Budget Desktop Cd Players

Recommended Posts

I'm trying to venture away from my twin CD players and like the look of Desktop CD players, however I want to start with some good budget ones and see if they agree with me!

So far i've found

Gemini CDJ02

Numark Axis 4

What are your opinions on these? Any others you may reccommend?

Thanks in advance.

Depends on how far your 'budget' will stetch.

last year I bought a Vestax CDX16, which is a twin top loader for about £500, but to be honest I'm not happy with it - the products being shipped have some issues although if you are able to pick & choose between individual units you will probably find one where the lids close properly, the pitch controls actually work at the lower percentages, the decks will read CD singles all the way through etc etc.

In other words don't buy one if the machine is in a mission-critical position, which mine isn't, luckily.

If you're using CD players (of any type) for professional use then I wouldn't skimp lest they let you down. If you're a bedroom DJ then fair enough but otherwise I'd go pro. And that essentially means Denon or Pioneer. At the lower end you're talking the Denon DNS1000 or the Pioneer CDJ200. Both are capable and proven and are around the £300-350 mark retail (each) depending on where you shop.

Stanton do some great ones which are certainly comparable to the Pioneers out there but at half the price

the Stanton C324 is an outstanding CD player and ive recently sold six of them at £690 a pair and everyone seems to be very impressed! (one guy was going to buy One CDJ1000 mk3 and save for the 2nd, but went for these instead)

Not even close! I rate Stanton in the same league as Kam or Numark. Horses for courses and just another badge-engineered chinese machine.

ive yet to see a CD player that looks anything like the Stantons, perhaps i missed it?

Ive personally used the Kam, Numarks, Stantons and Pioneers, so i can make a decision with all the facts to hand rather that making sweeping assumptions. oh and everything is made in China nowadays....

Look no lower in the market than the Denon S1200 or the Pioner CDJ400 for disco use....

anything else would be a waist of money as you will be replacing them with the pro units before too long...

These units you speak of, do you professionally repair/service them on a regular basis?

from what i assume and this is an assumption member bouncy dancefloor works for or has or is a retailer of products . His knowledge of using various product and the line i have sold lends me to this assumption BUT i may be very wrong

My own experience of stanton was from 1988 to 1989 i worked for a retailer who sold hifi and bits of DJ gear i sold Technics 1210's mk2 and sold lots of stanton 500AL cartridges for scratchers made by stanton themselves ..i believe but am not 100% certain that the stanton name was used on products later made not by themselves but others

the stanton brand had kudos just as JCB dont really make DIY power drills its just the parent company of morphy richards using the name JCB under licence to sell drills at argos a morphy ricards drill would not have the same kudos as a JCB drill for example..

wharfedale dont make tellies for example its just a chinese brand with a wharfedale badge under licence ..NOW the brand name holders do have a say on what there name goes on and some times it can be a cracker but also it can be a dog too as the fire hazard wharfedale crt tellys proved.

a lot of smaller brands arent what they seem ...denon ,pioneer etc do make there own stuff to exact spec hence the price ..sometimes you can get a bargain with cheap stuff ..you pays your money you takes your chances....

making sweeping assumptions

The US company Stanton Magnetics are the company that make the turntable cartridges that we all know, (also badged Pickering, common in UK markets in the 70's / twin-console era). Stanton's speaker brand is Cerwin Vega. A few years ago they started badging up chinese cd players bearing a remarkable likeness to Kam and Citronic, (Stanton & Cerwin Vega were until recently imported exclusively by Lamba UK, the Kam brand people) & often sold by DJ shops, I suspect they hope their name will add status to the machines. Now, of course like most brnads, they have exclusive designs and software-based DJ stuff.

Enquirer, yes that is correct, i have many years experience in retail with all of those brandnames, including handling service issues!

in response to SuperstarDeejay, how about we talk about the CURRENT models and even in particular the model i mentioned? Which as i have already stated, i have first hand experience of using all the latest Stanton models (in addition to the other brands mentioned) and they dont compare to the other budget brands. You really shouldnt throw around sweeping statements about equipment that you have no experience with!

How do you know what experience I have, exactly?

I don't doubt it!

There's a special section in this forum for dealers to advertise their products.

The Denon DNS1000's I mentioned are £595 a pair retail. The Pioneer CDJ200's are £670 a pair retail, both cheaper than the price you say you sell your Stantons at.

You haven't seen any so I posted three examples.

As for the model you've cited, well, the CD player that resembles it most (though unrelated) is the superior Denon DNS3500 which no doubt was what inspired Stanton's C324.
