  1. I always feel guilty playing Young Hearts Run Free at weddings. I think one of the opening lines is "whats the point of sharing this one and only life" I've been asked a couple of times to play "Somebody else's guy" by Jocelyn Brown at weddings but usually politely refuse just in case the requestee is a disgruntled ex. I've played Gold Digger by Kanye West a few times at weddings and fortunately people have seen the funny side of it.
  2. I would be interested to know what modern\recent tracks people are finding work well at the moment. I like to make sure that I play some recent tracks as well as the usual 60's, 70's 80's 90's etc and at present include some Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, Katy B (lights on), Rihanna (Only Girl), No Speak Americano, Black Eyed Peas but am getting no reaction. I must admit to sticking more to the danceable recent tracks as stated above however I am finding that I am getting requests for JLS, Justin Bielber, Taio Cruz. This is mainly at weddings and dinner dances over Christmas and New Ye
  3. I tend to play Rat Pack music as background music plus a few similar artists (Paul Anka, Tony Bennett, Nat King Cole) You can also through in some of the current day artists that are producing easy listening material like Katie Melua, Diana Krall, Harry Connick Jnr, Michael Buble and Jack Johnson to name but a few.
  4. My 6th Year at a very nice Hotel in Bath but possibly one year to many. New Years Eve is a special day for me with lots of wonderful memories of parties past and for me personally is a bigger event than Christmas. Unfortunately the evening was very average however they kept dancing until 2 in the morning and some of them still wanted more so I must have been doing something right. In the past the guests have been really chatty from the moment they arrive and often I have been able to pick up some requests before they have even sat down for their meal (the hotel gathers all the g
  5. Looks like a dream gig to me. The thought of somebody requesting the Ramones makes me come over all goose pimply. I have always wondered if someone asks for this type of music for the entire evening whether it only works if everyone there is into the same type of music. I always fancied doing a few hours of this type of music (old punk and indie) at some sort of live venue between and before bands. Unfortunately the opportunity has never arisen.
  6. A two day/night motorcycle owners club national festival for me over the weekend (Friday and Saturday night). Live bands and singers, with me playing music inbetween the live acts and a couple of hours disco at the end of each evening. Lovely people, one particularly excellent Slade Tribute band and all in all, a terrific weekend.

    1980's

Interesting to see a few soul\disco type tracks being listed as I tend to think of the 80's as being more of a new romantic\rock decade rather than soul and disco (I tend to think of that as being more the 70's). I have to admit to usually playing Billie Jean and Whitney Houston, and it usually goes down really well, but I usually tack it onto the end of the motown segment rather than the 80's material. Several tracks there that I have tried before and have cleared the floor with devasting effect (Love Cats in particular) but also plenty of interesting ideas. Thanks for that.

    1980's

My idea of the 1980's seems to be very different from everyone else, which is surprising as I am in my 40's and was a teenager during the 1980's. I often get asked at gigs "can you play some 80's for us, we love the 80's stuff" but after a couple of songs the dance floor tends to start emptying. If asked for some 80's I tend to play some Wham (wake me up before you gogo), B52's (Love Shack), Soft Cell (Tainted Love), Human League (Don't you want me) and possibly some AHA (Take on Me). Where am I going wrong and what 80's tracks do people play that constantly go down well?
  9. downloaded Xanadu yesterday to take a listen to the track. I thought Sharlene Spiteri's vocals were pretty good but the track was missing the magic of ELO' backing. Considering the original track must be about 30 year ago it makes you realise how good ELO were (and how underated they have been since).
  10. I'm glad i'm not the only one that feels uncomfortable playing the dirty version. Many thanks for the links. The song seemed to work really well with Starstrukk on Saturday night so will be giving it (the clean version) another play this weekend.
  11. Excellent track to get a party jumping but far too much swearing to play at a family party, does anyone know if there is a cleaned up version available and if so where I can get it from?
  12. I would definately add:- Raise your hands - Reef Song No.2 - Blur Smells like teen spirit - Nirvana Although I have to admit that Nirvana is not really Indie.
  13. I was slightly shocked last night when I turned up to do the Christmas Party at a local Social Club where I have doing functions for about the last 8 years or so. Usually for the Christmas Party there are between 150 - 200 people but this year they had only sold 39 tickets. It was a pity as I have been doing Christmas Parties at a golf club in Henley in the lead up to Christmas and they have all gone really well. I think the difference is that the parties in Henley were all company christmas parties (probably paid for by the employer) but last night was paid out of peoples christmas
  14. I done a House party on Saturday night in Reading and I must admit I was very worried about it but it was a 40th wedding anniversary and they wanted mainly 60's music so I did not expect it to be a wild affair. Fortunately the evening went really well, lots of really nice comments, lots of people coming up for a chat and at the end of the evening the couple who had booked me came up and thanked me, saying that they only really booked me for a bit of background music and did not really expect the party to go as well as it did. I've done a few house parties in the past and never had an
  15. I'm always dancing away behind the decks and often get comments from other people saying that they see me having such a good time that they feel they have to dance too. Having a good time is infectious, just like laughing. I've been asked onto the dance floor many times through the years but it usually leads to some of my most embarrassing moments. I remember one very posh gig at one of the big hotels up by Heathrow, there was about 300 epeople there. the evening was going extremely well and one very nice but slightly drunk young lady came up and asked for Oops Upside your Head. I sa
