  1. Ha, I can beat you on that one. The recruitment agency that I am with asked about any past work. I told them about my DJ'ing and such to which the recruitment agency replied back, "Yeah, but that is just smiling at pretty ladies all night." I wish!!! It really makes me angry about how little appreciation people have about our profession. James
  2. I know how you feel Ray. I had a gig a month ago for my School's Celebration weekend. I was hired to start from 9:30pm-ish till midnight/whenever people went. There was a fish and chip meal before hand and some inflatable surfing machines and bouncy castle stuff on the field outside. It started at 7 so ample time for people to eat and socialise before I started the disco. Turned out that the fish van was late and that a massive cue formed so it wasn't until 10:30 they had all eaten etc... So I fired up the speakers and started pumping out the tunes. A smattering of people turned up a
  3. I usually just go up to the bar and sort of demand (A bit of a strong word but it adds a sense of urgency to it) a glass of water and just say I am the DJ. The bar man always nods and brings it fairly quickly. When I have DJ'd for people of my age (18) I sometimes, in a happy tone of voice, when there is a bit of a queue go, "DJ coming through, this will be quick!" and they split like the Red Sea.

    Glee

Again, my name must be added to the list of haters. Just like the point made several times above, at least they like it when it is played. My tip is that I have a friend who's I-Phone I borrow which has their first album on. She is happy for me to take it when ever I am DJ'ing which has saved me about £7.

    New Music!

Isn't Dizzee's new song called 'Dirty Disco' not Dizzee Disco? Either way, something very special is going to have to knock this one off course this summer! James
  6. It is interesting to see that Teez is the only one that touched on the awards from a DJ's point of view. I may only be fresh to the forum but I wonder what would happen if there was an awards ceremony for the best song produced that gets people dancing. DJ's being the judges. That would be interesting to see who would win. James
  7. I think JLS's category was tight. They probably won it because they seem to be in the Lime Light at the moment where as the other nominees have had their moment, for now. If you get what I mean. I think Muse should have won British Group in my opinion. Not wanting to go off topic but, what the hell was Lady GaGa's set meant to be? I know it was a tribute but... I suppose when they get to such a high level anything they do is adored by their huge fan base regardless. James.
  8. Well, I'm at school but I'm 18 :) I know it's all about the music (and the money!), I have been doing it for 8 fantastic years. I just don't want to be denied permission to DJ if I turn up to do someones party and ruin it all. Also, I hear you can be prosecuted thousands of pounds if you haven't got it for the actual circumstance, which... well... as a student... you get the idea! So, just one question remains which I think will put this to bed (I hope!). If I D/L music from my PC, for example using I-Tunes, then move it to my Laptop (which I don't want to connect to the internet)
  9. Oh, I see what has happened. When I mean 'perform', I mean run Disco's, DJ'ing. What I was originally asking was which licence I need (the one you stated as "DUB") to play MP3's on a Laptop instead of using CD Decks and CD's. I haven't spoken to any DJ's as I am the only one in my whole school and the only other DJ's work for big clubs. Sorry if this sounds a bit cheeky ,but I think it would be clearer to me if a link was posted to the licence? Thanks for putting up with me so far! :ouch: James
  10. I am totally confused. Don't you need to have a licence to do a Disco using a Laptop as opposed to CD's? If so which one? Also, I don't really do Disco's in set venues. I tend to advertise that I can do them anywhere. I've yet to get the Laptop. I need to work out the total cost all things considered first before I make a decision. Sorry if I am being a bit vague but it is confusing looking at PPL's website. James
  11. Sorry to resurect this thread but I thought it would be better then to start another one. 1. What's the current situation on the licences? All the stuff about it I have found on the internet is quite old (a few years old) and I guess things have changed. 2. Which ones do I need to perform with a Laptop using D/L'ed music in Schools, Hotels, Church Halls and Pub's? Thanks! James
  12. Hey, I'm new to the forum but here goes... I've been doing semi-temporary/mobile Disco's for a while now using CD's and now I think is the time to switch to using a Laptop. I understand the pro's and con's of Laptop's Vs. CD's and have read round the subject but there is one detail which I am unsure of, which Laptop to get? It would be a dedicated Laptop for Disco's and never linked to the internet. I have read a few Computer magazines but all they go on about is gaming performance and internet speeds. I need to know, which Laptop is best for DJ'ing? My budget is £500 t
