I ahve been talking to a colleague about drinking while working.

What are your views?

I have two rules,

1) If I drive, I have No alcoholic drinks. Period.

2) If my roady is driving I have a couple of beers. Not enough to be in any way considered drunk, maybe four pints spread over the night.

For me:-

When Working / Driving - 1 Pint of Lager Shandy. Even when i'm not driving but still working I never have anything more. Some D.J's I know drink purely to give them confidence or mask nervousness but for me, the before 'gig' anticipation and the following natural high from a good gig is all part of the enjoyment.

Hi

Only ever drink at a gig when we've finished and if the host/staff buys me one http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/smile.gif

Besides the obvious point about alcohol and working, you can lose a lot of body fluids working all night, especially if you're under hot lights, alcohol only serves to further dehydrate you. Best thing to drink is water.

oooo andy... guiness....... I heard that it was a drink for after the guests had gone... cos most guiness drinkers could blow the guests on or off the dance floor at will! http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/071.gif

When I'm Master of Ceremonies as well as DJ (maybe one wedding in 4) I have a glass of wine for the toasts, otherwise usually just lemonade or O.J.

We only drink soft drinks when working, have on the odd occaision taken a shandy off the landlord/client so as not to appear rude, some people get really offended if you wont let them buy you a drink. (By that I mean a real drink not J20)

I'll usually have 2 pints of ordinary strength lager during a disco, if I've got a on-premises room for the night. Also during the show, I'll normally get 2 or 3 coke colas.

After the disco, theres the potential for several more if Ive been "talked into" providing music for a quiet staff party...but again only if Im not driving that night/morning.

http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/221.gif Seems I am the exception here.

I usually pay a driver, so I tend to have 5 or 6 pints during the average night, usually early on more than later.

It has never caused me a problem.

I can see this point of view certainly, however I would rather offend people than lose my licence / livelihood.

I realise that sounds dramatic, but where do you draw the line. Okay so 1 beer probably won't take you over the limit, but how about if you were working for the 'generous' family?, Father of the bride buys you a beer, then so does Father of the Groom, Then the best man feels obliged, etc etc. Since you'd had a beer bought by the 1st person then you feel obligated to accept another, then another......

If you are likely to encounter this then do the sensible thing like Kingy and Dale and get somebody else to drive.

For me it's one Shandy, then on the soft drinks, i've never had a client question my motives for the choice of drink but if ever the client didn't like it, then tough. At least i'll still have a licence tomorrow!. For many of us our our driving licence is our living, and our insurance premiums are already high enough without a Drink Driving charge to boot.

People arent really offended anyway... its just a cliche! "Oh come on, Ill be offended if you dont let me buy you a drink"!...... 2 options, either ask for a soft drink... or say you dont drink, can you have the money instead! http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/071.gif

Normally 2 pints of lager througout the evening........I nearly always drive so never more than this. I never, however, drink in front of guests whatever I happend to have in the glass, lager, pepsi, water, etc. People on the dancefloor dont want to see you drinking, afer all you dont want to encourage them to leave and go back to the bar!

Well, it seems this topic is back, probably due to the recent roadie post.

I always take my water whatever but will only ever drink coke if asked what I would like. Exception being the toasts at weddings etc and lets face it, thats not going to do much to you! Ie/ family wedding this Saturday just gone, I had a glass of Champagne.

I really feel that you have to be on top form at gigs, focused and not even a little tipsy (not saying anyon here is/has been) - would you drink in the office at work? (well, ADS would).

Not worth the risk having any booze at a gig barr the odd toast here and there.

never drink anything besides water or orange juice while working

mainly due to the fact that getting caught drink driving for me would have a major effect due to my normal job.

plus the fact that i cant function anywhere near as well even after a pint means i stay well clear and save it for my nights out
