What Songs Do You Use?

Recommended Posts

After chatting to Ed the other day got on the subject of what music we play when running a sound check so I thought I'd ask it here!!!

So providing the rooms empty what music do you prefer to play to check everythings set-up properly.

Myself I find I'm using

Dido - Here with me

Fleetwood Mac - Everywhere

Used to use the Fugees version of 'Killing me Softly' when using the 15" or 18" but it sounds different (to me) when played on the Bose.

I now tend to use anything with a good modern quality recording, such as the Scissors 'I don't feel like dancing'.

12" cd Wav rip of Al no corida - Quincy Jones, This is a fantastic quality recording to give a good ballance between HF and LF...

I also use a country track, George Strait - The Chair, This has a loverly warm sound with a nice tight bass and just sounds good... I hate dance tunes or anything with to much going on in them... I find a lot of modern recordings are of a low quality even at CD level...

You need to use a track you are familiar with as a reference point and one where you can stand out front and identify all the components of the track, then use the EQ to ballance it correctly... Its not about how much bass you can kick out its about how pleaseing you can make it sound for your audience.

A. A nice tight thump in the bass and a nice clear vocal.

B. Its the first cd in my case...

For me it's Gat Decor - Passion (96 Remix), cracking bass and piano, and then if it's a wedding I give the first dance a play through to make sure it sounds alright too

"sandy nelson--let there be drums"

Have you noticed the very deep bass content in that track - about 3/4 of the way through? Quite impressive for the age.

I tend to use Alex Party - Don't Give Me Your Life, simply because it's at the front of one of the 90s cases. Plus, it's not recorded too badly, and I like it.

Michael Jackson - Billie Jean or Queen - Another bites the dust. These two are the ones I use in a hall or a large venue, but some where small havent really got 1 that stands out

I have a demo synth piece called the Nexus Realm (written by a musician who creates synth sounds for a living, as well as produce electronic music).

Chicane - Offshore has an amazing bassline in it for testing the bottom end too..

Shame the speakers I've got aren't that great unfortunately. I need to get some better ones methinks...
