Friday night have a birthday gig, starts at 8pm, finishes at 6am, then straight onto a hotel to set up, and start at 10am, finishes at 1am next morning, an all day wedding, so 48 hours non stop again, I used to be able to do this, now I know I'm going to start feeling it on Sunday night at the pub quiz...

.....but what do I know ?

Last nights was a Christmas Do! http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/huh.gif

The company had tried and tried to book a Christmas do, since about October last year, and with one thing and another, they just hadnt got around to it.

So, last night it was....unbeknownst to them, until I told them, last night was 182 days since last Christmas, and 183 days until next - so they couldnt have got further away from a Christmas, if they'd tried.

Totally boring first 3 hours....gig started at 5:30 http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/huh.gif for HALF the people. The other half werent going to get there until 9:00pm... Those there seemed to be keen on testing my music collection with way off requests, and plenty of requests for tunes which they themselves asked for as "Cheesy"...literatlly thats what they were writing.

So....cheezy Chesney Hawks went on, Rick Astley (He's the same as Kylie - at 35% pitch shift...), The Reynolds Girls (I'd rather Jack - than Fleetwood mac)...etc, etc.

Things started getting going by about 9:30 after the other half of the group had turned up. Mainly 70's pop-rock, and that sorta style.

Oh, and "Ma na ma na" by the Muppets.

Not much dancing at all, but lots of toe-tapping, carpet dancing (eg: away from dance floor) and generally a good time.

I gave them an option of 1 of 7 of their remaining requests for their last record, the voting from the dancefloor chose "So here it is Merry Christmas" by Slade. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/wallbash.gif (in JUNE!?)

Tonight......? Well tonight is a wedding, and one slight gripe.

They couldnt be bother to get the music sheet back to me until yesterday....

So, I cant be bothered to go any buy any Metallica...(requested for the Brides Son http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/huh.gif ). (Probably the wrong attitude, and the whole evening will collapse due to my lack of foresight, and not having the entire "OUR PRICE" stock in my Record & CD cases.

I've probably got some Metallica in my collection on a compilation album somewhere, but not 100% sure. Besides the son also has requests for Linkin Park, which I know I have got a couple of tracks of.... besides, he's not likely to dance to his requests, just stand there looking at the empty dancefloor.

Thankfully, I've got the Bride & Grooms first record "lost in Space, by the Lighthouse family"...(Now 40)...

The 20 or so other tracks on their list are pretty standard stuff, which I know I've got.

I'm of the same frame of mind as you Gary. With the request list I was given for this 70's and 80's night, i have around 85% of it, but am reluctant to buy the other 15% for tracks which i've never been asked for in 16 years, and will probably never get asked for again. So they'll have to make do with the majority.

Friday night, covered a school gig for Kazz - split into two sessions, first one went alright and the second feel to pieces around my ears. Rule one, never try to copy another DJ's tried and test system.

Saturday, off to Seend, where, Seend, a village half way between Devizes and Trowbridge. Set up for 4.30pm, act as MC and Duty Manager!!! start disco at 9.50 and finish at 11.15. and no i won't tell you how much I got for this one, it would upset 99% of you. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/fear.gif http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/laugh.gif http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/laugh.gif

I offer a "Music Guarentee" this is where the client chooses 15 tracks, and I guarentee to play those tracks, as long as they give me at least 10 days

Had a fantastic wedding gig last night, people were up for it from word go,they had created lots of sketches and games and with a 6 hour gig i think 30 mins was the longest set i played without anything going on. Really nice people and the groom and best man carried my speakers out and put them in the trailer at the end of the night, as well as paying me 400 squid, free drinks and 2 meals! The playlist i received had 2 songs on it and they had written that they trusted my judgement for the rest of the music !!!!!! Am thinking about moving in with them! http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif Wish they were all like this.

Saturday was quite a good gig, the School Reunion for Cheadle High School Class of '79 http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/smile.gif . Typed in their request list into OTS at 7.30 and found that there was enough music on that alone to take us to 11.15! http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/fear.gif . Some of their requests were not really Danceable as such, so shuffled the list to play the non danceable stuff first (Eagles, Cat Stevens, 10cc etc) for use as background. Luckily everybody arrived at the same time http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/thumbup.gif .

