What A Great Idea Someone Has Had

Recommended Posts

Look what arrived in my inbox today:

Dear Dj,

First I must apologise for the email, I nicked your address of a forum we both visit. I thought you might be interested in something I'm doing.

I've recently retired from professional Djing. I have been playing some of the biggest clubs in the UK and Europe for the past 15 years, and have done well enough out of it to afford to retire from the clubs at the grand old age of 39. I'll still carry on my radio show. Just not killing myself on the road 24/7

I may have retired from club Djing, but the record companies seem to have not read the press release I have sent them, and continue to send me hundreds of cds and loads of vinyl each week. I've told them not to bother, but they carry on doing it.

It took me years and years to get on the "A" list of these mailing lists. Receiving tracks that only 20 DJs get and limited edition stuff and all that. I considered sticking all my mailing lists on eBay. Simply forwarding all the music I get sent automatically via my PO BOX to someone else would be quite simple. But I have changed my mind.

What I am going to do is to Burn a DVD (some times 2) a week off of all the music I get sent. House, trance, R'n'B, Hip Hop, pretty much every genre there is. As I need to put this music into the computer at the radio station. It gets ripped anyway. And send them to 20 Djs a week.

I came up with this idea as to hep those Djs starting out to get some of the new music first. And hopefully give you an advantage to get a leg up.

If you are interested in this email me back.

If you are not.

Shame it's illegal, as promos are still subject to copyright laws.

One of the guys on MDD has already forwarded the email address & ISP address to the relevant authorities

Steve... Mad bad & dangerous to know

The opinions of Corabar Steve are not necessarily those of Corabar Ltd or any of it's subsidiary companies

Just another pirate trying to make money out of other peoples work...

doubt he's even a dj, he's just using p2p software tofind his music...

But in an ideal world it would be nice to get a dvd once a month with all the promos on...

All he'd have to do to stop receiving all this music would be to stop filling out the feedback forms......

In any case I'm not sure white label stuff would be of much use to your average mobile jock.

It would be a lot better for me personally.

I have been on around 12 mailouts for the past 10 years and the amount of stuff I have been sent in the past (and now) is unbelievable.

It's true, all this guy has to do (if he is what he says he is) is just not return any reactions sheets by post or online. The companies are really hot on reactions being sent back and if they aren't then you can get kicked off their lists. There are literally 100's of DJ's out there who can't get on these lists as the waiting lists are huge.

I must admit that I thought about the same thing a couple of years ago but never took it up. I spend one day a week (usually a sunday evening) filling in all my reactions so that they are up to date etc. There are also changes along the way too because of DJ's selling promos on Ebay etc... There is talk of DJ's being sent MP3's in the future, this was mentioned last year but whether it happens or not is another thing.

I can see that it would work if you use just CD's but if you are a vinyl jock then it won't be of much help. I must admit that if I took out everything out with me that I get sent, I would have a van ful of boxes of tunes and no space for equipment to play it on so once a fortnight I put everything on cd's myself. I keep the promos in boxes so that they are there as backup should anyone query what I am doing. At the end of the day though, they are promotional items and I am being sent them to promote the songs and bands no matter what the genre of music is. I know it says on them that they should not be uploaded to the internet, shared on p2p's, sold on auction sites or copied etc... Yes I am copying it to put it on a disc for my use and my use only and all of the companies that send them out to me know that we all do this. They don't have a problem with it, what they do object to is seeing items that they have sent out being sold on ebay within hours of the dj's receiving them. I watch ebay a lot as I collect Oasis and Depeche Mode records, cds etc.. I am lucky enough to be on 2 lists that send me both of these bands so I do ok but it's interesting to see just how much these items go for too.

A number of record companies are now digitally tagging promo CD's with unique ID's so that they can trace digitally ripped or copied versions to determine who is leaking pre-release tracks.

I should add this email came from another forum, not for mobile jocks but for a certain brand of pro audio DJ equipment which I am a proud user of.
