How To Value Old Vinyl Records

Recommended Posts

I've sold loads from collection of 60's soul, motown and rock 45's on E-Bay using the Record Price Guide (published by Record Collector magazine) to get an idea of value.

In the end, of course, they're worth only what someone will pay!

Some 12" singles are worth a fortune.

Check record collector for the prices. (Also a goos source for shops who may purchase collections)

I was very involved in the record collector market for a while - I had stalls at many of the major record fairs for 4 or 5 years. I'd avoid dealers at all costs, they will give you a fraction of the value because they want to make a profit.

Spinner is right, Ebay is your friend - it's certainly the place to start. The Record Collector magazine and their guide is a very useful resource. It's unlikely that you are sat on a Gold Mine, but one record in that collection may be worth more than all the others put together.

Music has never been easier to buy, good luck.

A site that may be worth checking out - Popsike

http://www.popsike.com/index.html

type in the name of the artist & tune - it will give auction results [be warned - its NOT %100 accurate] ..

The biggest headache will be where to start !

my advice [for the little its worth]

sort out your records into piles

Chart Hits - generally not worth much - unless they have something 'different' about them [ limited release pic disc etc]

Popular dancefloor hits [non chart] - worth a bit more money , as they probably have a following today [motown N/S Ska etc]

Indulgences [worth a punt!?] , records bought becuase you felt there may be something that will 'hit big' on a dancefloor - but sank without trace ! -- these are the ones that may be worth some big bucks !!!

Warnings - the value of a record is TOTALLY dependant on its condition, including the sleeve and label .

A 45 that has been 'riced' ie the centre knocked out loses value

as does 'Soundman markings' - writing on label - or scratching out title ...

Best of luck

Brian
