just read a newspaper article.... there are now 42 fixed and 2 mobile speed cameras in Blackpool and the number of traffic wardens has increased from 6 to 29 !!!!! http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/fear.gif

i'm all for increased education of drivers to make the roads safer but is this not purely a cash generator .... http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/huh.gif

That's pretty heavy going but it's going to be seriously rich pickings in Blackpool, especially in the summer http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/188.gif

Gives work to a few more people I suppose http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/wacko.gif

I got pulled over this morning at 5.15AM for doing 'approx 45 mph' in a 40 zone, was bollocked and let go. The funny thing is the police car only had one headlight working !!

I don't mind been pulled !!!

I mean being stopped in my van, I would rather be stopped and asked a few questions if it means if some ba http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/censored.gif rd stole my van it would happen to them too, and maybe I get my van and kit back.

.....but what do I know ?

I've been warned for doing 52 in a 50 before now, it was a bloody farce. Yes if I was doing 50mph in a 30mph area past a school then I need prosecuting but 52mph in a 50mph zone at 1AM on a Country Road....get real http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/censored.gif .

Personally I think it was just an excuse to stop me (not that they need one these days) a van out late at night, full of gear and registered in another town must be a reason to check it out, although had it been reported stolen or was full of illegal immegrants or stolen goods then they probably wouldn't have bothered.

I have a Friend who is in the Police Force so i'm not going to slag them ALL off -most work hard with little support, however there are a few who have their sights set on promotion... whatever it takes.

BTW:- Its now LEGAL in the UK to own and use a Radar Detector. I'm not condoning the use of them, but as Andy says most of the camera's are miles away from built up areas along long straight roads or dual carriageways in KNOWN areas where drivers could put their foot down in relative safety.

I'm all for speed humps and camera's in built up areas but the majority of camera's are in places which are just revenue earners I also think in common with Germany that there should be no speed restriction on the Motorways unless there is severe weather. The Majority of people are doing 80 - 85 mph in any case.

You can view the locations of speed cameras for each area of the UK HERE

We were fairly lucky until a year ago as the East riding had no fixed camera and just traffic car patrols. We now still have no camera's but those mobile van camera's EVERYWHERE. Its hardly out the local papers due to it being seriously linked with revenue generation.

The locations chosen are subject to certain criteria being met, such as 2 serious accidents in the past few years but our roads must have been carnage by the looks of things!

Also we hardly have any traffic cops on patrol now, just the vans hence driving in non speed camera zones is said to be getting much worse

Interesting Point on Speed cameras only being installed in area's with high accident rates. I live very close to Derbyshire, not only a very picturesque part of the world but home to some of the worst roads in the UK. In particular is a road called the A537 "Cat and Fiddle" which was recently found to be the UK's worst road for accidents - you guessed it - not a single speed camera. In the same county is the A57 Snake Pass - again a notorious road claiming the lives of many motorists, but again, not a single camera in sight!. However in Congleton, a relatively small market town we have a speed camera on almost every main entry / exit road! http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/scared.gif

Ah, but have you noticed that when a council has not spent all it budget, and the new budget year is just around the corner, speed bumps crop up everywhere! Its one way of the council getting rid of their spare cash to ensure that the budget for the next year is higher,,,, which in turn means that they can then put up council tax!

Talking speed cameras, I have found tons around southampton, but the thing they have fogotten about is to paint the lines on the road which means the camera can measure the speed of the vehicle..... Why put the cameras up if they are as good as useless in being able to determine how fast a vehicle is going!

Kazz be careful......... be very careful........ the next generation cameras do not need lines painted on the road and this will become a thing of the past as they are updated!

The new generation camera's are called "SPECS" and rely on measuring the distance of a vehicle between two points and then work out the average speed. These camera's are evil - the first camera takes a snapshot of your number plate, logs it and then compares it to that taken with a camera say 1/2 mile away - then it it works out that you've broken the speed limit between the 2 points - the plate details are sent to the local boys in blue and you get a fixed penalty through the post. They work with an unlimited amount of vehicles and over all 3 lanes so there is no escape.

The rumour is that they are being included in all the new Motorway matrix signs, they (the police) are playing it down as a rumour, but those in the know say differently. The M6 and M4 are already rife with them - allegedly.

