Weekend Gigs May 16th - 18th

Recommended Posts

Well, I've got a date tonight at Norwich City Football Club for 150+ 15/16 years old till 1am.

I hope it's not 6 hours of Limp Biskit, Slipknot etc.... http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/fear.gif

Will let you know later how it went

Hmm,

Last night (Friday) was a combined 30th and 60th Birthday, with more guests in the 60+ bracket than the 30!. The old guy sat there looking miserable all night, and despite covering every era I doubt that there was anymore than 25 people on the dancefloor at any one time.

I also took Karen's advice, and played a few songs for the kiddies early on, and that did work well!, so at least the kids / parents had a good time http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/thumbup.gif

Highlight of the night was getting about 10 requests for a Waltz, then playing it and no bugger who'd asked for it even attempting to stumble onto the dancefloor. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/mad.gif , I really don't know why the D'arby and Joan set bother to book Disco's. an hour down the British Legion Club playing Dominoes / Bingo is a night out for them!, so I wish i'd took that 18th instead, at least they breathe!.

Then the (Miserable) old dinosaur comes up at the end and asks me to play on for 15 mins!, by this time there were about 6 people in the building!. Yeah Right!.

At least I got a booking for a 13th Birthday out of it, thanks to Karens advice - maybe we should al stick to kids parties and schools - at least you get a full dancefloor.

Then to cap it all, I returned home to find that the Cat had died http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/014.gif . Hopefully tonight's set at the local club will balance things out - I'll let you know!. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/tongue.gif

Had a late booking from a hotel on Friday night a dinner dance for Barnet Saraces Elizabethens Rugby Club. They sat down an hour late, presentations and then a guest speaker (Mike Lewis anyone heard of him?) I finally started playing at 10.45pm and the hotel is only licensed for music & dancing till 12..... easy night.

Saturday - off round the M25 to Essex to provide the entertainment for a wedding 200+ guests in the New Hotel (just of the A127) loads of 80's cheese, they went made at frankie - sister sledge (the brides fav).

So a good weekend had by all - next weekend a wedding in Poole, Dorset.

Speak to you all soon http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/042.gif

An almost perfect week;

Tuesday & Thursday @ The Marriot Hanbury Manor Hotel & Golf club in Ware, Herts; both corporate events, which mostly involved 5 course meals, speeches, presentations etc, which both didn't finish till around 10.30/45 and then I had to 'work' until midnght http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/tongue.gif

The usual friday residency was busy with a good crowd but saturday was superb. I'd booked a venue for May 17 for a old school soul night and advertised/promoted the event over the past 3 months together with a mate.

We were taking a slight chance as the venue was known in previous guises as being a bit dodgy. But it holds 400 people and is licensed until 3am so it was worth the risk.

Ticket sales were luke warm before the event, yet we were receiving very positive responses & enquiries from many people. My main wish was that there would be a good atmosphere to build on as we've now booked this venue for these soul nights every 3 months till the end of the year, and I could stand losing a little money in order to make money further down the line.

I couldn't have hoped for a better start as we had over 200 people and there was a fantastic atmosphere and a full dancefloor the whole night, but best of all absolutely loads of people praising the music I'd played and constantly asking when the next event was as they wanted to let their friends know not to miss the next one http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif (we'd already had fliers printed with details of the next event, which we gleefully handed out http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/tongue.gif )

As if I wasn't buzzing enough, both the venue manager & owner came up to me at different times at the end saying how much they'd personally enjoyed the night and that it was the best atmosphere they'd had at the venue for years, and urging us to do it more often than once every 3 months http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/071.gif

I was in Ipswich sharing the night with a Salsa dj.We did 15 mins each all thro the party and it worked quite well.Good crowd, good buffet, good night.

The only down side is that when you sit down when you get home and ahave a cup of coffee it suddenly dawns on you that you left the house at 3.30pm and you get back in at 3.00am!! You've just done a 12hour day!!!

This is not a rehearsal

This is it - grab it while you can.

Hi Mikeee http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/042.gif

Although we all do different gigs and have different styles its is so reassuring to know that we all suffer at gigs in the same way from time to time.

I wuld say 80% of my work is weddings and yes they can be hard work to get going.

Sundays are very often difficult nights for gigs

Work next day so guests never seem to want to let go.

Less alcohol intake due to work next day etc.

Thats the time to get head down and run through the sets you know work until you can get some of them putting in requests http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/laugh.gif

Firstly, sorry to hear about the Cat, I've 4 at the moment but had them for ages so I know what it's like to lose one.

Secondly, Mikee, we all have them, sometimes it is just a night to think of the money !!

Thirdly, my gig on Saturday night was a real pleasure. The kids were well behaved, all the lads in Dinner Jackets , a bit like a very young Mikee, and the gilrs in long evening dresses. I played loads and loads of chart stuff and the R Kelly track absolutely filled the floor but also there were more than a few request for older stuff. I had the usual couple of lads who wanted Limp B and Linkin P etc.. played one track that emptied the floor, so luckily for me a great excuse not to play it again. Another couple of lads wanted some DnB and Garage, yet again when put on, it cleared the floor. Somehow I've found recently that these are a boys thing and that the girls are just happy with chart and dance stuff.

Really poignant moment in the evening when I was asked to play Baker Street by Gerry Rafferty, yes you're reading it correctly, in memory of one of their mates who had died earlier this year. Everyone got up and danced with someone and at the end of the track they applauded me ! I was quite choked.

Thanks guys, but I've always prided myself with being able to "crack" any audience, and after Saturday's lets hold the bar up crowd, which I thought was hard work, then I get Sunday, the only consolation, they were not even really talking to each other let alone taking any notice of me. But going through the paper work today, it all became clear, it was a Yellow Pages booking.
