Got a great 70's movies scores CD, with Jaws on it, will edit out the intro to make a short blast of dum dum , dum dum, .......... AHHHHH! If so, NYE follows the usual path. In fact, it really is nothing more than a party night disco, ending a little later that the usual gig. Alot of hype but the same suspects are played. I tend to find that NYE is easy as everyone is UP for a party.. The startup though is always happy music... ie no depressing swing numbers, just foot tapping, possible singalong tracks that most will know that starts the atmosphere buildup early... First thing I will do is have a look around and get an idea of the age range. If the average age are quite young, I'll start off with some current chart stuff, older and I'll start off with 70's/80's older still, a bit of rat pack/big band. If there are lots of children I'll stick on high school musical to keep them busy while their parents have a chat and settle in but that may not be appropriate at all gigs. Once I've started and I get an idea of what gets them up and who is going to dance, then I'll play tracks to suit the crowd which I won't have an idea about until I get there. I think its a bit presumptuous to say "most disco that have a diverse age" because I often find thats not the case. People tend to invite friends of a similar age and I find often the average age is similar. They can like anything from any genre which could include sequence dancing, cockney, club style, current charts, 60's, 70's 80's or whatever. I wish I did do "one shape fits all" style disco's where a generic play list would work every time, it would make life so much easier but I usually have to rely on my 6th sense and crystal ball to play what best suits. They're your typical 25-50 year old crowd really, Bit of modern chart stuff, Disco, 70's rock, Party "cheese" we all know and love. Generally i try and let the crowd do most of the work for me by proposing they bring their requests up for me to play when appropriate! Most of us do go with some idea of what to play - well, what to try out at least. True - you don't know how the crowd is going to react until you've thrown them some bait...
