out a month or so ago, that my 12'' of that has picked up a scratch.

On the down side, and maybe Mr Liebrand will redeem this situation with his astute track/version selection, many many 12inch versions of tracks were pretty much exactly what the original track was, but went into a long, long, only the beat survived, instumental breakdown 3/4's of the way through. Or else, the 12inch version was too different from the bog standard radio version that the audience know, love (and will dance to).

For this reason, I tend to play the standard 7inch/radio edit and loop key parts of the track to lengthen it, in situations where the audience are really appreciating the tune.

The other really annoying thing with a few 80's 12inch singles were that they were simply no different at all to the 7inch single, same duration, same tracks, same remix etc, just 5 inches bigger, and £1.50 ~ £2 more expensive... http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/533.gif

I dont tend to rule out premixed CD's as much as I used to as I've been able to seamlessly splice out tracks that I dont want to include from premixed sets. For example, if I want to play tracks 1,2,3, then 6,8 and 9 from a megamix, I can splice out tracks 4&5, and 7, and store the correction for instant but optional recall at any future gig. This came in particularly handy over the last Christmas season, to rid otherwise useful Christmas mixes of "Another Rock'n'Roll Christmas" for topical reasons, and also removing the (already played) YMCA from a good party mix. (to save playing it twice).

The mega mix is for me, not to use on the disco. I am a non-mixer, so I won't use it as it would not fit in with what I do at my gigs. I just liked the look of the track listing. Something as a post xmas treat for little old me. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif

They have arrived!!!

Boy, am I impressed with these babies! The quality is excellent. The versions fine and I can't wait to do a retro night. Brill!!

The mixed album of disco classics is a three cd set, each mix being over 60 mins. The quality of the mixing shows Ben's abilities, this guy is pure genius! I am really really pleased with the whole sets that I have bought and thoroughly recommend them to you all!

Received mine this morning. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif

And the inner is signed by the man himself! http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/notworthy.gif

Just quickly stepping through the tracks....

On D'Train's "You're The One For Me" he has used the dub version intro before going in to the vocal version, just as I used to do live with two copies of the 12" - great minds think alike!

Michael Zager Band's "Let's All Chant" has a longer intro than my old 12".

Only down side so far is that the "Last night a DJ saved my life" acappella ends before the sound effects (toilet, etc) which I used to use - or were they a different track on the original 12"?

I can't comment on the sound quality yet as I've only listened on the computer, as I'm working right now.

Great set!!! http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/thumbup.gif

The sound effects were on a seperate short tack on the original 12".

I thought as much. I must admit that I haven't seen my copy of this in ages.

Good old Sam records!!!

Do you also remember Glen Adams Affair (Just A Groove), Mike & Brenda Sutton (We'll Make It) and KID (Don't Stop)? I keep thinking that I should buy this album.

Volume 3 arrived today and I've had a quick listen.

It's not quite as essential as Volumes 1 and 2 but contains some gems, such as the full 12" versions of Earth, Wind & Fire's "Boogie Wonderland" (which is very hard to find on CD) and David Bowie's "Let's Dance".

It also contains many classics that have also been on many other compilations in their 12" format, such as Can You Feel The Force, Ring My Bell, Contact, Get Down and Right In The Socket, but if you don't have these yet then consider this album.

There are a few "I haven't heard that in years" moments like Cheryl Lynn's "Shake It Up Tonight", Janis Ian's "Fly Too High" and the Rah Band's "Slide". Excellent stuff! And the full 12" version of Boys Town Gang's "Cruisin' The Streets" is... erm... interesting!

However, despite being billed as a 12" version, Positive Force's "We Got The Funk" isn't - The 12" is around 7.30 long, but this version is only 4.30 long. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/sad.gif