In any other country the SPECS system of operation would be a breach of privacy - however the motorist is automatically a criminal in the UK - so Crooksey consider yourself lucky that your in Canada http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/smile.gif

I know what you mean Tony

Blackpool has become an absolute farce for speed cameras. Im noticing, on average one appearing every week that I havent seen before.

Its always the case, too, when youre driving along at 30, and the guy (or girl) in front of you slams on the anchors and slows down to 20 when they approach a speed camera just because they cant drive at a constant speed http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/nono.gif

When will it end?!

Spin/Kazz are right, the new camera's being put up around here dont's need the traditional white marking's on the road, nore do they have flashes, and do both side's of the road at once http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/fear.gif

As Kazz menioned they are digital camera's so get sent to the local cop shop within seconds!!

wonder how much money and man power is required to "police" and enforce the speed cameras? Probably more than they spend on doing checks on people working with children..... - and with disasterous consequence!

I see in Cornwall that 2 violent Murders have taken place recently and still remain unsolved which means that there are still 2 very dangerous people still free to murder again. But don't worry because the police are fighting back with a....................

Crack down on illegal registration plates!!! http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/wallbash.gif. Doesn't it give you that warm safe feeling to sleep at night knowing that murderers stalk the streets, but criminals with slightly mis worded car registrations are all under lock and key!. This country has gone beyond all help, its now embarrassing to tell people you are from the UK.

well I wouldnt go that far! Its all down to money, money, money!

Its a fickle old world when they spend billions and billions on space research and getting rockets and the like to the moon and mars.. but wont invest that much in trying to find a cure for cancer! Makes my blood boil!

New Forest district council are at the moment putting pavements around the area where they are totally unneccessary - some actually running parallel with others - obviously trying to spend their budget.. but they are trying to close FIVE local schools cos they reckon the birth rate is in decline.... wonder what they will do if we have a baby boom - as is a proven fact after war (iraq?)... are they then gonna build more new schools to replace the ones they have closed and sold off to private developers building houses.. and when the houses are built, how are they gonna school all those extra kids moving to the area> Fickle!

I TELL PEOPLE THAT I AM FROM ENGLAND EVERYDAY AND I AM PROUD OF IT! YES I AM SHOUTING!

Being on the outside looking in,people do actualy look up to britain, and yes police funds are misused and you would not believe that it is humanly possible to be anywhere near as bad as the norwegian police!jail system etc etc, once arrested you are sent home to wait a year for your court date,if guilty you are not carted off immediately but for shorter sentences serve when it suits you.Longer sentences you have to wait for an available ROOM in the nice warm prison (own shower,1 man to a room,tv,internet etc etc)It is possible on lesser sentences to continue in your job and just stay at prison at night. You can have sex, weekends at home and get reimbursed for time served,FOR GODS SAKE.We have roads with speed cameras that are impossible to drive faster than 6 mph.Our top speed limit is 50mph,20mph over your licence is gone and you get fined and have to take your whole test again including exams and ice driving course. People get about 2 months in jail for rape, when you get 2 months for having alcohol in your blood when driving, people aint vetted before working in schools,I could go on for hours,be proud to be British there are many small countries who believe England is a leader and there are many good and positive things with the UK. RANT OVER

I will try anything,once!

I gotta agree with Chris S here. The UK has a LOT going for it and you sometimes need to see the situation elsewhere to realise actually how lucky we in the UK are.

People in Britain are forever slagging the National Health Service for example but you should see the situation in most countries around the world http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/fear.gif Our Health system is one of the best in the world; that is the truth. Sure we have many things wrong with the country, but there is not a place on earth where EVERYTHING is perfect (and if there was think how boring it would be http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/sleep1.gif ). Even those holiday paradises soon wear off when you actually live in them. Believe me I'm speaking from experience; I've lived/worked in 14 countries around the world over a period of 12 years that I lived abroad and visited over 70 countries. We are EXTREMELY lucky to be living in England.

I guess now people will throw certain examples of things in other countries that are better; well of course there are certain things that other countries are better at but there are a great many things that we are far better at.

On average about once a month someone will say to me "why on earth did you come back to live here" and I usually just smile and make a joke but the truth is because it's a great place to be... even with all the crap and madness we have to put up with http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/wacko.gif http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/tongue.gif
