Following on from the Dire Straights thread, it got me thinking about UB 40. In the 80's I use to play 4 or 5 tracks of theirs per night, but now maybe Red Red Wine or Kingston Town.

They did some classic tracks, interesting to know whether others find them popular.

I try not to. Their best stuff is off their first 3 albums*, it all went down hill when they became a covers band.

* Hardly anyone would remember it & not very danceable anyway.

now your talking. My favoutrite band seen them many times live. Food for thought, here i am, cherry oh baby, oh so many but I hardly play them at all, Played Kingston town and got a complaint the last time. In Scotland they love red red wine and sing Buckfast Wine instead ( If you didn't know thats the local wino's drink). I sing a load of there stuff on karaoke mainly because I'm quite good at their type of stuff.

Just to clarify, I do actually like UB40 & went to see them most tours until Labour of love came out, but I just can't understand why they insist on releasing all those lame covers, when their own stuff is far superior.

I've got nothing against covers either, many bands do fine (if not better) jobs on other peoples material. UB40 just sound like a castrated version of their former selves when they do it.

:poo: cover version (IMHO) the Lord Creator original is far superior.

Exactly! & it sold so well that they decided that covers would (with few exceptions) be their chosen career path. All down hill from there on in.

you need to listen to their last two albums as they are full of political type stuff and do not have cover versions.

Too late they've burned their bridges. This might explain why they haven't had a hit in a while.

pity its too late but having hits doesn't mean your a good group ( Spice Girls). Their concerts are a sell out weeks in advance, so as a live band they are one of the best.

How does that equate, just because all the sheep want to go & see a glorified covers band doesn't make them a good one. To use your example I bet the Spice Girls tour sold out pretty quickly too

I would never do that in one night but your call of course.

Can't ever remember them ever being requested but I am pretty sure I have played Red Red Wine before.

Not a bad group.

Not a bad group.

You have to remember that 20 years ago more group dominted that charts than what they do now. You can't really compare what happens now to what happened back then.

eg UB 40 went through a stage of mass appeal particularly around the 1983-1987 stage. Certainly when I was a club DJ I used to play several of their tracks per night. I woudn't do that now unless I was asked!

FGTH also had 3 or 4 trac ks on the go in 1984, and you were expected to play these.

Even now it's not unusual to play 3 or 4 tracks by the same artiste if it's going down well with the audience eg the other week i played 4 tracks by Status Quo. The crowd loved it.

I would only play some if I was asked, most of the time I'd play Red Red Wine, or if it was later near the end of the night then I'd go for Kingston Town.

I was asked for and played Honely Girl the other week and that went down a storm

Got to admit that I'm not a huge fan but thats because of my younger brother playing them 24/7 when we used to share a bedroom growing up.

Notice with the exception of Norfolk DJ & CS for a grand total of 4 tracks, everyone has suggested cover versions. Proves my point.

Might be that CS and Norfolk DJ are some of the slightly older DJ's on here and can remember UB40's influence on the UK music scene in the 1980's which should not be forgotten. Groups peak and they did so in the mid 1980's.

True they did some cover versions and I agree a few were ordinary.