The night got underway pretty much as expected, with the first few hours being used for the old friends to gossip and catch up with events, no interest in the disco until around 11.00. The event had been booked and advertised as a 70's night with a few 80's thrown in, however there is always one idiot who won't accept, that when a D.J is booked for a 70's night - he can't play Trance music! - Hmm there is always one!.

Apart from the one pillock, the night was a great success, the 70's stuff half filled the dancefloor, but it was the early - mid 80's stuff (Soft Cell, Wham, Yazoo, Human League) that really packed the dancefloor. Possibly since most of them were at University or college by this era, and you always remember your student days more than your School ones! http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/whistling.gif .

One of the best gigs that we have had for a while http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/smile.gif , and a great start for the new trainee.

Hi folks

Last night's 40th birthday bash was a pretty good one, and we were definitely due for it.

Had to drive down a mud track and over a field to get to the marquee, damn big thing too, about 75ft by 50 ft.

they also had a pig roast, bouncy castle and bucking bronco, shame I didn't get to have a go.

Gave out tons of glow sticks, taking all the previous points regarding another thread and health and safety stuff.

Once the dancefloor started getting occupied, it was pretty steady from about 9 pm till the end at 1 am.

We even had 4 girls doing a poll dancing contest and Darren J got out on the floor showing them how to time warp and got used as a human poll, lucky git.

Defintely needed the base bins for this one and it al sounded pretty good.

Update: The Metallica, Septula ( http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/huh.gif WHO?) and Linkin Park were all apparently tongue in cheek requests for the 6 year old son. Good thing I didn't cough up any dosh on Metallica Greatest hit(s) then....

This reception went well all the way thru...everything just slotted into place....

For example:

  • Everyone was out of the function room by 4pm, giving me 3.5 hours to set up...leisurely...so much better than the normal 45 minute panic setups.
  • A huge poster of the groom dressed as Elvis adorned the room...suggesting a light-hearted crowd out to enjoy themselves.
  • Several of the grooms friends were in matching "elvis" sunglasses - again suggesting a "good crowd"
  • There were about 15 kids - so plenty of opportunity for some "family DJ" practice with about 75 minutes of kids-disco music, prizes and games.
  • Several opportunitys during the buffet for some "ice-breaker" announcements EG: Richard singing along to Kate Bush "Wuthering heights", a couple of birthday announcements etc.
  • Several get party tunes were requested - Time Warp, YMCA, Rocking all over the world etc.
  • A stunning girl in her mid twenties danced to "Meatloaf: Bat out of hell" and several of the kids almost drowned in the drool from the male guests, staff and DJ !

More nights like that one please...

My weekend went very well

Fridays gig was the start of a new residency at A hogs Head, this one is just on the south side of Blackfriars Bridge about half a mile from the one that Eskie & I DJ at. Totally differant sort of crowd, mostly female Journalists from IPC magazines. Started at 6pm and for the 1st 90 mins played a variety of music to test the crowd, but from 7.30pm - 11pm it was solid cheese. The manager was over the moon.

Saturday was an 18th birthday, not many people there, but those that were danced all night.

Friday night did a charity horse race night at my hotel residency, they supply all the stuff and I just have to host it - Good crowd so quite a lot of dosh raised...

Saturday night was a wedding in the same place - When I spoke to the B&G before hand to confirm songs (Aerosmith 1st and then Endless Love?????!!!!!???? second!?) they said that they really like the Now Decades disc 1...

That was their playlist....

Started a bit slow, but once the buffet had finally gone down it went really well... The Bride said she liked eighties stuff, so managed to get mix Bros into the set with a bit of Rick Astley, Tiffany, Belinda Carlisle etc as well!! Oh I was so proud!! Had the usual one who complained about Bros saying no one would dance to it but the casual glace to the dancefloor showed she was very wrong as that it was packed!!

All in all an enjoyable night (and I still can't believe I played Bros - 1st time I ever have!)

Next week have a school reunion, class of 84 so time to research!!!

Friday’s 25th wedding anniversary was at the Princess Golf and leisure centre in Dartford.

This was a nice little venue with easy access (all be it up the fire escape) to the room, with a nice big balcony over looking greenery & Dartford. We were able to park the trailer right at the bottom of the fire escape & 45mins later we were all ready to go.

