Okay, I have just picked a pair of mint condition Ohm RWS for a mere £140. So, I now have the opportunity to buy a set of RW3 or RW5 to go with them, both being £150 a pair. I have checked out various website but cannot find any difference in the specification of the two models apart from the fact that the RW3 are 300watt and the RW5 are 350watt.

Since the RWS are 300w, my questions are:-

1] Would I get any sound benefit from buying the RW5 over the RW3?

2] Since the RWS are rated at 300watts, should I stick with the RW3 as they are also 300 watts and would therefore match better?

3] and I know the old chestnut and I know that different people will have opposing views, but if I wanted to buy a new amp to go with them, what power output should I be looking for? I realise some of you will say higher than the speakers and some lower, but any recommendations or advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Aaron

ive got a pair of Ohm RWS's and RW3's, i run the lot off a 1200w amp, that does me nicely for majority of my gigs and covers a large audience.

By the way, where did you pick these up so cheap? They normally retail at around £500-600 per pair!

And another thing. Great choice in speakers, mine have never let me down, cracking sound too!!!

Have you lost your mind!

Ohm RW Series were the best "MIDDLE-RANGE" spear cabinets, they were by no means budget.

The have recently been replaced by the LX series, see here:

The RW5 is identical to a RW3 except it has a 1inch compression driver in the horn, not a Piezo; Oh and they are rated at 400w program not 300w rms.

I have to admit, at £500-£600 a pair, I would hardly call them budget speakers!

The OHM RW series were certainly a budget range....at least by OHMs standards who normally make high-end stuff to rival Nexo, Martin Audio, Turbosound etc.

There's nothing wrong with them at all, they're just cut-down when you're used to OHM's usual level of build. I recommend them!!

We use a lot of Nexo gear, from the PS stuff up through some of their old SI series and up to the Alpha/Alpha E.

The PS stuff is superb and really pushes the boundaries of what a small cab can do. We tend to use the PS15's and LS1200 subs mainly although the PS10 are phenomenal speakers too.

You have to use them with the dedicated TD controller to get the best from them, and use some serious amplification as they eat watts. The controller applies dynamic EQ depending on spl, so that the bass and tops always sound right. They use a sense line to monitor the change in impedance caused by power compression (heat) to regulate the amount of power that gets to the cab. That way you can really cane them and they will self regulate without resorting to compression/limiting which will affect the sound quality. We use a Crown Macrotech 5002 to power a pair of PS15's although Nexo recommend Camco which are also superb amps.

Only downside is the remortgage you'll need to buy them. I think list price on a single PS15 is about £1600 and the controller's regularly fetch £500 2nd hand on ebay. They do hold their value well and are a good 2nd hand buy if you can find them. The grilles and the fastning method sucks though, and breaks very easily. Don't let this put you off though as it doesn't necessarily indicate misuse or harsh treatment

Sorry, I still think any of you that class the Ohm speakers as budget must have more money than sense......! http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/363.gif

Martin Audio are mint speakers, but at 2 and a half grand each, the ohm's are the ultimate substitute! I cannot fault a single thing with my ohms, they take almost anything you throw at em! In most peoples books, £5-600 is alot of money for a pair of speakers, but they do become budget looking when compared to Martin audio and Nexo!

At £150, thats a bargain, go for it!

I run RW3's and RWS's and I have to agree they are great speakers.

I'm after a second set of RWS's. I have seen them sell on e-bay around the £150 mark but not for a while.

I have been running mine from my PV2600 which is 550watts a side at 8ohm's (which is what the Ohm's are)

It has given the speakers 50 watts of head room. I have just purchased a Ultra drive Pro to manage them hopefully better. First outing with the new set up will be Friday.

I will be running the RWS's with the PV2600 and the RW3's with my PV1500.

I'll let you know how I get on.
