NZ Bound with or without equipment ?

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I initially asked this question a good few months back but as I should be getting my residency visa (through my kiwi wife) in the next month or so AND we plan to go down there in mid-august, I'm still trying to work out what the best solution would be. This is what I have -

1) Large Ultimax stand on castors with cross bar. (Easy to dismantle)

2) JB system Rhythm 11010 mixer with graphic equaliser and twin cd players in flight case .

3) Soundlab Pro 2 way stereo channel crossover

4) 2 xJBsystem Pro 12 15" subwoofers. (heavy)

5) 2 x Pro 12 12" mids with horns

6) Atari smoke machine for small venues

7) Martin 700 smoke machine for larger ones .

7) 2 x Strobes with controller

8) Front multilight board with controller

9) Genie Light - Spinning spot pattern type

10) Datamoon Light - changing shapes & patterns

11) Large double Alligator - Roving colour patterns

12) 1 x Pin Spot

13) Terminator Light

14) JBsystem Ax 400 amp , Ax 700 amp all stacked in flightcase . (Heavy)

So.................I'm torn between selling it all and bringing it with me. I can see both sides of the arguement -

The cost of shipping it down would be expensive? I havent had any quotes yet but this would be combined with the relatively few number of possessions we'll be bringing (only live in 1 bedroom flat so Disco aside only small items will be coming)

Combine this with the fact that I have looked regurlarly at the NZ version of Ebay - "Trade-me" and understandly (60 mil population vs 4 million) there isnt much for sale in relation to Mobile Discos and I guess if one does pop up - it wont be cheap! If I did see something for sale I would bear it in mind and take into account the difference between what I would sell it for here plus the shipping cost, I suspect i would have to pay more on top of that - God I dont know................

Does anyone have any similiar experiences or can offer any practical help re shipping costs or purchases of equipment down there

I think Richard (or somebody else http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/533.gif ) once stated that new equipment was more expensive over there, probably due to shipping and freight charges from the manufacturers.

Practically, their electrical system is the same as the UK, other than simply changing over the mains plugs to those used in NZ, there will be no modifications or expense there.

I can see freight will be expensive, its a long way and a lot of weight. The company I work for sends products to the US by sea which in total weighs a fraction of what disco equipment would be and it isn't going as far! , and even that runs well into three figures for a regular account.

I would total up the weights and speak to some of the carriers and see what quotes come back. I would guess at £1500+ which is probably why people tend to leave furniture & heavy items etc behind when they emigrate and re-furnish from scratch locally.

You may well be better selling your gear in the UK before you go, and buying new gear in NZ, even if it is more expensive than comparable product in the UK, I think the cost of shipping your existing gear will far outweigh any price differences.

For new pricing ni New Zealand, check out the Rockshop website. They are a chain of retailers, so you'll get an idea on NZ vs UK prices. I know that the Bose PAS is cheaper here, but I haven't done other comparisons for a while. The exchange rate today shows that a new JBL Eon 15P active speaker system 130W+50W (original model) priced retail at NZ$1699 works out in the vicinity of £590. A Mackie SRM450 is about £723.

How does that compare with new retail sticker prices in the UK?

A single mackie SRM450 can be bought for about £499.99 each from most retailers in the UK. A JBL Eon 15P for around £450 each

That said, there are some products on the site which are not much different from the UK price.

I was in Auckland in March and stumbled across a DJ store selling (mainly) Wharfedale powered speakers, which are very good. Personally, I would leave the heavy stuff, like amps and speakers, but take the mixer/CD players and lighting/smoke machines.

QUOTE
Well, if you decide to sell I am looking for another Ultimax stand at the moment.....

cheers, Ill bear that in mind. However, after looking at the cost involved in setting up an equivalent Mobile Disco Im leaning towards shipping it.

That may change when I get a quote though http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/wallbash.gif