This went well with people dancing most of the night, it did go a bit quiet half hour before the end, but this was as last orders was called & everyone rushed to the bar. Received a lot of good comments at the end and handed out about 25 cards, & one guest ringing on Sunday to book a birthday party in December. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Saturday’s Pub disco in Maidstone turned out to be a 30th birthday party for about 40 people, 15 of these were children under 7 years old. All the parents wanted me to do was keep the children entertained while they sat down and got pickled. This was going to be a hard night, I haven’t done any small children’s parties & I didn’t expect this from a pub disco, so didn’t have that type of music with me.

For the first hour the kids just wanted to run around chasing the lights or going out into the garden on the climbing frame. After they had tired of this and had been fed I put Casper slide on, this got all the kids up and dancing along with a couple of parents. I managed to keep them going with the usual party cheese for about 45min before they got fed up with just music they wanted to play party games.

This something I have never done & the reason I won’t take bookings for kid’s parties, I need to find someone who is willing to take me out a couple of times with them, when they do some kids parties. (I know I was one once, but they frighten the life out of me) http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/scared.gif

I didn’t think this evening went too well but at the end a lot of people said it was a good night & they loved the music and were asking for cards for future adult bookings (so perhaps it wasn’t that bad after all)

Sunday’s was local scout hall booked from 2pm to 7pm by a neighbour for their daughters first Holy Communion (she said it was going to be a family do with all ages).

The hall was fairly large with no soft furnishings & it was like being in an echo chamber, sound was bouncing all around the room. By setting up at an angle we managed to reduce some of the echo, but it was still pretty bad. There were no blinds or curtains to block any of the bright sunshine coming through so the lights seamed a complete waste of time.

While they were setting up the tables we noticed they only set places for only 24 people, surly there wasn’t only going to be 24 people in a hall this large with all this echo! http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/oops.gif

Well it did get a little bit better, there were 30 people at most and that included 3 of us. This felt like a complete disaster during the 5 hours the kids were the only ones to dance, and they soon got fed up with that and started running around, in all this space a screaming at the tops of their voices (you know how much kids like a bit of echo.) Luckily with the aid of the Amp & speakers I can pump out a lot more volume than they ever could. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/laugh.gif

At 6:30 the organiser said we could start packing up, half hour early I thought this must have gone bad if they wanted me to pack up early. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/014.gif

As we were packing up three people came over saying how much they had enjoyed the afternoon, and apologised for giving us such a hard time & all three wanted cards to book dates in August, September & October. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/laugh.gif

3 disco’s in one weekend, with 1 confirmed booking & another 4 in the pipeline, not such a bad weekend after all. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/toot.gif

Hi all,

In the words of Spankox - To the club: Friday Night.... to the club.

So, Friday night, did a club in Kent to a much bigger audience than last week (well last week was 30, this week was 100) with PARTYCHRIS. But when you consider the capacity is over 1000, there is a long way to go.

Saturday, back to the mobile, back to the local wedding factory for another cheese special! All guests on the floor from 9pm to midnight. Also had Martin out with the other half of my gear doing a 40th nearby, and by all accounts that was also a great success.

One problem this weekend, my mic lead has died, had to use the spare mic. Must buy a new mic lead, and a spare!

Roll on Friday night...to the club!

Friday night - BBQ in the back garden. Just me & the missus, some steak, burgers & Guinness..... luvverly http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/rolleyes.gif

Saturday, 50th anniversary. Nice gig... small function room over a pub. Had coloured pars around the ceiling wired to a couple of bulgin cables just waiting for my S2L controller. And a pair of linked Datamoons either side of the dancefloor. Now I`m more determined than ever to get some of those http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif

The "do" was a good`n. About 80 - 90 guests from such diverse places as Cornwall, Edinburgh and............ Florida !

The happy couple were ex-licensees so a lot of the guests were in the pub/hotel trade and I was asked for, and gave out, loads of cards... hoping for some work off this one ;).

Most of the music was really laid back 40s and 50s, like Sinatra, Tony Bennett etc, moving on to 60s pop around 10:30pm and moving it on to some more modern cheese before my usual finale of Grease Mega / New York New York.

A really nice night (and the buffet was delishhhh)

Sunday - nowt - family business.
