Using SD cards for audio playback

It'll never catch on! I can see it would be handy as a back up system but if you have tracks spread over numerous SD cards, you would need either a paper list or a list on a lap top so that you know which track is on which card.

Samsung are already working on 200Gb cards which will be available in about a years time, this will be the future, very soon you will only see hard drives in servers. most p.c.'s will have only solid state storage.

I think it's a great idea, i just wish this type of machine would allow you to attach a monitor as the onboard screen is too small for the amount of information on them, and my my eyesight is crap !!!!!

I also can't see any use for this, apart from backup. Reason being, is I firmly beleive the biggest advantage of PC DJ-ing is the large screen you get on your PC/laptop to be able to see lots of tracks at once and scan through for ideas... neither this device, or any of the cortex, denon etc. machines can quite compare with this IMO.

Totally agree also non of the HDC's can do what my laptop does.. The HDC will have a place in the DJ arena but it will never have the flexability a laptop has. But I guess it all depends where you are in the game. If you are on CD then a HDC is a massive leap forward. But if your on a laptop then a HDC IMHO is a massive backward step. But it all comes down to what you want to do with your chosen play in device.

As for the ADJ beastie, sure it'll have it's little niches in the market, and I can think of quite a few I can make use of myself, so I'm buying a couple, but I'm gonna be paying a bit less than they want . . . . . . . . .

Well yeah.. but thats hardly a new idea. The Numark DMC 1 controller I use has been around for years.. although granted it doesn't do all the things the Denon can.

 

Oh and I bought an SDJ1 anyway after playing with it at Clive's show. Will probably just be used at home for now, but once I start taking it out it'll save having to setup my laptop as a backup at every gig.

 

At the price it is, you can't really beat it. A HC4500 is next on my list, as soon as it works reliably with Virtual DJ.

I believe you are limited to 4Gb due to the filesystem format on this device.

 

Having played with it, it's a great little device considering it's less than £200. Uncomplicated, easy to use, cheap - will sell very well. I may get one as a backup.

Correct - 4GB maximum, as the unit is only SD compatible, not SDHC (high capacity) which is around five hundred songs per card at a decent bitrate. The "searching" is by folder only, no string searching etc.

 

The styling looks as if Cortex and Numark had an unwanted lovechild.

 

An "ok", "No frills" unit, but if people are looking for something that would serve as a decent backup, or indeed a better than average, primary playback device with nearly all of the most upto date features - it would be worth waiting until March(ish). :ads: More details will be revealed at the SEDA event this Sunday.

Having had a play with one at CRS on Sunday, my main concerns are it's too easy to accidentally change tracks while one is playing & it's also possible to eject the card that you are playing from while it's playing, end result silence.
