Danno13 0
QUOTE But if you left your machine, surely there must be a way to protect indiviual worksheets then ? Nope.. not within windows. You can write-protect your files in office but people can still see them... If i were to leave my machine unattended i would lock it (windows key + L) so that the password needed to be entered to use it. jackcu 0
You can password protect individual files in Word and Excel, but they are relatively easy to break. If you want them to be REALLY secure, I have a couple of suggestions - you could use PGPDisk which creates an encrypted virtual HDD. I've done this for years and it is very good. Another thing I've done recently is buy a little USB dongle called The Saint: http://www.thegadgetstore.com/TemplatePage...t/876/434/2.htm It's not a USB drive - it is a key that encrypts a virtual HDD. £20 and it keeps everything secure. Cheers, Jack.

The reason I ask is I have recently lost a usb memory stick somewhere...
jackcu 0
QUOTE (brianmole @ Jun 22 2005, 12:46 PM) Jack, what happens if you lose the dongle? Can you just plug another one in, or would you need to get one programmed specially? A very good question Brian. What you do is this - when you buy it, it comes with a unique code. You need to enter this code and your own passphrase the first time you use it. This is used to generate the keys that encrypt your data. If you lose it and have to buy a new one, it will have a different unique code and won't decrypt your data http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/sad.gif However, if you make a note of the original code and keep it somewhere secure (like in your PGPDisk encrypted drive) you can buy a new dongle, enter the code from the old one, and you have effectively "recreated" the lost key. In other words, the code is unique, but not to the key it comes with - any unique code that makes sense to it will work. So a hacker would need a new, unused key AND access to your original code AND passphrase for them to be able to access your data. This is fairly unlikely. I've bought a spare key in case I lose the main one in 10 year's time and they are no longer available. HTH Jack.

jeffwall 0
You can set up a screen saver with pass word protector and set up a small time limit for it to come on, so every time you go away from your machine you can leave it turned on and the screen saver will start, when you come back, you will have to enter the code to get back to your work OR you can just have your own adminuistrator account which will let you have your oe=wn folders present when you log in, your folders will not be shown when somebody else logs in...all this can be set up in my computer and user account settings Not an expert but on xp can be done http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/toot.gif Edited June 22, 2005 by Jeffwall

DJ_Ajay 0
Just remember when you encruypt files, with some programs, they can only be opened on that computer, under taht user account. So if your laptop was to crash you would lose everything, as you couldn't plug the HD into another computer and access the files. http://www.curlysbar.com.au/
