For my sins I have another 18th tomorrow night, As I always state, these are not my ideal gig, but it is an old friends daughter. Although, I do not generally take this gigs on, I do keep up to date the music, so I hope I have 'most' of the requests. I got a little scared when I read the thread of new music since now 68 as I didn't have a couple of them.

Anyway, what are the must plays for my gig tomorrow night, as always your help is appreciated.

Lol Timbaland and Akon own the charts, they each have about 5 songs in the top 40 every week. If they ever collaborated the world would crumble.

Oh, and What Hurts The Most - Cascada

Yes.

I would ask for a few favourite tracks / artists to see which way the wind was blowing. The request sheet is always enclosed with the contract.

You want me to play what?

Steve

Thanks for your constructive comment.

Just to let you know that yes, I speak to all my clients 10 days prior to the event. If they are unable for a meeting at their choice of venue, I always make sure we have a good conversation on the phone.

On this occassion it is a surprise 18th, so I didn't feel I should actually make myself known to the party girl as it may spoil the surprise, you may think different. But instead I have spoken to her two of her best mates on the phone who have e-mailed me a playlists of the songs thay they like from 70/80/90's and 20's. The playlist looks fine and I have all the tracks that they have sent, apart from a couple which through the help ITUNES I have now got.

I was trying to cover all bases by asking fellow members of this forum to see if I had missed any obvious music for an 18th party.....

I thought that was the idea of the forum.

Robbie, just to add, yes the request list was with the contract, it was how I got in contact with her mates.

To all others.

Thank for the replies, your help as always is appreciated.

For those not into RnB, indie tracks would also go down very well - must plays:

Fratellis - Chelsea Dagger

Killers - mr Brightside

Feeder - Buck Rodgers

Orson - No Tomorrow

Jet - Are you gonna be my girl

Arctic Monkeys - Bet you look good

For the more heavily-into-indie fans:

Bloc Party - Banquet

Futureheads - Hounds of love

Pigeon Detectives - i found out

Hoosiers - Mr Ray

Happy, Steve are you sure? If this forum is not for asking questions like I asked, just let me know.

Anyway to anyone who was interested in how the gig went. It was a great night, that I wish could have gone on forver. The split between adults and teenages was probably 60/40 teens.. Out of the teens the spilt between male/female was probably 70/30 female.

When I go to the venue, some lads were setting up "The Pod Squad", which was very much the pod used in X-factor when the contestents go in slagging off Simon Cowell. I have seen this before at weddings, but only when you go in a room to give your comments to the bride and groom to a video camera. These lads did it out well and I can see a nice little market here, if only I had more time and another pair of hands.

Anyway, the best song of the night:

Basshunter - Now youre gone

Followed by a few by Cascade, Rhiana. Justin, Hoosiers etc etc went down great.

They loved the 80's, 70's....Went mad for Grease, Dirty Dancing etc etc.

Got loads of enquiries for more 18ths....been out today with family, just got home and had 6 messages for female 18ths all in the next 6 months....

Although I said in my orginal post that it was for my sins I was doing an 18th, I really enjoyed it and it was good seeing all the 'kids' enjoying themselves. I even managed to get all the adults up to dance to a few of the newer songs. We also had a oops upside your head competition between adults and a the teens, adults won hands down, they were well chuffed....,Ha ha...

Anyway, thanks for all your tips on the songs, I had all the requests they asked for apart from one and the guy who asked for it said, he wasn't sure who the artist was and what the song was, but he thought it was xxxx, which it obviously wasn't.

Anyway, next weekend, wedding and 50th party....I wish I was doing an 18th.

Cheers

Neil

glad you had a good night mate!

I wont do 18th's anymore all the ones I've done I hated.

its sounds like you had a good balanced mix of young & old punters which means you can play all kinds of Music as opposed to the 18th Birthday Party at the local Village Hall where all the peeps are 18 or under, the Parents disappear into the Kitchen area & all they want to hear is Hardcore Rave!!!

Sound like a great night, and it obviously helped that you took the time on here and with the friends to be well prepared. I love 18th Birthdays, they are amongst my favourite bookings. Young people really do get into the golden oldies far more than we expect, as long as you sprinkle in the contemporary stuff.

Th Pod thing is a brilliant idea. It's definitely something I'd like to incorporate into some of my bookings, just need to bring a helper on board.
