At a gig on Satuday I played James Brown - Sex Machine (about 5 mins long) and later on Guns N Roses - Sweet child o'mine ( over 6 mins long)

Both went down well but they are long songs and I was actually going to fade out guns and roses half way through but I didn't as it was going down well.

I've had people before get bored of sex machine after about 3 mins because it is fairly samey through the song and Sweet child o'mine would have been better as a 3.5 min radio edit :-)

Just wondered what other people do with long (5min+) songs?

I played SCOM on Saturday, but wanted fit the other "usual" songs in (Summer 69/Livin on a prayer/Lay your Hands on), and also wanted to end on time.

I think I faded it about 2 mins short - I can't remember exactly where.

Alternatively, pitch it up 10% to save 30 seconds...lol. :pro:

Its sometimes a hard call - and unless you know the song well, it could sounds pretty naff if you fade at the wrong time.

If the song is a request, and long, AND it fits, I'll just let it play.

I also played the long version of Sweet Child of Mine the other week... Not long after playing the full version of Bohemian Rhapsody!

Cheers,

To be honest I find most crowds go nuts for the intro of Sweet Child Of Mine but then lose interest about 30 seconds into the track. If a long track has a fairly length guitar solo/instrumental break about 3/4 of the way through it can be a handy escape, but sometimes your stuck and you just have to live with it. I played Paradise By The Dashboard Light on Saturday night form start to finish and the crowd went mad for it. I doubt they'd still be as happy if I played it too regularly though.

Go with the flow.

Sometimes you want the whole track, sometimes not. It entirely depends on audience reaction.

I have 12" versions of several tracks but only play what I feel will work on the night.

You want me to play what?

My thoughts exactly.

Take Bat out of Hell as another example, sometimes it goes down a storm and the crowd will be raising the roof all the way through, other times they get bored after the second verse.

I see how the audience react. If they show signs of boredom then I get my mix on and i'm into the next track.

I had a guy pester me months back for a p-diddy 20 minute track i didnt have so i went home found what he was on about on youbook or facetube so when he asked the following week... err sorry mate apart from all the swearing in it ..ohh and its a Sunday afternoon and theres kids in and i have 5 singers waiting to to sing Elvis, i'm not playing it because its rubbish.

I will play anything within reason but this was not a reasonable request for the venue.

I often get asked by singers for long versions and for songs that seem to go on forever and i have to admit to wanting to fade them when sang badly out on occasion but you can't lol

as for playing music i just gauge the crowd if they are loving it why stop ?if not mix it to another track

You need to read your audience if they start to loose interest cut the song short.

I recently played The Crown - Gary Byrd & the GB Experience (10.35) followed by Tainted Love 12" (8.58)

and had a full dance floor.

OMG I haven't heard this tune in *years* I even remember hearing this as a child (I would have been about 8-9 at the time it was out)...

I found an edit on Spotify (4m36) on "A Complete Introduction To Tamla Motown" if you're interested:-
