According the the news tonight the damage is estimated around £3billion!

TonyB 0
Its hard to imagine what the people affected by the floods are going through when we in Essex haven't been affected. The weather over the weekend was blue skies and sunshine although its a bit more gloomy now. What brings it a bit closer to home is that I live about 2000 yards from a river. Last year some proposed building was blocked by department of the environment because the proposed site is a natural drainage area that prevents flooding. Surprise, surprise, suddenly building permission has been granted for different contractors to build a housing estate on the same land. Councils who make these stupid decisions to grant planning permission should be made accountable for their actions. What part of if the water has no where to drain away to, it will cause flooding do they not understand?

People have lost everything and again according to press and news statements SOME insurance services aren;t gonna stump up!
music box 0
We where in the Gloucestershire area on Friday and saw the devastation in the area. It was not nice to see, and really feel for those who are affected. We in Egham are now on red alert along all the Thames areas as for Wednesday we are on extreme Red alert first time it's ever been given out. Been told by the river and weather people that we are due for the same as Friday's weather. So not sure at all whats going to happen. Sand bags are out and all these areas are flood plans. The only answer is for the Government to make some discusions very quickly and start digging some very big ditches to carry this water away to where it can be collected. But that will take about 2 years for that to happen in the means time we just have to listern to it's happened and lets get on with it till it all goes away and can be forgotten till the next time. Sorry thats my rant over with. Cheers all Pete
digitaldistortion 0
The aid you're thinking about won't happen! This is purely because the thinking will be (and is) that in a modern (non third world) society, homeowners etc are covered by insurances and investment, unlike the shoreside communities that were hit by the tsunami and/or flooding. Think of New Orleans or Boscastle Cheers! Roy B. Digital Distortion Disco (D3 Entertainments) See you around!
RichardP 0
Got to agree with you there, Pete. My parents live right next to a stream in a village outside Evesham (one of the towns which has had so much focus over the weekend with devastating floods). The situation is a bit worse than the similar 1998 floods which caused much destruction to the waterside area and many others. You'd have thought some lessons would have been learnt - but there seems little evidence of it - after the big floods of 1998, everyone tidied up, renovated and carried on - somewhat hoping it wouldn't re-occur. Got to be such a difficult time in areas of Glos & Worcs at the moment to say the least - limited water supplies (up to 2 weeks outage I now hear) and power still out in places ... bottles of water being inconsistently rationed, 4 litre bottles of milk sold for £5, loaf of bread £5 (if there's even bread available) I hear :scared: Very best wishes and good luck to everyone affected by flooding - hope things return to some level of normality as soon as possible  Edited July 24, 2007 by RichardP
otronics 0
Yes - getting people to do things is very difficult. It takes effort, time and most likely money (all those in this instance). As to aid - We are an MEDC (tsunami was an LEDC) so 'aid' here should be in the form of insurance (if their policy covers it). Other aid here is shelter which people have received, along with supplies etc. Oliver Head, OTronics Media Services Ltd, Covering Wiltshire, Somerset, Dorset and surrounding areas.
