Why do you think im on here??
  1. Answer to the question: I'd take both the CD Decks and the laptop if I were you. It sounds like your more comfortable with the laptop but you just never know what might happen on the night. The other point raised: Well...Last night was the first time in a year or so I was at a function as a guest rather than a DJ. The entertainment was provided by a resident vocalist, a vocalist/comedian, Garry Mullen as Freddie Mercury (Former Stars In Their Eyes winner 2000 and DJ for the last 2 hours. Everyone was entertained by all the live acts but the enjoyment stopped as soon as the DJ star
  2. Moog, I don't credit all our success to our lighting. That would be just plain stupid. It's the right combination of really good music, entertainment and a balance of lighting that create the right party atmosphere at a gig. A packed dancefloor is great but just like the Hugmaster says: Even if there not dancing it doesnt mean they are not having a good time. I see this quite a lot during the first hour of a gig. Hardly anyone will dance, but all round the room you'll see toe tappers. I don't rely on my lighting to get bookings. I rely on me for that. The way things are goping
  3. I always turn it on to silent. Not as if anybody is going to hear it though. It's a business line, so any calls I get on it are generally related to it in some way or another. That and for contacting me in an emergency. Wouldn't want to miss out on a really good job cos you didnt answer the phone...would you?? If it's a potential client I just explain that I'm working at present (This works so much better if it's a song they like on at the time) and if it's ok with them I arrange to call them back in order to discuss their requirements in more detail. People normally see this as a
  4. Chris it looks great. I'm V impressed I want to show you mine though, not as pretty but V effective. Although some members would disagree with the ethics and wot not, although I have options depending on the function. A fully lit room - what by candle light. It's cos you used the flash to take the pic, you can tell cos of the notice board and your cases. Ross.
  5. FAO Kazzachi "Lights - big, small - whatever ..... nobody really cares do they?" Sounds more like a half done job to me. Our discos are always judged on their quality and success. Packed dancefloors all night speak for themselves. We are constantly thanked for providing a great night's entertainment and 95% of the time hear people comment on our spectacular light show. Two years running I have done Hunter High School in Eastkilbrides Christmas Nights, they have 3 to split up the age groups. While Setting up for the 5th & 6th years, two prefects came in to ask us about music
  6. I'm sure I'v said it before and I'll say it again. I see no place for light screens - never had them and never will Sorry Spin old chap, their just not worth it for no effect. Except as a dancefloor but thats something completely different from what were on about here. I used to work open. But now I have somehing a little special - I'll post an image shortly. It looks great and is effective - produces more light than a pair of screens!! Ross.
  7. There are a lot of really good effects out just now priced between £100 and £140 Chauvet's "Corona" is one of these @ £134 the effect looks great, colours are bright and sharp - uses to 150W lamps so it keeps your power requirements down. Looks amazing through smoke or haze. I'm about to order one. My only complaint of it (and it's a biggy) but I'm gonna wave it this time cos its so good is it's shape, this is very bulky and it's understandable when you appreciate how the effect works. I would also have liked to have seen some control - but this is a budget effect and would have taken
  8. I love lighting - it really creates atmosphere which is our aim. I'm an addict and always over spend on lighting - what I've got planned for 2004 is rediculous. It's little wonder I make very little money if any. £200 is not alot to play with in my opinion - you'd be struggeling to get anything of an value to your show although if you stretch a bit I'd recommend a pair of Soundlab "Colour Scans" they are DMX, will work of music and they even throw in a DMX board. At the price you really couldnt ask for more, well..... But the best way you could ever spend it in my most honest opinion
  9. I was doing Abbey formerly "Abbey Nationals" Christmas party on Sunday the 21st Dec this year. 300 people - One of my favourite gigs of all time. Our show always looks outstanding but on this particular occassion it looked even better. This was aided by the venue, an old church, acoustics were shocking cos the ceiling was like 80ft high maybe more, but plenty of room to show off our lights!! On this particular occassion I too had a "fiddler". God they do my box in. It was towards the end of the night and initially she approached me as it turns out cos she fancied me - sez her boss.. l
  10. If you want to get a really good "curent" collection going, buy all the EZH discs, I've got them all and think they are great. Get a couple of the "party pack" style collections and you'll get loads of the older most requested tracks. The EK Essential Party Pack one is really good for old new stuff - last 5 years or so. Player wise the RSQ/JVC machine won't let you down, it's the exact same thing. If your setting it up as a dedicated karaoke setup get a Behringer UB1832FX, it's cost effective and gives you plenty of scope. I'm using the Behringer above and a PC setup - the software j
  11. Hey Gary I know it doesnt do it exactly, but is very close. Numark CDN88 with beat keeper. Had a play with a mates a couple of weeks ago. It gets the bpm right for you, locks it, then no matter what you do - Scratch it, Pitch it, Back Spin it, it gets it right whenever you let it play again. It's defenitely a step in the right direction. Im still on Gemeni CD340's they dont have any magic in them at all. Im just saying what I think. As long as the Mix isn't done automatically, ie. Put a list of songs in and press auto, members should be able to do whatever they want. I don't min
  12. There's no need for that, you know exactly what i was getting at! http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/nono.gif Although the day a model that gets itself out the van and sets up for you comes out, I'll be the first to have one. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/thumbup.gif On a serious note though: Any new DJ starting out doesnt have to learn the skills involved in training your ears to beat-match quickly. The machine does it for you. Of course there is still mix style...but denon and pioneer will work that one out soon enough. Also I found out today I have an ear infec
  13. All Im gonna say about rules is... Anyone who was at PLASA this year will know that most of the DJ products now do just about all of the work for you!!! The competition is about Creativity, Originality and Skill. Use whatever means you have available to give your MIX the edge. Anybody worried about being disadvantaged, their is plenty of free software around. Its all the same whatever way you look at it. Anyway what about DJ's that only use PC to mix. I prefer hardware myself, I'm just putting the point across. Ross.
  14. Im up for it!! One thing I would say is, Does it matter how people compile their mix: Some people on the site will be limited by their "DJing" hardware, eg. Is there anybody who doesn't have pitch on their CD players?? It is almost certain that everyone on the site will have a computer. Beat-mixing isn't hard - anyone can do it. PCDJ style beat mixes with a simple X-Fade will be obvious. The competition is judging mixing ability and "programming" skills - putting the track order together. I know of DJ's who only use PC to do their mix, personally I hate it Harware wil
  15. QUOTE (Cheezy @ Oct 20 2003, 11:52 AM) Great night! Played lots of up to date chart stuff. I played Black Eye Peas 4 times - they couldn't get enough! Cheezy, I know in this game we play to please, but 4 times is a bit much of the same song. Up here in Scotland I'd get linched if I had to play a song 4 times to keep a crowd going!! What does everybody else think about this?? Opinions Welcome. If they love a song that much I'll maybe play it twice in a night but, I also think about the people who will be sick of hearing it. Overkill, you'll wear the song out. I regularly hear compl
