I've catered for karaoke too, and some of the best presentations I've seen of others over the years didn't have plasma screens?! It's not just about the equipment you know! And I expect the client may well have indicated already in that area if it was an essential proviso!

Presentation is everything, sure, but don't automatically assume that big plasma screens are going to make it clever! You may not have the room to set them up for starters! smile icon

Exuberate confidence without over-showering them with charisma, your larynx and your teeth, and I'll bet you'll be half way there!

But if you do have to hire in, I'm sure there are DJs with Plasma's sitting around who would be more than glad to assist.

Some AV hire company's can easily charge £130 a day for 1x plasma screen and stand.

Just my 2p worth!

Now here is my 2p worth

I recently worked with a company at The Kensington Roof Gardens who supplied and oprarated the Karaoke.

They used 2 50" screens facing (Set up high on Dressing) the audience with one VC camera on the singer. The guy operating the Karaoke was well presented (Tux), but was also a trained singer to get the Guests into the mood.

The requests were handled by a lady in a lovely cocktail dress and all the requests were written by her and confirmed that the person requesting the song(s) were the singer(s)

The evening run without a fault in a professional manor

The Karaoke was the best I had ever seen on presentation and look.

Hi. I can't comment on the screens but I know Ian from Elite Entertainments pretty well and he has the best Karaoke set-up I've seen. Top of the range Karaoke gear and the biggest, most up-to-date collection of original discs, too.

Check out his site for more info. He's based in the middle of Cheshire and Peterboro, in Stoke/Newcastle.

Not nit picking, but in the context of the question, when I read to the the bit about the 'trained singer', it cracked me up! :D

You had to see it the guy was a classical singer by trade and was hired to run these events by the management company smile icon

I agree 100% with Kingy. Personally i think that hiring in a professional singer is going to put off any ordinary member of Joe public. I mean, who wants to follow somebody like that?. You may as well just hire in a professional cabaret singer or band for the night and forego the Karaoke.

I suppose its a bit like one of us entering a DJ mixing competition and finding out that we were competing against the calibre of Carl Cox and Pete Tong

To be honest the guy didnt seem to put off anyone the set was an 1 1/2 hours long and the guy only sang 2 songs. one at the beginning and the last song then handed over to me and the show band.

As for entering the a mixing compitition you may well come accross Carl Cox but if he is having a bad day anyone could win! I saw this happen at a local club where EZ had a real hard time ad was not his usual hyped up self.

oh dear here we go...

Karaoke has got a tacky image.. fact

This is down to these factors

People often need to be tipsy before they will have a go... seeing drunks slurring and missing words, starting at the wrong point and out of tune is not an amusing sight for sober up tight types.

people who are tipsy are often much worse at singing than if they were sober

The ones who dont need a drink generally fall into two categories people who dont give a flying fig and often have big "tacky, chav ,oh im zanny! personalities" and ones who can sing

lots of people secretly love it but will never admit it.

lots of people love watching people make fools of themselves but wont admit it.

I think DJ equipment has very little to do with if the karaoke is tacky or not and more to do with the singers and the way the host operates.

I did a xmas party in a hotel and i was told by the management its disco no karaoke as this is a upmarket party..no problem.

I set up and i have a 50's style shure mic on a stand that i talk in to if needed and a standard mic as backup if needed , as the party started i moved the 50's mic to the side of my goal post stand as i got a bottle of water from my bag. immediately the head of the party saw the mic and said wow a real mic and posed with it as people took pictures then they all took turns doing this.

he came to me and said oh i wish it was karaoke all the party group were up for it. i can guarantee you when they were all sober and if karaoke was mentioned when organising the party it would have been a stern no we dont want it.

Karaoke will always be looked down on unfairly imho and tacky is just one of the nicer ways its described!

to make my karaoke a bit more upmarket once, i put 4 par cans on a tripod, angled onto the singers. I also introduced and presented far more formally.....rather than my ditzy blonde routine..... and i sang too ( a sensible one rather than the send ups that i usually do)

Sandy

Blonde dizzy and no longer available

I saw a "Celebrity" DJ come to a club with a ready mixed CD who then stood there and pretended to mix!!!! I kid you not!!

Tiesto does that every night.

As a devotee of karaoke if I walked into a venue and saw a bloke in a tux and a girl in a cocktail dress runing the show, I'd be out the door.

I'm a DJ based in Northern Ireland with nearly 10 years' experience offering a range of services. Including club residencies, karaoke, pub quizzes, specialised wedding service, Master of Ceremonies, Compere, Night at the Races and much more.

what we are actually thinking of is a stars in their eyes scenario.

dedicated stage with 3 starcloths on trusses forming a 3 sided area. spots on top , smoke machines.

2 outward facing monitors and a hidden monitor for the artistes to use.

camera to show the singer/audience on the big monitors.

grand entrance from behind the stage into a cloud of smoke.

par cans lighting the stage.

in fact we intend to recreate a t.v. stage atmoshpere as well as we can.

cant call it stars in their eyes of course but you get the drift.

we are in the planning stages now and working out what gear we will need to purchase and the best way of setting up etc.

web site template is in place and waiting to be built.

marketing strategy to be worked on and literature etc.

hope to be able to offer a show by about april may '09.

aiming at the bigger events obviously, wont fit in ur average pub.

we want to create the atmosphere of the singer being the star as best we can.

we are toying with lots of other embellishments too but they are all ideas at the moment.

i live about 500 yards from am entertainments, in fact we are going out today for an early set up for tonight and a bit of rest and food before nye gig.

To be fair, before anyone else in their opinion says such and such does this, or that, is there any proof to back such claims up?
